According to Rutanya Alda, director Michael Cimino obsessed over the scene where her character Angela and Steven (John Savage) drink from the cup during their wedding ceremony. According to orthodox Russian Christian tradition, spilling wine during this moment is a bad omen, so Cimino was determined to capture this foreshadowing moment on camera. He had asked the special effects department to create a cup that would cause a drop to visibly fall on Alda's dress, but when it came to shoot the scene, it didn't work properly. Cimino was reportedly furious, and wasted almost an entire day of shooting to get the effect, to no avail. In the end, Cimino himself was standing on a ladder just out of frame, and dropped a bit of wine on Alda's dress from above.

Axel: Fuckin' A.
Michael: Not bad.
In the bar, right before the guys start singing along to "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", Michael is sitting on a chair holding a pool cue in his right hand and tapping it on the floor. A split second later as they begin to sing, he pounds the cue stick on the floor with his left hand.
