- TriviaJohn Belushi's performance in the cafeteria scene was entirely improvised. When he began piling food on his tray, director John Landis urged the camera operator to "stay with him." The infamous "I'm a zit" gag was also improvised, and the reaction from the cast is completely genuine.
- GoofsAt the ROTC inspection, Neidermeyer salutes Chip Diller and Diller returns the salute. Since Chip Diller is the lower ranking officer, he should have saluted Neidermeyer, and Neidermeyer should have returned the salute.
- Crazy creditsFour of the listings in the cast are "mean dude," "meaner dude," "meanest dude," and "gigantic dude."
- Alternate versionsThe Australian R4 'The Full Story' DVD release features the version with the alternate 80's background music.

Ruined by basic cable
There is a generation gap at play here. Part of the problem is the puritanical zealousness anyone under 40 goes about imposing their poliitcal beliefs in the name of thoughtless wokeism. Their wanting oppressive censorship of all things made before 1993 is obvious. This movie is not for that crowd anymore so than if it were shown at a Christian Science reading room. The other problem is anyone not around in those days only ever got to see this movie on basic cable as I did. They watered it down and made it about as entertaining as watching 1941 with all that's been taken out. That is leading to a polarization. Either people who were around when this was new and relate to it better, acknowledge this as a comic masterpiece or people not around then consider this the most overrated comedy of all time. Either way It is a product of its time.
The 1970s were the period when comedy was the most free form of expression. Gone were the days of Lenny Bruce being hounded to his death and unemployable everywhere in the country except the bay area. Bruce would be cancelled today if only for that LBJ joke he did toward the end of his life. His sacrifice led to all restrictions on humor being lifted. Suddenly F#$% was showing up in movies, Animal House was the peak and written by those who made the most of this new era of comedy, National Lampoon.
Like all things that peak, they only go downhill later. Now this movie is fairly weak for modern audiences via censorship for network broadcasts. Its like Blazing Saddles needing content warnings for people who are too stupid to know comedies aren't invented to offend but to get a laugh, and if you dont like it, its on you, not the movie. Not much has changed from the 1920s to 2020s in that sense. One day when free forms of expression are celebrated again from all sources, regardless of who or what they choose to mock, this modern day fascism will inevitably end. Let the unedited for tv version of this movie be a reminder for what comedy is supposed to look like going forward.
