- A man's simple lie to secure his job escalates into more complex lies when his orthodox boss gets suspicious.
- Ramprasad is a recent college graduate who finds a job with a finicky man, Bhavani Shankar, who believes that a man without a mustache is a man without a character. Bhavani Shankar is also against any of his employees indulging in recreation of any kind. When Ramprasad's boss catches him at a hockey match, he invents a twin brother, the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad, to save his job. When Bhavani's daughter falls in love with the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad and insists on marrying him, and Bhavani insists she should marry Ramprasad, things take a wacky turn. A fake mother and a hilarious chase are other enjoyable features involved in this comedy.—Vijay
- Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar), a young chartered accountant, and his sister Ratna are orphans living in Bombay. One morning, an old family friend, Dr. Kedar, visits him with information about a very well-paid job being advertised by Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), the owner of Urmila Trading Corporation, who happens to be Dr. Kedar's personal friend. Bhavani approves of Ram Prasad Dashrath Prasad Sharma's moustache, oily hair and (short) kurta-pajama, and hires him. Bhavani Shankar is a bit nutty and feels young people should have no interests other than work, so when Ram Prasad wants to watch a hockey test, Ram Prasad tells him that his mother is sick to get leave. Of course, Bhavani goes to the same hockey test and spots Ram Prasad. When confronted at work, Ram Prasad tells him that he has a twin, who is good-for-nothing, who wears loud clothes and is clean-shaven and westernized. Turns out the twin knows music, so to rehabilitate him, Bhavani offers him a job teaching music to his daughter. Complications follow.—Rohit Grover
- Unemployed Ramprasad Sharma is told by Doctor Mama that if he alters his manner of speaking, and wearing clothes, he could land himself a job. Ramprasad does so, and gets employed in a firm run by traditional and orthodox Bhavani Shankar. Problems crop up for Ramprasad when Bhavani finds out that he is leaving a double life, so Ramprasad creates a fictional brother named Laxman. The problem does not get resolved, as Bhavani's daughter falls in love with Laxman, and Bhavani wants her to marry Ramprasad. In order to finalize this marriage, Bhavani goes to visit Ramprasad's residence, and meets his mother and sister, and that's when the fun begins for Ramprasad lives with his sister only, leaving the hapless and confused Bhavani, to even more haplessness and confusion.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- Ramprasad (Amol Palekar) is a recent college graduate who finds a job with a finicky man, Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), who believes that a man without a mustache is a man without a character. Ram is coached by his uncle Dr Kedar Mama (David Abraham), who is a good friend of Bhavani. Mama is an old friend of Bhavani and had introduced Ram to the opportunity of a job in the first place. Mama coaches Ram on Bhavani's philosophy on life & tells precise answers to Bhavani's interview questions. Bhavani doesn't like experienced people and likes the energy of youth. He doesn't like shortened names and likes to hear the full name of people. Also, Bhavani likes men with well groomed and oiled hair. He also hates recommendations.
Mama asks Ram to dress up in Kurta Pajama for the interview with Bhavani. Ram didn't have any such clothes and went to this theatre actor friend Deven Verma to borrow a costume for a day. There is only one pair that fits him but is slightly short in length. Deven also tells Ram how he is playing a double in his play. 2 brothers, one with a mustache and one without.
Ramprasad is brilliant but has to fib about many of these things to impress Bhavani & to get the job. He spins a yarn about his idealist dad who had taught him everything but has now passed away. At the interview Bhavani questions Ram about the short length of his Kurta and Ram says that his father taught him to avoid excesses. He says that if every man shortens their Kurta by a few inches, the entire population of the country can be adequately clothed. Ram also says that he has never watched football in his life and refuses to answer any questions except on the topic of accountancy. He says that his father told him to only focus on his studies during his formative days. Bhavani is mighty impressed and hires Ram on the spot for Rs 850/month salary, which is much above what Ram could expect to earn elsewhere.
Bhavani Shankar is also against any of his employees indulging in recreation of any kind. Bade Babu (Yunus Parvez) is the senior officer in Bhavani's office. Ram lives in a house with sister Ratna (Manju Singh). Bhavani lives with his daughter Urmila and his widowed sister Kalindi (Shobha Khote). Bhavani is impressed when Ram saves the company Rs 15,000 in interest costs, and increases his salary by Rs 100/month.
When Ramprasad is caught by his boss at a soccer match, he has to invent a twin brother, the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad, to save his job. He got this idea remembering Deven's words about how he was playing a double role of twin brothers. Ram also says that he has a sick mother at home. Bhavani wants to help Ram financially & asks him to send Laxman or "Lucky" to his home to teach music to his daughter Urmila (Bindiya Goswami). Ram is desperate to hold on to his job as nobody pays Rs 950/month those days, so he begs Deven for a fake mustache, and readies to play a double role in his real life.
Urmila is already in love with Lucky, having heard him sing a song at an academy before, but not knowing his name. Bhavani too is impressed with Lucky's singing. This fails Ram's plan as he wanted Bhavani to fire Lucky for his bad behavior. Bhavani pays Ram Rs 200/month for Laxman's services.
Now Bhavani wants to come home to meet Ram's mother, so Ram approaches his actor friend Deven Verma to hire a mother. Deven introduces Ram to Kamala Srivastava (Dina Pathak), who agrees to play the role after some persuasion. Bhavani meets Kamala at Ram's home, then sees her in a socialite party where even she says that they are twin sisters, & then rushes to Ram's home as Bhavani is headed there to check on Ram's mother. Kamala has to enter the house through the kitchen room window as Bhavani was already in the living room waiting for Kamala. She changes her clothes, and emerges from the bathroom to meet Bhavani. Bhavani amazingly buys all that.
Now Bhavani finds that Urmila has fallen in love with Lucky. To turn her towards Ram, he asks Ram to tutor her in studies at night. Urmila hates Ram with every fiber of her being. She starts meeting Lucky in private after finishes her tuition with Ram. This increases Ram's logistical issues even further.
One day Bhavani sees Urmila with Lucky & goes straight to Ram's mother to ask for Ram's hand in marriage. Now Urmila runs away from home & threatens suicide to Lucky if he doesn't marry her. Bhavani thinks Lucky has helped Urmila run away & threatens to inform police. Ram finally decides to reveal the truth to Urmila & she agrees to return home. At home, Ram's false mustache gives away & Bhavani thinks Lucky has killed Ram & is impersonating him to marry Urmila.
Ram & Urmila run away in a car & Bhavani gets arrested by police while chasing. Urmila & Ram get married & Kedar tells the truth to Bhavani. Bhavani forgives Ram & cleans up his mustache.
