- A scene of Adam and Alex taking a recreational blues pill was cut from the original UK cinema version in order for the film to receive an 'A' (PG) certificate. The scene was restored for the later 15-rated video version.
- An optical blow-up from 35mm was used to create a 70mm release version with a six channel soundtrack.
- A 96 minute TV version was shown in 1984 and 1985 on the NBC network. This version contains extended scenes, different dialogue and entire sequences omitted from the theatrical cut. To date it has not been released on any home video format.
- One scene which is missing from both the theatrical cut and the TV extended version was intended as part of the 'Blue Dreamer' hallucination sequence: Adam fantasizes that he murders 'Captain James'. Stills from this sequence were used in publicity at the time of the film's release.
