Aside from his trademark Detroit Tigers cap, Magnum also wore a US Navy ball cap. The name and logo were those of VMO-2, a unit located at Da Nang Air Base, a US military complex located in Vietnam during the war. It's the designation for Marine Corp Observation Squadron 2 which, really was based in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam from 1965 to 1971. T.C. wears that ball cap as well.
Thomas Sullivan Magnum III:
Thanks doctor, you're a lifesaver.
Thomas Sullivan Magnum III: Lifesaver... I'm a coroner.
Hawaii has some of the most stringent firearm laws in the United States. It is nearly impossible to obtain an open or concealed carry handgun permit, and as of 2017, less than 200 people on all of the islands of the state, not including law enforcement officers, have an open or concealed carry handgun permit. Yet the entire series shows all of the major characters both armed with handguns and freely carrying and using them. This would not be possible.
In the original German dubbed version from the 80's (for ARD) all references to Thomas Magnum's Vietnam missions were deleted and the series was cut down to fit its given time slot. Creative dubbing hid the cuts. In 1994 the series was re-dubbed (for RTL), this time in it's original, uncut form.
