America loves biopics about its most famous musicians; 2022's "Elvis" was a smash hit that turned Austin Butler into a star (as seen by his amazing turn as Feyd-Rautha in "Dune Part Two").
If The King is a movie star, it was only a matter of time before the Boss became one — and that time is now. 20th Century Studios and Disney will be producing the first Bruce Springsteen biopic, "Deliver Me From Nowhere." The film (adapted from the 2023 book of the same title by Warren Zanes) chronicles the making of Springsteen's sixth album, 1982's "Nebraska." Biopics are generally best when they don't try to cram a subject's whole life into a couple of hours, so that's a good sign.
Scott Cooper will write and direct "Deliver Me From Nowhere." Jeremy Allen White, currently starring on "The Bear," is in talks to play Springsteen; look and energy-wise, there's no better casting in Hollywood right now.

Exclusive: In a move that points to a change in direction he will take at the helm of Disney live action and 20th Century Studios, former Searchlight co-head David Greenbaum has made his first big statement buy, and it’s set to the music of Bruce Springsteen’s seminal album Nebraska.
20th Century has closed a deal to finance and release Deliver Me from Nowhere, the narrative film that Scott Cooper is writing to direct with Emmy-winning The Bear star Jeremy Allen White playing The Boss in a pivotal moment in his life. Grappling with personal demons and trying to wrap his arms around becoming a global superstar, Springsteen wrote and recorded Nebraska, the 1982 album that rivals Joni Mitchell’s Blue as one of the most emotionally raw, dark and honest albums in recent music history.
When Deadline revealed that the project was coming together, A24 was expected to be the distributor.

From The Beef to The Boss – Jeremy Allen White might be stepping into the shoes of one of music’s all-time-greats. In recent years, the actor has received considerable acclaim for his central role in The Bear, following it up with wrestling hit The Iron Claw, and a Calvin Klein campaign that sent the internet into meltdown. And while The Bear is back in production on Season 3, White may next be set to play none other than Bruce Springsteen.
Reports indicate that White is in talks for the role in Deliver Me From Nowhere – not a full-on Bruce biopic, but a film specifically zoning in on the creation of his 1982 album Nebraska. Released as Springsteen’s fame was rocketing – it landed between smash double-album The River, and hit-packed behemoth Born In The USA – Nebraska was a total change of pace for the musician, a stripped-down acoustic album recorded on 4-track,...

Exclusive: In his first major film project since leaving as Netflix Film boss, Scott Stuber has teamed with Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein & Eric Robinson to make a film about The Boss. Scott Cooper is writing to direct Deliver Me from Nowhere, a narrative feature about Bruce Springsteen and the long effort to put together his seminal 1982 album Nebraska, which started to take shape as he and the E Street Band were laying down tracks for his massive hit album Born in the USA. It’s an adaptation of the Warren Zanes book published last year.
The Bear star Jeremy Allen White is top choice to play Springsteen, and talks are underway with A24 to make the movie. Negotiations haven’t begun with the actor, who would head to New Jersey for a fall shoot after the Emmy winner finishes Season 4 of The Bear in June.

A headlining set from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the beach in their spiritual home of Asbury Park, N.J., sounds more like a fannish fever dream than an actual festival booking. But that performance is actually happening Sept. 15, on the second night of the sixth annual Sea.Hear.Now festival. The festival, which has already hosted names as big as Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters (and will feature Noah Kahan as headliner the night before Springsteen), was founded in 2018 by famed photographer and Jersey native Danny Clinch...

Austin, TX – One thing that SXSW attracts are movie stars. With the big premieres headquartered at the famous art deco Paramount Theatre in Austin, audiences were treated to appearances by the legendary Susan Sarandon (“Gutter”), a reunited Cheech & Chong, and for the creme de la creme we were in the “Cage.” The great Nicolas Cage appeared on behalf of “Arcadian.”

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”
The vast majority of the Oscars prognosticators who’ve been shaping our odds all season agree that Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) will all clinch academy mentions for their lead performances. The last such quartet consisted of eventual winners Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”) and their respective costars,...

“I’ve played Fallout 76 on and off for the last five years, and I’m here to say it’s a great game!” says veteran director John Carpenter.
Fallout 76 might not have received the greatest of critical receptions on its release in 2018, but the online multiplayer RPG has a long-term fan in the shape of horror-film director John Carpenter.
Carpenter’s love of Bethesda’s Fallout 76 has been documented before. Back in 2022, he told the Av Club that he was “hooked” on Fallout 76. “I know it had bugs coming out, and a lot of it was put down, but I thought it was great,” he said. “It’s really fun to play.”

It seems the 75-year-old director remains a fan of Bethesda’s online RPG. Just this week, he was once again enthusing about Fallout 76 on X (aka Twitter), ahead of the addition of Atlantic City to the game.

Burt Lancaster was an Oscar-winning actor who appeared in dozens of movies until his death in 1994. But which titles are among his finest? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Lancaster’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1913, Lancaster got into acting after performing as an acrobat in the circus. He made his movie debut in 1946 with a leading role in the quintessential noir thriller “The Killers” (1946). He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for Fred Zinnemann‘s wartime drama “From Here to Eternity” (1953), winning the prize just seven years later for playing a fast-talking preacher in “Elmer Gantry” (1960). Lancaster would compete twice more in the category (“Birdman of Alcatraz” in 1962 and “Atlantic City” in 1981).
In the 1950s, the actor decided to chart his own career by forming the production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which churned out a number of successful titles including the Best Picture-winning “Marty...

A month after postponing his September concert dates, Bruce Springsteen has announced new tour dates for next year.
Springsteen’s and the E Street Band’s concert dates last month were delayed due to a peptic ulcer disease Springsteen had been suffering from and was undergoing treatment for it. Before postponing the September dates, they had also previously canceled some shows in March, citing an unspecified illness.
Last Friday, Springsteen listed the newly rescheduled dates and said, “All tickets for the postponed performances remain valid for the newly announced dates.”
Springsteen added in his post that new Canada tour dates will be announced this week.

Few experiences in rock compare with seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in New Jersey. That’s why fans from all over the globe descended on East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium on Aug. 30, Sept. 1, and Sept. 3. Anticipation ran high because seven years ago they delivered some of the most memorable nights in history of the band at the same venue, culminating with a four-hour extravaganza that spotlighted Springsteen’s first three albums.
At that point in time, Springsteen was still grabbing signs from the audience and playing “Stump The Band.

As of late, Bruce Springsteen has received some criticism from fans for sticking to a rigid setlist during the E Street Band’s ongoing world tour. No one who attended The Boss’ hometown show in E. Rutherford, NJ on Sunday left complaining though; Springsteen deviated from the tour’s traditional setlist by subbing in seven fan favorites.
Over the course of 28-song performance, Springsteen and E Street Band treated fans to renditions of “Two Hearts,” Something in the Night,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Atlantic City,” “Jungleland,” “Detroit Medley,” and “Jersey Girl.”
All told, it made for easily the best setlist of the tour. The second half of the show was particularly epic, as the band finished the main set with “The Rising,” “Badlands,” and “Thunder Road,” and followed that up with a seven-song encore featuring “Jungleland,” “Born to Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Detroit Medley,” “Dancing in the Dark,” “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,...

The 80th annual Venice Film Festival launches on the Lido on August 30. This edition features a slew of Oscar hopefuls including Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Yorgas Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.” They’re all vying for the top prize, the Golden Lion.
Seventy years ago, there were four now-classics in competition: William Wyler’s “Roman Holiday,” for which Audrey Hepburn would win Oscar, John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge,” Samuel Fuller’s “Pickup on South Street” and Vincente Minnelli’s “The Bad and the Beautiful,” which had recently picked up five Oscars. But the Golden Lion didn’t roar at the 14th edition of the international film festival.

Above: US one sheet for Gas. Art by Robert Grossman. How much attention do you pay to title treatments? By that I mean—in case it’s not obvious—the way the title of a film appears on a poster. Title treatments can range from the simple to the spectacular, from mere type to elaborate works of art. They can range from, for example, the unadorned but authoritative Gotham Bold sans serif of Oppenheimer (2023) to Robert Grossman’s air brushed petrol hose spelling out the title of the movie Gas. Whereas the title treatment of Oppenheimer was dwarfed by the radioactive image of J. Robert and his atom bomb, the title treatment for the other cinematic sensation of the summer dwarfed its characters. In fact it was just the first letter of that title treatment, the instantly recognizable iconic B of Mattel’s ’80s Barbie logo.Title treatments matter. They set a tone.

Whether or not you agree with Quentin Tarantino’s unsparing assertion that “’80s cinema is, along with the ’50s, the worst era in Hollywood history,” there’s a curiously undeniable truth to his follow-up statement: “Matched only by now! Matched only by the current era.” Revisiting the defining movies of the ’80s from our current perspective at the height of Barbenheimer summer, two things become abundantly clear.
The first is that modern Hollywood would probably need a Barbenheimer every month in order to equal the creative output of a studio system that used to be capable of releasing “Blade Runner” and “The Thing” on the same night as if it were just another Friday. The second is that, in a wide variety of different ways both negative and not, the ’80s provide a perfect match for the movies of our current moment — if not the current moment itself.
Perhaps that...

FX’s What We Do in the Shadows might be the bloodiest sitcom on television. A trio of ancient vampires — Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry) and his wife, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) — bunk together in a spooky Staten Island manse with an annoying pedant who feeds off others’ energy (Colin Robinson, the energy vampire played by Mark Proksch) and their human familiar (Harvey Guillén as Guillermo de la Cruz). The vampires have lived here for more than a century, yet the bumblers have yet to fulfill the mission they set out to achieve upon their arrival from the Old World: to take over America and turn its citizens into bloodsuckers. Showrunners Paul Simms and Stefani Robinson spoke to THR about the Emmy-nominated third season of the comedy series and how they balance humor with vampire frights.

Specialty U.S. distributors Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures have acquired Italian director Pasquale Marrazzo’s LGBTQ drama “The Neighbor” for release in North America from Rome-based Coccinelle Film Sales.
“The Neighbor” (which is titled “Hotel Milano” in Italy) is about two young men who are in love but get bullied by a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads that makes their life impossible as hatred and intolerance seeps into the rapport between their respective families.
It’s the fifth feature written and directed by Marrazzo whose debut “South of the Sun” launched from Toronto’s Discovery section in 2001. Marrazzo’s “I Dream of the World on Friday” was in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present Competition in 2009.
Marrazzo self-produced “Neighbor” does not yet have Italian distribution. Pic stars newcomer actors Michele Costabile and Jacopo Costantini as the leads and boasts a score by prizewinning Italian composer Teho Teardo.

What movie won Best Picture 40 years ago? It’s doubtful you can remember off the top of your head, but upon hearing its iconic electronic score, a vision of British Olympic athletes running on the beach would likely spring to mind and the answer would be obvious: “Chariots of Fire.”

Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel have been cast as the leads of Fox’s upcoming country music drama “Monarch,” the broadcast network said Tuesday.
Premiering at midseason, “Monarch” is described as “an epic, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music,” the fictional Romans.
Per Fox, “The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough-as-nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon). Along with her beloved husband, Albie, Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.”

Hello, everyone! I hope you have your wallets ready because we have a huge day of horror and sci-fi home media releases this week, and there are a ton of different titles fans are definitely going to want to add to their collections. Blue Underground has given the criminally undercelebrated Dead & Buried the 4K treatment for their 3-Disc Limited Edition release of the film, and if you’re a big fan of sci-fi/action movies, you’ll definitely want to pick up the latest Vestron Video release, The Wraith, which Lionsgate is putting out on Blu this Tuesday as well.
As far as recent genre fare goes, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, Jakob’s Wife, Initiation and 32 Malasana Street are all headed home on various formats, and if you happen to be a big fan of the Saw series, you can also nab brand new Blu-rays for the first eight Saw films this week,...

Despite a relatively unassuming title, Henry Butash’s ruminative feature debut, The Atlantic City Story, is a quietly profound, muted character study, following two wayward souls at a crossroads in their lives, looking to the faux-glamour of Atlantic City as a possible escape. While hitting familiar narrative beats, the film features a career-best performance by notable character actor Jessica Hecht and relative newcomer Mike Faist (perhaps most famous for his work in Dear Evan Hansen), marking an auspicious debut for the first-time director.
Trapped in a seemingly routine marriage, Jane (Hecht) decides to flee her suburban Jersey life on her birthday, buying a bus ticket and, ultimately, a hotel room in the casino. The show must go on. At least the Venice Film Festival must go on. Even a pandemic can’t stop the oldest international film festival from taking place Sept. 2 through Sept. 12 in the picturesque of grand canals. Of course, safety is first with masks, social distancing etc. are all in place as critics get a first glance at possible award-winners.
Over the past seven years, the festival has held world premieres of such Oscar-winners as 2013’s “Gravity”; 2014’s “Birdman”; 2015’s “Spotlight”; 2016’s “La La Land”; 2017’s “The Shape of Water”; 2018’s “Roma”; and 2019’s “Joker.” Only two films that won the festival’s top prize have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars: 1948’s “Hamlet” and 2017’s “The Shape of Water.”

With The Umbrella Academy returning for a second season this Friday, superhero shows remain a solid investment for Netflix. Whether licensed or original, the US version of Netflix currently has 61 superhero-themed series available to stream, including multiple shows from the Arrowverse, the Netflix McU originals and quite a ridiculous amount of Power Rangers content. What are some of the highlights, then, of Netflix’s superpowered series?
Well, in terms of The CW’s Arrowverse, Netflix has the back catalogue of Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, as well as Black Lightning, which taken together represents 536 episodes. While the quality of the shows may vary at times, the Arrowverse is arguably one of the best adaptations of the DC Universe to the screen and showed the potential of television to embrace the storytelling format of comics. Please welcome new contributor Nick Taylor. He's been sharing insightful comments on his reader ballots for years so he now joins the team to talk about Supporting Actresses who weren't nominated to coincide with our upcoming Smackdown events.
The 54th Academy Awards celebrated an insular group for 1981. Only nine films were represented between all four acting categories. If you expand that circle to include the nominations for Picture, Director, and Screenplay it's only a whopping twelve films hogging forty above-the-line slots. Every Supporting Actress nominee (to be discussed soon) had a co-star recognized in a different category. But when you look to performances outside of the nominated shortlist, like Kate Reid in Atlantic City or Karen Allen in Raiders of the Lost Ark, it’s hard not to wonder why things shook out the way they did.
Or consider Jessica Harper’s perfectly controlled performance in Pennies From Heaven. Adapted from a 1978 British miniseries,...

Bruce Springsteen has no shortage of original songs about New Jersey that he could have played near the end of the Jersey 4 Jersey fundraising event on Wednesday night. “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” would have been a touching tribute to his adopted boardwalk town, while “My Hometown” would have been a bittersweet look at his childhood in Freehold, and “My City of Ruins” would have gone back to its original, pre-9/11 meaning as an elegy for the struggling community of Asbury Park, now devastated once again due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During a recent solo performance in Nashville, Low Cut Connie’s Adam Weiner talked about growing up in New Jersey and visiting Atlantic City in the summer. Despite the beaches and boardwalk, it wasn’t a rosy picture. The advent of casinos to the decaying seaside resort town in the late ’70s and early ’80s failed to deliver on the promise of long-term prosperity, and as gambling became legalized across the country, Atlantic City crapped out.

Up until late Saturday afternoon, the odds of Bruce Springsteen showing up at the annual Asbury Park charity concert Light of Day seemed pretty miniscule. He was a regular (unannounced) guest at the show – which raises money to fight Parkinson’s Disease – most every year from its inception in 2000 through 2015, but he missed the past four consecutive shows. This year, he was booked to host an equestrian event in Wellington, Florida 24 hours before the start of the Light of Day festivities. Making matters worse, a winter storm just happened to...

Burt Lancaster in Frank and Eleanor Perry's The Swimmer (1968), based upon the John Cheever short story. Courtesy of Film Forum. For decades, film critics and academics interested in the classical Hollywood cinema have been dutifully studying the canonized big stars—Cary Grant, Garbo, the Hepburns, Bogart and Bacall, Dietrich and Crawford and Monroe—while downplaying one of the most highly varied and fascinating careers of any studio actor: Burt Lancaster. Now, New York’s Film Forum is giving us a great excuse to revisit this actor’s towering body of work—emphasis on “body.” From big-name classics like Louis Malle’s Atlantic City (1980) and John Frankenheimer’s Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) to little-known masterpieces like Carol Reed’s Trapeze (1956) and Luchino Visconti’s late decadent chamber drama Conversation Piece (1974), a meaty, healthy range of Burt is on display for the next four weeks, between July 19 to August 15.Serious film talk...

With his square jaw, gymnast’s physique, and megawatt grin, Burt Lancaster (1913–1994) must have been a boon to movie poster artists and over the years he was drawn or painted by many great affichistes. I could have curated a post on just the Italian renditions of Lancaster alone: over the years he was painted by Ercole Brini, Anselmo Ballester, Luigi Martinati, Renato Casaro, Averardo Ciriello, and many more. To mark the retrospective I have selected 50 of my favorite illustrated images of the indelible star, from his brooding film noir youth (though he was actually 33 when he made his debut in The Killers), through his serious thespian mid-period to his...

Midland held court at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night, delivering a headlining set full of hits like “Drinkin’ Problem” and “Burn Out,” new songs off their upcoming second album and a slew of bar-band covers. That the gig also fell on Cinco de Mayo only made it that much more of a party. Here are five reasons you should have been there.
1. Midland’s New Material
If the new songs that Midland debuted on Sunday night are any indication, the trio is doubling down on making Eagles country-rock cool again.

One too many subplots results in Billions Season 4’s first convoluted, albeit still entertaining, misfire.
This Billionsreview contains spoilers.
Billions Season 4 Episode 3
So far, Billionsseason 4 has spent most of its energy following the intersecting stories of former rivals Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis). The ex-United States Attorney and the billionaire hedge fund manager initially buried the hatchet last season, and have since kept in constant contact in order to avenge themselves against the Attorney General’s office and analyst wunderkind Taylor Amber Mason (Asia Kate Dillon). But the Billions tide began to turn with last week’s “Arousal Template.”
Same goes for this week’s “Chickentown,” which quite literally begins with a brief selection from Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” and juxtaposing shots of Manhattan and an older farmer riding around a giant chicken coop on an electric scooter. Yes, Rhoades, Axelrod and Mason...

The annual Tibet House benefit is a New York City musical tradition, always well-curated by composer and downtown arts ambassador emeritus Philip Glass. The organization’s mission is to preserve, protect, promote and advance Tibetan culture — and with its focus on peace (inner and outer), meditation, healing and happiness, that mission couldn’t be more timely. So the event, billed as the 32nd annual (give or take a few; no one seems to recall exactly), was especially welcome this year. And as usual, the music captured the spirit of the moment.

After becoming the 13th person to win two Directors Guild of America Awards, Alfonso Cuaron is poised to join an even more exclusive group: two-time Best Director BAFTA winners.
The “Roma” director is our odds-on favorite to take home the prize at Sunday’s ceremony, with 31/10 odds over Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favourite”), Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”), Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) and Pawel Pawlikowski (“Cold War”). He previously won for his direction of “Gravity” (2013), for which he also won the Oscar.
Only eight people have double Best Director BAFTA Awards, the most wins in the category. The most recent to join this club was Joel Coen, who took home his second statuette for “No Country for Old Men” (2007) to go with his win for “Fargo” (1996).

Michel Legrand, three-time Oscar winner and composer of such classic film songs as “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “I Will Wait for You,” “You Must Believe in Spring” and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?,” along with the groundbreaking musical score for “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” has died. Ethan Hawke is this awards’ season critical darling earning several best actor nods from critic’s groups including the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. and New York Film Critics Circle for his powerful performance as a troubled clergyman haunted with his past and the future in Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed.”
Hawke, who also won the Gotham Awards honor for best actor, is also nominated for a Critics Choice and a Film Independent Spirit Award but was snubbed in the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.
But Hawke, who has received four previously Oscar nominations including for supporting actor for 2014’s “Boyhood,” shouldn’t give up the faith about a fifth nomination.
