Arnold Schwarzenegger made a whole slew of classic 80s action movies. Still, one remains totally obscure despite being released smack dab in the middle of his amazing The Terminator to Predator run of movies from 1984-87. That film in 1986’s Raw Deal. A formulaic 80s action flick, it’s the most modestly mounted Schwarzenegger action epic of the era, with Arnie coerced into starring in it to complete a long-standing contract he had with producer Dino De Laurentiis following Conan The Barbarian.
In it, Schwarzenegger is somewhat unconvincingly cast as a small-town sheriff named Kaminski, who used to be an FBI agent but was forced out of the bureau after roughing up a suspect. He’s recruited by his old mentor (The Night Stalker’s legendary Darren McGavin) whose son was killed by the Chicago mob. He wants Kaminski to go undercover in the mob and tear them apart from the inside.

I don’t usually cover shorts, I always seem to have more features to review than I do time, but I had to make an exception for The Shepherd. I remembered reading Frederick Forsyth’s novella when I was growing up, and a reading of it by the late Al Maitland has been a Christmas tradition on CBC radio since 1979. So, telling myself that since The Academy considers forty minutes to be feature length I finally used the Disney+ subscription my wife got us and checked it out.

Prime Video has a fair amount in store for subscribers in November, as the uber-violent hit animated show Invincible returns for its highly anticipated second season. Based on the iconic comic book by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, season two will find super-powered protagonist Mark attempting to rebuild his life after finding out the truth about his father Nolan.
Elsewhere on the streamer, the producing team behind the James Bond movies are out to spin the franchise in a completely different direction by debuting their curious new globe-trotting adventure series, pitched somewhere between a quiz show and a treasure hunt. 007: Road To A Million features Brian Cox as the game’s “mastermind”, watching over the contestants as they try to win a million quid.

The second season of original series “Almost Paradise” is set to premiere on Freevee on July 21. When hypertension forces DEA agent Alex Walker (played by Christian Kane) into early retirement, he moves to the Philippines in hopes of a quieter life. But unfortunately for him, he can’t avoid danger. Soon, the local police ask him to help solve a series of serious crimes.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the reality competition series which is hosted by drag queen RuPaul Charles, won big with five Emmys in several categories, including Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program (which is RuPaul’s sixth straight Emmy win for the category).

Pink Floyd will break out the streamlined remix of their 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, that recently appeared on their box set, The Later Years, as its own release this fall. For the release, frontman David Gilmour and engineer Andy Jackson reconfigured the album from scratch, with help from Damon Iddins, getting rid of a lot of Eighties signposts (like ultrareverberated drums) and boosting the contributions of late Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright. It also features newly recorded drum parts by the band’s Nick Mason. The album is home...

Playing René Belloq in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is something English actor Paul Freeman has always taken pride in. “The fact that it just keeps giving is wonderful,” he says.
Portraying the rival archaeologist in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated film has made him a staple in the Indiana Jones canon, but it isn’t just Belloq that brought him fame. In an interview with Variety, Freeman discusses his time working on “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” the 1995 movie version of the superhero TV show, where he played the purple villain Ivan Ooze.
Freeman, 78, has had a long career that runs the gamut from Gustav Reibmann in the television soap opera “Falcon Crest” to the Reverend Shooter in Edgar Wright’s “Hot Fuzz.” As a classically trained theater actor, he’s taken on the words of David Mamet (“Glengarry Glen Ross”) and William Shakespeare (“Henry V”).

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour dynasty started inauspiciously in 1981 when the singer and guitarist re-recorded every note of “Money” by himself, save the sax solo, for the compilation A Collection of Great Dance Songs. At the time, he just did what he needed to do; the band’s new record label couldn’t get the rights to the original Dark Side of the Moon hit so he recut it himself, no other Floyds necessary. Two years later, Roger Waters would resume control and oversee the group’s next LP, The Final Cut,...

The Stana Katic-led “Absentia” has been renewed for a second season by Amazon, the streamer announced Thursday. The sophomore installment is currently in production in Sofia, Bulgaria and set to debut in 2019 on Prime Video.
“Castle” alum Katic stars in and executive produces “Absentia,” which centers on FBI agent Emily Byrne (Katic). In season one, Emily disappeared without a trace and was declared dead after hunting one of Boston’s most notorious serial killers. Six years later, Emily was found in a cabin in the woods, barely alive, and with no memory of the years she was missing. Returning home to learn her husband had remarried and her son was being raised by another woman, she soon found herself implicated in a new series of murders.
In season two, after tracking down and killing her abductor, Emily struggles for a tenuous new normal with son Flynn and ex-husband Nick.

The hugely ambitious Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has no shortage of classic episodes. And you'll find a few Klingons here too...
Spoilers lie ahead for Star Trek: Deep Space 9
See related Little Me: My Life From A-z by Matt Lucas review
Overlapping with both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons had some very high points, It also had some very low ones that strayed a bit too far from the core of Star Trek for some fans, yet gave the show a unique texture that some savour.
If you only ever watch 25 stories from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, these are they, at least in my opinion – the only rule being that multi-part episodes count as one story (but great big multi-season Dominion flavoured arcs don't!)

UK release from Second Sight.
By Tim Greaves
A quartet of ageing gentlemen friends (Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Melvyn Douglas) meet up on a weekly basis in the snow sprinkled town of Milburn, New England in order to exchange scary stories. Self-dubbed ‘The Chowder Society’, they challenge one another to come up with something truly unsettling. Good natured entertainment takes a sinister turn when a dastardly secret that has lain dormant for more than 50 years rears its terrifying head. Drawn helplessly from sweat-sodden nightmares into a living nightmare more frightening and deadly than anything conjured up in their yarning sessions, the comrades’ collective fate falls to the hands of a seemingly unstoppable entity hell bent on revenge. But revenge for what? What could the friends have possibly done all those years ago that was so terrible?
Now wait just a moment... Fred Astaire made a horror movie?...

The Bond franchise which has been with us so long, has become so deeply entrenched in popular culture, that we often forget what it was that first distinguished the Bonds a half-century ago. Skyfall might be one of the best of the Bonds, and even, arguably, one of the best big-budget big-action flicks to come along in quite a while, but it’s not alone. The annual box office is – and has been, for quite some time – dominated by big, action-packed blockbusters of one sort of another. The Bonds aren’t even the only action-driven spy flicks (Mr. James Bond, I’d like you to meet Mr. Jason Bourne and Mr. Ethan Hunt).
That’s not to take anything away from the superb entertainment Skyfall is, or the sentimentally treasured place the Bonds hold. It’s only to say that where there was once just the one, there are now many.

Watch Walken waltz in, Buscemi step it out with De Blasio, a cat who thinks he is an escapologist and a Disney near-disaster
We've got our dancing shoes on this week and start the list with a wonderful dance compilation featuring Christopher Walken. The much-imitated actor has appeared in more than 100 films and television shows, including The Deer Hunter, Annie Hall, The Dogs of War, The Dead Zone, A View to a Kill, True Romance, Pulp Fiction and Catch Me If You Can, as well as music videos by many recording artists, including Madonna. In 2001 Walken helped to choreograph a video for Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice, which won six MTV awards.
Someone who could do with a little Walken magic is New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, who makes his debut at the Inner Circle Show later this month. Luckily he gets some training tips from Steve Buscemi for the charity event,...

Scottish actor Christopher Malcolm, who was a regular screen presence through the early seventies through the late eighties, and a cast regular on hit British comedy Absolutely Fabulous, died today at the age of 67. His passing was confirmed by his daughter, playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, via Twitter. Today the world lost a beautiful, brilliant man. My dad Christopher Malcolm left peacefully and with dignity. He will always be my hero. X — morgan lloyd malcolm (@mogster) February 15, 2014 In addition to his television and film roles, Malcolm was an accomplished, classically trained Shakespearean actor, beginning his career with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company in England. He performed in standards like “Macbeth” and ”Hamlet,” though his push to mainstream audiences came during his appearance as Brad Majors in The Royal Court Theatre’s original run of “The Rocky Horror Show” in 1973. While a number of the stage cast transitioned to Jim Sharman’s big screen adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show...

Director John Irvin, who dramatised John le Carré's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, will shed light on mystery of pistol in Mandela's Gun
His dramatisation of John le Carré's espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy starring Alec Guinness remains a British television classic. More than three decades later, director John Irvin is attempting to chronicle another shadowy life story: Nelson Mandela's years as a guerrilla freedom fighter.
Irvin announced on Friday a drama-documentary that will contain fresh revelations about Mandela's "odyssey" across Africa, his military training and his readiness to kill defenders of South Africa's apartheid regime.
It will also aim to shed light on the mystery of a pistol, said to have been a gift to Mandela from Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, which has been missing for half a century.

Veteran screenwriter Lem Dobbs ("Dark City," "The Limey," "The Company You Keep") has been hired to pen the script for the film adaptation of Frederick Forsyth's latest thriller novel "The Kill List".
"Snow White and the Hunstman" director Rupert Sanders is still onboard to helm the project which Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz ("The Counselor") are set to produce.
The story follows a U.S. Special Forces agent tasked with tracking down a powerful terrorist in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game.
Forsyth penned such legendary works as "The Day of the Jackal," "The Odessa File" and "The Dogs of War" which all saw film adaptations. 'Kill List' though would mark the first adaptation of a Forsyth novel since 1987's "The Fourth Protocol" starring Michael Caine and a young Pierce Brosnan.

He last made a film where a young woman steps up to become a warrior in Snow White And The Huntsman, and for a possible future project, Rupert Sanders appears ready more combat. He’s attached to make the adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s The Kill List.“Day Of The Jackal, Odessa File and The Dogs Of War are three of the finest works of modern espionage. It is an incredible privilege to work from Forsyth’s new novel,” Sanders said in a statement picked up by Deadline.“It is a thrilling read and frighteningly accurate. It immerses us in the shadowy worlds of terrorists, spies, private contractors, Us and UK Special Forces. It spans an epic, international world and delves deep into the psychology of its two main characters, the ‘hunter’ a Us Special Forces Tracker and ‘the hunted,’ an extreme fundamentalist terrorist. Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders has signed on to direct The Kill List, based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth.
Sanders is a big fan for Forsyth’s work. Here he talks about why he chose The Kill List:

It is a thrilling read and frighteningly accurate. It immerses us in the shadowy worlds of terrorists, spies, private contractors, Us and UK special forces. It spans an epic, international world and delves deep into the psychology of its two main characters – ‘the hunter’ – a Us Special Forces Tracker and ‘the hunted’ an extreme fundamentalist terrorist. Forsyth’s depth of research and authenticity creates a vivid and frightening story – a nightmare scenario that is all too possible.

Director Rupert Sanders made a pretty impressive feature film directorial debut with last year’s “Snow White and the Huntsman”, though he might be more famous as “the older married guy who had an affair with Kristen Stewart”, star of “Huntsman”. Which is unfortunate, because like I said, for all its faults, “Huntsman” was a pretty impressive debut. Sanders has since moved on with his life and career, and he’s now set to helm a big-screen adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth thriller “The Kill List”. Sanders is gung-ho about the project, too, telling Deadline: Day Of The Jackal, Odessa File and The Dogs Of War are three of the finest works of modern espionage. Exclusive: Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders has come attached to direct The Kill List, an adaptation of the new Frederick Forsyth thriller that was acquired by producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler. Give those producers credit for wasting no time, as they just bought the book last month. After they acquired the Cormac McCarthy spec script The Counselor, they had that film in production in record time at Fox with Ridley Scott directing and a cast headed by Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Sanders, who made his feature directing debut on Huntsman, has always been a big fan of Forsyth’s espionage thrillers, and Kill List reminded him of this Hemingway line: “There is no hunting like the hunting of men, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.

(*My apologies for this coming so long after Sound on Sight’s celebration of 50 years of James Bond, but I’ve been swamped with end-of-semester work and only just now managed to finish this. Hope you all still find this of interest.)
As a coda to the Sos’s James Bond salute, there’s still a point I think deserves to be made.

Last week we asked Film Junk readers to put aside their Christopher Walken impressions to take a serious look at the man's filmography and pick his finest moment on screen. Although most of the options got a decent number of votes (leading to our first ever three-way tie for fifth place), there was definitely a clear winner here. Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter topped the poll with 38% of the votes, proving that if you can hold your own with Robert DeNiro you will impress a lot of people. It also happens to be the same movie that earned Christopher Walken his only Oscar to date... I'm just sayin'. Coming in at #2 was Tony Scott's True Romance, followed by The Dead Zone and Catch Me If You Can. Meanwhile The King of New York, Batman Returns and A View to a Kill were all deadlocked for the final spot...

When New York Times critic Bosley Crowther reviewed "The Dirty Dozen" upon its release (45 years ago this week, on June 15, 1967), he blasted the World War II action drama for its characters' "hot, sadistic zeal," its "astonishingly wanton" depiction of war, the way its violent-felons-turned-heroes plot "encourag[es] a spirit of hooliganism that is brazenly antisocial" and its "studied indulgence of sadism that is morbid and disgusting beyond words." If a similar action movie came out today, those would all be its selling points. Indeed, in recent decades, we've come to take Robert Aldrich's ultramacho commando flick for granted, not because it hasn't aged well (it still delivers the goods), but because it's been copied by so many movies and TV shows that its innovations seem old hat now. But 45 years ago, it not only pushed the envelope (in ways that disgusted Crowther but so delighted audiences that it was one...

Let's sum it up right now; Cameraman: the Life and Work of Jack Cardiff makes for hugely entertaining watching and anyone with the slightest interest in its remarkable subject should see it the moment they get the chance. The film's main flaw is that, on a technical level, it's arguably not that great.
Director Craig McCall, working over a period of seventeen years (!) simply isn't able to successfully organise the vast amount of material available to him (to be fair, Cardiff had a very long life, and left behind a great deal of work) and his documentary feels frustratingly rushed, clumsily paced and somewhat unsatisfying. Fortunately for him, even the most incompetent filmmaker would struggle to make Jack Cardiff's story any less than enthralling.
He remains - at the time of writing - the only cinematographer to be awarded an honorary Oscar for a lifetime's achievement. While these are...
