The accidental death of the older son of an affluent family deeply strains the relationships among the bitter mother, the good-natured father, and the guilt-ridden younger son.
The second in a series of Oscar winning films about dysfunctional mothers; the first would be "Kramer vs. Kramer", the next one after "Ordinary People" would be "Terms of Endearment".
Conrad, I'm not a very good bowler, what I mean is, I'm a funny bowler.
Conrad "Con" Jarrett: Oh, well we don't have to go bowling if you'd rather not. How funny are ya?
Jeannine: On a scale of one to ten... about a ten.
Conrad "Con" Jarrett: Oh... yeah, that's pretty funny.
While Conrad is watching the swim meet and fighting outside of school, he has a red plaid shirt under a gray sweater. When he arrives back at his grandmother's house and the subsequent scenes, he has a white with thin blue stripes shirt and a beige sweater. This second outfit is what he wore for his date with Jannine, so the sequence at his grandmother's may originally have been intended to occur in the film between the date and the swim meet but later was moved to occur after the swim meet.
