  • Jagatpal (Ajit) manipulates his sister-in-law (Urmilla Bhatt) to sign the estate away to him, which she does, and is subsequently thrown out, leaving two boys in the care of Jagatpal. The two boys have grown up to fear and obey their uncle, Balram (Amitabh Bachchan) is now a police inspector, and Bholuram (Dharmendra) is a motor mechanic. Bholuram and Balram continue to acquire wealth, by hook or by crook, for their uncle. In so doing, Bholuram incurs the wrath of Chandan Singh (Prem Chopra) and Suleiman Seth (Amjad Khan). In the meantime Balram has fallen for Shobha (Rekha), and Bholuram for Madhu (Zeenat Aman), little knowing that Madhu is the daughter of none other than his uncle, Jagatpal(Ajit)..Ajit one of the great stylish villain in the 70's. what an actor at that time..

It could have been much better. Amitabh and Dharmendra were not utilized fully in the true action sense. The plot was weak and complicated. Poor direction I would say.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Ram Balram(1980) was known as the comeback of Amitabh-Dharam jodi after SHOLAY, CHUPKE CHUPKE(1975). In the former films Dharam had the main lead while Big B had the supporting role(as Dharam was a bigger star when both films were being made) but when the film released things got changed. Big B became the numero uno of Bollywood. RAM BALRAM had for once both in equal roles. The story is quite good with Evil Ajit making use of his 2 nephews to become rich, Not entirely convincing though like films of 70s and 80s but yet the film is quite well handled. There are several clapworthy scenes and good dramatic scenes. Amitabh and Dharam's chemistry makes for a good song Ek Rasta Do Raahi where both are seen driving a car, sitting over it and having a joy time, just like Yeh Dosti. The film has all the typical formula of 70s like long lost brothers, sisters and a dead mother who comes back to life and happy ending

Direction by Vijay Anand is quite good, he had to face a lot of ego hassles between both the stars notwithstanding. Music by LP is fantastic, Ek Rasta is terrific with Kishore(for Big B) and Rafi's vocals suiting both, Ladki Pasand Ki, Humse Bhool Ho Gayi and other songs are fab

Dharmendra as usual entertains and does his role very well Amitabh Bachchan is apt in a tailormade role, he has done such roles many times Rekha and Zeenat Aman are the heroines and are good Amongst rest Ajit is suitabily villainy while Amjad Khan, Prem Chopra do well as the villains Helen is good(surprising she played Zeenat's mom when Dharam was 4 years older to her)

At The Box Office, the film opened well but finally was declared semi-hit which was disappointing, after this film Amitabh and Dharam never worked again in their haydays, except guest appearances in some films,Dharam in Andha Kanoon for e.g. They re-united recently in Hum Kaun Hai?(2004)
  • Amitabh and Dharmendra were the top stars of 70's-80's. Unfortuantely they came together in 3 movies-Sholay,Chupke-Chupke and Ram-Balram.Fortunately for their fans whenever they came together they formed an amazing team.Ram-balram is such a movie where u will love their chemistry and aided by fast pace and lots of action it becomes worth watching.

This film is special as it is the only Amitabh-Dharam film in which both of them have equal roles. Otherwise both in Sholay and Chupke-Chupke Dharamendra had a bigger role. The film is directed by Vijay Anand who is known more for his Guide and Jewel Thief than for action flicks like Johny Mera Naam. But he handles the action oriented,star-studded Ram-balram quite well.

The topic of 2 brothers on opposite sides of law became a common feature of soem Amitabh's movies like Deewar,Suhaag, Parvarish. But none of them were so cool and celebrated about it as this movie. Here there is no tension between the brothers for this reason. On the contrary they proclaim it loudly in a amazing song ''Ek Rastaa Aha haa...''
  • Warning: Spoilers
Vijay Anand, who had previous directed such masterpieces like Guide, Jewel Thief and Johnny Mera Naam returned in 1980 with his most commercial movie starring two of the biggest stars at the time, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachan.

Whilst it is good to see the pair return after Sholay, the movie itself isn't really upto scratch.

It is a very typical masala movie with the usual lost and found formula. The story as it is revolves around Japatpal (Ajit) who falsely claims himself to be the illegitimate brother of two wealthy brothers and kills them. Then he drowns their wife, leaving him with all the wealth and the responsibility of bringing up the sons of the brothers, Ram and Balram. He decides to make Ram a cunning thief whilst Balram becomes a policeman.

They get into all sorts of scrapes, meeting their leading ladies (Rekha and Zeenat Aman), getting involved with crooks before being reunited with their mother and how they seek vengeance against Japatpal forms the rest of the story leading upto a prolonged finale.

It does have some strong points, the music is superb, particularly the song Ek Raasta Do Rahee (lifted off Bee gees song That's the way I like it).

It also has the distinct advantage of having not one but 4 villains in the form of Ajit, Sujit Kumar, Prem Chopra and Amjad Khan in supporting roles.

The leads are perfectly fine but it is Ajit as the evil Jagatpal who steals the show. I remember seeing this movie as a young child and being completely terrified of him.

The only other significant movie Anand made after this was Rajput, which like Ram Balram took a long time to get made because of the star's busy schedules.

All in all one might consider this movie to be a forgettable fare from a director of Vijay Anand's calibre.
  • Okay, I guess if you're a Dharmendra or an Amitabh fan...and if you were really impressed with Sholay (like me), you should see this movie.

Jagatpal (Ajit) causes a misunderstanding between two brothers who he claims as relatives (but obviously not). While they were arguing, Ajit shoots both of them from the window, and frames them for murdering each other. Meanwhile he kills Ram's mother Saraswati who also raises her brother in-law's son Balram as her own (supposedly, but she pops up at the end somehow). Jagatpal forcefully raises Ram to be a thief, and Balram to be educated without the accompaniment of his brother/cousin. He does this with sharp-pointy objects on the ends of his crutches...if they don't listen he threatens to stab them.

Ram (Dharmendra) ends up being a car mechanic, and Balram (Amitabh Bachchan) ends up being a police officer. Jagatpal shares his plan, for Ram to be the best smuggler, and for Balram to be the best police officer. Balram tries to argue, but those annoying pointy things are once again a threat.

The first half of the movie (excluding the evilness of their evil uncle) was pretty entertaining ~ Dharmendra and Amitabh are first shown together and then shown in different scenes separately to show the differences and similarities in their life. Balram falls in love with Shoba (Rekha - a good couple I must say) and Ram falls in love with Madhu (Zeenat - she is very ugly in this movie and her a Dharam don't match). The part where they display their own girls to each other is pretty funny.

But I mean the VIOLENCE is just TOOOO much! I watch action movies, but this was ridiculous! After the first half, one who is watching this movie won't even be able to see the nice acting of the Dharmendra and Amitabh! It's like shooting and blowing up things all the time. And Jagatpal's evilness gets to be too much. It's hard to believe that it was so hard for toughies like Dharmendra and Amitabh to beat up a cripple.

I only rate it a nine because I am an ardent fan of Dharmendra as well as Amitabh and I wasn't particularly disappointed with their powerful performance combo. I recommend this movie if you like the actors, and if you're a fan of Laxmikant Pyarelal who made good songs (like Ek Rasta, Hama Maafi Dai Do, Yaar Ki Khabar, and Ladki Pasand). But if you're not then don't waste your time. I was thoroughly angry with Vijay Anand's violent and perverted direction.

    Stick with Sholay.
  • Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra team up together after SHOLAY(1975) and CHUPKE CHUPKE(1975)

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha are paired after MR NATWARLAL(1979) with Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman paired after SHALIMAR(1978) Ajit plays their mean uncle.

The film is mainly about Ajit's plan to use Dharmendra to kill the smugglers and Amitabh to save him But Amitabh has a plan of his own The climax is done-to-death

The film may not have reached the status of SHOLAY but is still very entertaining Above all the cast, Dharmendra-Amitabh are a perfect combo and have very good chemistry Zeenat Aman looks ugly with Dharam but is okay Rekha looks beautiful for Amitabh and both make a good pair Amjad Khan, Prem Chopra are typecast Ajit impresses with his evilness
  • Another one of the Dharmendra-Amitabh hit movies with a lot of action packed with good dialogues and comedy. They play the role of orphaned brothers Ram and Balram brought up by a nasty fake Uncle Jaggu. One brother becomes a mechanic and another a police-inspector. They don't know the truth about Jaggu's relationship with them until Jaggu's old girlfriend returns to town. Thrown in-between are some catchy songs 'Ek rasta...do raahi', 'Yaar ki khabar mil gayi..gayi', 'Ladki pasand ki mushkil se milti hai' and 'Balram ne bahut samjaaya'. Amitabh has perform many stunts himself in this film esp. riding the motorbike in the dockyard. A must-see for all Amitabh & Dharmendra fans!
  • This movie is my all-time favorite movie but i still didn't give it a 10 only because realistically it did average at the box-office and it wasn't as good to most people as was Sholay. The directors tried to recreate another Sholay but most of the audience did not accept it as anywhere close to Sholay. However, I loved the songs and the story had constant action from scene to scene and to me, it had no dull moments at all. I loved this movie more than Sholay and I thought Sholay was a classic. So maybe this might give all of you an insight into how good this movie was. If you guys and gals love the classic Amitabh Bachchan movies and haven't seen this one, then take it from me, this is a classic Amitabh Bachchan movie with all the drama and action that he became famous for. There's no harm in checking it out, if you don't like it, then it's only $1 wasted. If you do, and I'm sure most of you will enjoy it, then maybe you might end up buying it on DVD like i have. Another point, do check out the DVD version of this movie because most VHS tapes will have bad quality. Do check out this movie and you wont be disappointed!!!
  • Warning: Spoilers
May contain spoiler, but not too sure how much detail is too much.

Ram Balraam is the story about two cousins Ram (Dharmendra) and Balraam (Amitabh) who are closer than most brothers. Being orphaned at a young age, they are raised by their Mama or uncle (Ajit). The mama's purpose is to use the two boys to his own evil ends. He raises Ram as a thief and Balraam as a police officer. When the boys protest he would threaten to harm them. Mama's plan to have Ram do his dirty work and for Balraam to protect him from the law.

All is going well until he reveals his plan to the two boys after both have grown up. Unfortunately for the Mama, Balraam has become an honest police office and Ram an unwilling thief. So the brothers put their heads together and try to get out of the mess their in.

The rest of the story focuses (or tries to) on how the brothers discover what happened to their parents and avenge them. And as in every hindi movie, there has got to be some romance. In Ram Balraam, this comes in the form of Zeenat Aman (don't recall the name of her character) and Rekha (Shobha) respectively. Ram's romance is quite bland. But Balraam's is entertaining in some spots. The scenes between him and Shobha are quite likely the most entertaining in the film which is quite sad. The only reason for this was the chemistry between Amitabh and Rekha which surfaces in the worst of situations.

The film might not have so bad as I have made it out to be. It's just that i've seen the same sort of story many times before. And it hasn't even been treated in a different way. Same dialogues, same songs, same faces, same evil guys, you get the picture.

Music is not at all notable. Thats why cannot remember any of the songs. Seriously!

Performances are quite disappointing. Dharmendra is getting old and looks very bored with the film himself. Amitabh is good, although I like his comedy much better than his drama. The girls are girls. All they have to do is sing and dance around trees. Rekha is the better deal of the two. She is, as always charming, funny and sweet. Her facial expressions are a delight to watch. She can never disappoint, not me at least, except maybe in her choice of this film.

The most entertaining thing in the whole movie has to be everyone calling Balraam, Ballu. Everytime i heard that i was rolling on the floor. For some reason. I guess it was only because Amitabh is so tall and big and he is...Ballu (hilarious!)

Anyway, overall very average. Wouldn't say I recommend it but if your really bored one night and have watched every thing else in the video store then Ram Balraam might be a decent passtime.
  • Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan unite in this Vijay Anand directed film as brothers. Garam Dharam is a mechanic-thief and Amitabh is a police officer, who are manipulated from childhood by their uncle -Ajit - and he uses them to fill his pockets. They fear him, but will their fear change when they realise that Ajit killed their father and mother? You'll have to see this action-packed melodrama to find out.

Ram Balram might not be as famous or iconic as Sholay, but it's very enjoyable, it's plot and characterisation has you immersed in its story, and the exciting action set pieces vary from a western-style shoot-out to a well-staged car chases. The production is top class,so are the songs (Ladki Pasand Ki Mushkil Se Milti Hai, Mil Gayi, Mil Gayi" is my favourite), and Zeenat and Rekha make great leading ladies. But it's Ajit who steals the scene as the evil uncle, who frankly is a child abuser. Amjad Khan and Prem Chopra guest star. An energetic and highly entertaining masala film.

    Warning: Spoilers
Rams scenes are more entertaining, his fear of Jagatpal seems more genuine, also the scene where he gets beat up at scrap yard was very good, he seemed a lot more vunreble than Balram, as Balram had police force with him it's a brilliant movie they don't (can't) make em like this anymore.
