A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.
Outtakes of the shots of the Volkswagen Beetle travelling towards the Overlook Hotel at the start of the film were "plundered" by Ridley Scott (with Stanley Kubrick's permission) when he was forced to add the "happy ending" to the original release of Blade Runner (1982).
Jack Torrance:
Hi, I've got an appointment with Mr. Ullman. My name is Jack Torrance.
When Larry is walking into Durkin's garage and the phone is ringing. Larry tosses his gloves on the desk next to a small box and answers the phone, and it is Dick Hallorann on the other end. The scene cuts to Hallorann talking on a pay phone at an airport, then back to Larry who turns to his right and the gloves are still visible on the desk next to Larry's left elbow. The scene then cuts back to Hallorann at the airport for a brief moment then back to Larry and the gloves have mysteriously disappeared and the box has slightly moved.
The party music plays over the closing credits. After it ends, we hear the Overlook Hotel ghosts applaud. They then talk amongst themselves until their voices fade away.
ABC edited 4 minutes from the film for its 1983 network television premiere.
