Who could ever forget that simple theme song that played throughout most of the episode in some way or form. The Smurfs are blue elves who live a mostly peaceful life when they're not being pursued by Gargamel and his cat Azreal. Leading the Smurfs to survival is Papa Smurf and helping him is Smurfette (June Foray), Brainy Smurf, Clumsy Smurf and many more. The village is cool to look at. It's amazing how they survive. Not much to say other than it's very whimsical to watch.

But more than once they had to rescue the evil pair for more worst evil there. As of course being the villains that the are they are ungrateful there. Still it is a cute show and it deals with other issues besides chasing off the main antagonists.
Bring this back there. -

tanzimhusain26 March 2002I'm really surprised when I see that so few user comments on such a hallmark show. To me the Smurfs defined the 80's. And most importantly, it was what a cartoon should be - plain and simple fun, a touch of morale lessons and most importantly, very little violence.
When you consider other cartoons that were popular in the 80's like Thunder Cats, the Smurfs come out way up ached, in all departments. What makes the Smurfs more interesting than its counterparts is the fact that it also was intellectual, not just a shallow action adventure cartoon, so even grownups can have fun watching it.
If you ever get a chance to watch it, don't miss it.

I enjoy watching this cute and funny cartoon from the seasons 1-4(From the very first episode The Smurfette to Smurfily ever After) but when I saw the other five seasons 5-9 they totally ruined the show when it ''jumped the Shark''. Anyway I like all the characters like Smurfette, Clumsy, Papa Smurf, Hefty, Handy, Greedy, Vanity Jokey, Baby smurf( who appears first in Once in a blue moon) and including Brainy. my two all time favorites are Clumsy and Smurfette, they look so cute together in episodes like Three Smurketeers, My Smurfy Valentine, The Smurfic Games and Smurfily Ever After. I give it 7/10. Worth to see! But I suggest stick to first 4 seasons.

TheLittleSongbird1 May 2010I used to watch "Smurfs" every day as a kid, and at 18 I remember the show with such fondness. It is a real shame I haven't seen Smurfs on TV for such a long time, it was a cartoon classic. It had great animation with nice, clean colouring and well drawn characters, a catchy theme tune and clever background music, fun, gripping story lines that often taught something, strong writing and most of all unique and endearing characters. Who can forget Papa Smurf, Handy, Clumsy, Smurfette, Greedy, Smurfy, Vanity and Baby? And of course villainous Gargamel and his somewhat cute feline sidekick Azrael? These are great characters and are well voiced by the likes of June Foray, Don Messick, Frank Welker, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young and Lucille Bliss. Overall, a cartoon that I will always revere as a classic. 10/10 Bethany Cox

lflf99200127 September 2007I really enjoyed this cartoon for a while, but now I feel like I should stop watching it because of a few episodes that make me sad or stressed out and here's what they are:
Baby's First Christmas The Secret of Shadow Swamp Snappy's Way
Quite a few episodes of this cartoon have a smurf either being punished or doing bad things. This cartoon should not have Grouchy Smurf in it because no matter what anyone says to him, he'll always keep on saying the words "I hate." Moreover, he is the one who loves Baby Smurf more than any of the other smurfs? Now, that does not make any sense whatsoever. Grouchy should be banned from the village or forbidden to be with Baby Smurf until he changes his negative ways. I would watch this show if it didn't have episodes that I don't like. Moreover, in the last season where they traveled through time, there should have been an hour-long special in which they finally return to the village in their normal outfits. The only good part about the last season is that wherever they went, they wound up in the latest fashions. For example,in Rome, they wore togas just like the normal Romans do. There are a whole lot of episodes of this cartoon that I didn't see because I didn't know they existed until I started watching them on the USA Cartoon Express. I also want to see all the original intros of this show instead of the same old Smurfs Adventures opening over and over again. -
This was one of my favorite cartoons in the history of TV, I Watch it on NBC when I Was about the age of 4, I Still remember all of the smurfs and every episode, including the time traveling episodes which sadly jumped the shark, it's a shame that most cartoons of today (except for spongebob) aren't as good as the classics like these when I Was growning up and it's a shame that actors like don messick (who also voiced scooby doo and later papa smurf) passed on and others have either retired or died, but one thing remains the same, this show will remain a classic for even the next generation which sadly is lost.
The Smurfs is a cartoon classic and I Still have the first season. -
OllieSuave-00730 November 2016As a kid in the 80s, I would catch this cartoon show on TV after grade school. It was one of Hanna-Barbera's best-loved classics - a show about little blue creatures, each one named based on their individual unique personality, that live in mushroom houses in a forest. They lead seemingly peaceful lives but they occasionally have to avoid Gargomel and his cat, villains out to get them.
There are plenty of exciting adventures, whimsical and magical moments and good vs. evil elements - entertaining for kids and has that innocence touch to it - overall, a better cartoons than the ones dished out for kids nowadays.

Catherine_Grace_Zeh21 May 2014I used to watch this show when I was a little girl. When I think about it, I only remember it vaguely, though. If you ask me, it was a good show. Two things I also remember vaguely are the opening sequence and theme song. In addition, everyone was ideally cast. Also, the writing was very strong. The performances were top-grade, too. I hope some network brings it back so I can see every episode. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that I'll always remember this show in my memory forever, even though I don't think I've seen every episode. Now, in conclusion, if some network ever brings it back, I hope that you catch it one day before it goes off the air for good.

biuerboris9 November 2015This show is throughout horrible. The animation is cheap and when large groups of smurfs are shown, their animations are all the same and they are looped. The stories are filled up with errors, which cannot be ignored. I enjoy watching cartoons and i have seen a lot of boring ones, but this show makes me want to punch someone really hard. It is really hard to make a review that fulfills the requirements, because there's so little to say about this show. I know this show is old and used different methods for animation, but I have seen older cartoons, which these smurfs cannot live up to. At all.
If you this this I about the errors in the scripts, let's take an example. There is a episode, where some evil trolls, that turns to stone when the sun touches them, gives the smurfs a crystal ball, which would show you the best thing you could imagine. When you touched the ball, you would get teleported to the trolls cave and be made a slave.
A lot of smurfs get tricked,and touch it. They get sent to the cave, and the old smurf is really smart, so he sends the Suns rays though the crystal ball. Yay! But here are the mistakes:
The crystal ball do not transport the old surf, even though he looks in it and touches it. When he places the ball in the sun, it gets transported, but the ball is out in the sun most of the time, but the sun trick only works when it is placed in the sun by the old smurf. It doesn't make sense and it is disturbing. -
mattkratz15 December 2005I used to love The Smurfs when I was a kid. They were a true highlight. I've been hearing lots of stuff lately that they were socialists and all the stuff about stereotyping, but I think that's digging in a bit too deep. The show was obviously aimed at kids. What do kids care about such things? I didn't. I thought the Smurfs were cute and the episodes were all good. For some reason, I've never been able to get such episodes as "The Purple Smurfs" and "Forget-Me-Smurf" out of my mind. Those episodes made huge impact on me. I think every kid would be enchanted by these little blue creatures. I loved them.

pantbera11 August 2012I love The Smurfs. It's the best of all the HB cartoon shows excluding Tom & Jerry that I've ever watched and still is. I used to watch it back in the 80's when it was first brought out. I also collected some of the action figures back then. I got the entire DVD edition from Australia so that I can watch it again and again. I just love it. My most favourite smurf is Clumsy. I also like Smurfette and Wild as well as the little smurflings a lot. I like the episode of Smurfette Unmade where she changed back into her original evil non-smurf one-of-a-kind-thing self of no species, sent out to capture and kill her friends for Gargamel. The Smurfs show is the best! I have already started to collect a few of the original French written Smurf and Johan and Peewit (Les Schtroumpfs et Johan et Pirlouit) comic books from out of France. Even though the show's production was canceled long ago, the books still go on.

rustique14 July 2006It is surprising that there are no Belgian comments on this series. As a Belgian girl i grew up with these and there has never been anything that could remotely match this. Yes they were cute, adorable and their personalities just drew you into the stories. they had wonderful adventures but never the gooey type like the Carebears. Peyo, the creator of the comics and series did sometimes get his inspiration from current events. There is one book that deals with a language issue (should a blowpipe be called blowsmurf or smurfpipe?) that is a parody on the language issues that still exist in Belgium. But i can assure there was no antisemitism or KKK or even communist intentions. The coexisting was more an idea of peace and harmony than it was about communism. Yes, there are morals to the stories sometimes but they are never really the in you face kind of morals you find in current cartoons or Disney movies. it is the kind of show that never goes out of date. the comics are still being made although peyo has died and the quality of the stories is appalling. Stick to the original stuff, it's timeless.

I used to wake my lil sister up and we would clumsily poor ourselves whatever breakfast cereal mom would be able to get us that week and me and Angie would sit down to catch The Smurfs on our Saturday mornings...the smurfs was aired so damn early back then but as kids waiting all week for what used to be Saturday morning cartoons we didn't care...and the smurfs was one we had no problem waking up for!! As i now watch it as a grown man finding it in my store on DVD i am so surprised that outta all these reviews (which i'm surprised not more of with all us 80's kids out here) how the hell has none commented on the immense amount of adult innuendos involved within this series? Really guys? I am a frequent visitor of IMDb and i see people commenting on same type of things with other shows/film that I literally have to go back and look to find what it is the reviewers are talking about...The Smurfs however is a series that doesn't even try to hide it lol...albeit it is an absolutely amazing series back when morals mattered...and they were trying to teach us kids something good..I only now watching the series after all these years recognise the adult content slipped in...lol...that was probably only thrown in there from the creators as a nod to the hardcore parents that actually got up back then with there kids....course then again if that was the case why the hell were Saturday Morning Cartoons created in the 1st place? hahahaha!!!...Definitely check it out...I know its released on DVD...at least volume 1 and 2 of the first season....." ohhh I hate doing reviews" lol...(lil shout out to Cranky Smurf there)..:) Love ya sis..hope ya read this and remember those Saturday mornings...which I pretty sure u will...:)

ja_kitty_7129 August 2023I "smurf" the Smurfs, shall we say? The negativity I had heard on Keyframe.com shocked me. I thought the series was really good. My favorite smurf characters are Clumsy Smurf; he's funny; Smurfette (who doesn't love Smurfette); and Handy Smurf because, well, because I love Handy and Marina the mermaid, they're my favorite TV couple.
And after watching the TV show, I even read the original comics from Peyo, and now "The Smurfs" is one of my favorite European comics, along with René Goscinny's "Asterix the Gaul" from France. Overall, I really love the Smurfs; that is all I could say about this cartoon series, folks. -
penagosfernando5 July 2022I know that I already wrote my own review for this show but I think I had better write another one. I really couldn't stand this show because of Grouchy Smurf. All he ever said were the words, "I hate" whenever anyone mentioned anything. However, it's not his fault he's grouchy like this. I did read about what happened to him in the first Smurfs comic and how he remained a purple smurf for too long. The purple fly that bit him caused his mind to get too poisoned and his personality too damaged. That's how Grouchy became the grouchy smurf we all know today. I was really hoping that would have never happened to him. I guess since his mind is too poisoned and that his personality is too damaged, he just can't stop hating everything like this. I guess only Baby Smurf can warm his heart. I didn't think that a smurf who hates everything else would have such strong love for Baby Smurf. On the other hand, it's too bad that this show ended in a cliffhanger because of the ninth season where The Smurfs found themselves traveling through time. If they didn't lose the magic key that assembled the time crystals automatically back in prehistoric times, they would have been able to go back to their own time easily. The real baby smurf voiced by Julie Dees was absolutely cute and adorable. Although some websites said that it was never found out whether Baby was a boy or a girl smurf, one of the time travel episodes known as "NO REFLECTION ON VANITY" did have Papa Smurf saying that Baby was indeed a male smurf. Maybe there will be some episodes of this cartoon that I will watch again but only the good parts. Any forms of entertainment that have bad parts in them, I will be sure to avoid those because bad parts in anything happening either in real life or on TV completely stress me out. I especially can't stand seeing anyone being yelled at or abused on TV or in real life. That has happened to all of us in real life especially when we were all a lot younger. As I said before, words such as punishment, grounded, spank, reprimand, or even deletion are all words that are too strong for me to handle or even hear. Words like those completely stress me out and even scare me. I can't stand anyone who is either pure evil or even grouchy. I'm glad that one of my favorite voice actors named Michael Bell does the voices of Lazy Smurf, Handy Smurf, and Johan on this cartoon show but it's too bad he also does the voice of Grouchy Smurf. I think that in any episode in particular. Any or all of The Smurfs should have said that Grouchy is nothing more than an absolute disgrace to Smurfdom. Moreover, I think that the one punishment that should have been given to that sore smurf is the one thing I'm sure that no smurf would want to have and that is this: NO MORE TIME WITH BABY SMURF. Anyway, if I ever feel like watching this cartoon again, I will do so but only watch the good parts of any specific episode that I do enjoy.

Recently I read (or should I say "smurfed"?) one of the original Belgian comics, "L'Oeuf et les Schtroumpfs" ("The Smurfs and the Egg", where a giant egg begins to grant wishes), which also featured "Le Centième Schtroumpf" ("The 100th Smurf", where Vanity's mirror creates a new Smurf) and "Le Faux Sctroumpf" ("The False Smurf", where Gargamel disguises himself as a Smurf). And I enjoyed them all, despite the fact that they were in French (a language I studied in school)
And the cartoon is still a "smurfy" cartoon. Worthy of a smurf next time it comes on. -
I watched this 80s cartoon TV programme as younger and I thought it was very good and also funny. It is one of my favourite cartoons of all time.
I remember it was shown on the BBC about years ago.
I've heard it is based on a comic strip by a famous Belgian cartoonist Peyo (real name: Pierre Culliford).
The series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Production, most famous for The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Top Cat, Wacky Races and Yogi Bear. -
Dr_Death66617 May 2009Smurfs is a cute little show about little blue guys that live in their own little place. I thought this show would be corny, boring, animated cult TV show when I first saw advertisements about it in 1992, but when I actually watched it I loved it. It is cute, funny, and spawned some great Smurf merchandise (like the little-known Smurf Racer game for the PSOne) This is up there with ALF, The Chipmunks, and The A-Team as the greatest TV show of the 1980's. A funny show the whole family can enjoy. You should definitely watch this no matter what your age. This is one of the best TV shows ever.

qvmmq5 June 2023I recently started to go back to my roots and my new special interest is the smurfs. I re-watched all of the movies, and of course this series. I remember being a kid and owning multiple dvds and rewatching the same few episodes over and over again. This series brings so much joy to my life because its so whimsical and the characters are fun. Sure it has some flaws, but I love it nonetheless. When it comes to animation, the backgrounds are so beautiful but the animation of the smurfs themselves can be a bit weird and over lapping sometimes but what do you expect from a small series from the80s.

annmikayla11 July 2023One of my moms favorite childhood cartoons, I watch this show when I was 3, and it is very good and cute especially the Smurfs themselves, great characters such as Smurfette who is a caring and sweet young lady with a sassy attitude, Clumsy is a cute and lovable klutz of the village, Baby is cute and adorable as wel, the Smurflings are a great addition to the series to, especially Sassette, Papa Smurf is a great and caring leader to the Smurfs and does his best to keep the Smurfs out of trouble, all the episodes are good except for some episodes like Clumsy Luck, the show teaches kids lessons.

I see all the new stuff on Saturday mornings now, and just shutter to think that some parents allow their kids to watch. Smurfs had good story lines that taught respect and good values to our children. I wish they would make more toons like the Smurfs!
