A personal project for David Carradine playing a loner Vietnam veteran (is there any other kind these days?) who drifts into a quiet town, befriending a pretty flower-child and coming upon a dilapidated carousel on the city's outskirts. Carradine's obsession with the merry-go-round is steeped in the hypothetical, but we can appreciate his mysterious drive, as can Barbara Hershey as his girl (she was Carradine's real-life girl when much of the film was shot in 1973). It's a semi-remake (or retread) of Akira Kurosawa's "Ikiru" from 1952, and the troubled final result went through a number of title changes (I believe at one time it was called "Butterfly"). The cinematography is quite good, with deep reds and dusty browns, and Carradine's monosyllabic anti-hero--while familiar--is still quite interesting. ** from ****
