Raakhee had previously faced flak for her dress sense in the song Pyar zindagi hain in Muqadar Ka Sikander. During the making of Laawaris, filmaker Prakash Mehra, made sure that the dress Raakhee wore during the song Mere angne mein, suited her. This song was Alka Yagnik's first hit song.
An extra in the film Nellie ,(of Iranian descent),was rumored to be the reason Amitabh and Rekha had a break up/fight during Laawaris. Nellie was not the dancer in Apni To Jaise Taise as reported on many sites. Nilli full name was Naaz Bakhtiar. She was the niece of for Prime Minister of Iran,Shapour Bakhtiar. She was also the niece of actress Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiary.

Raakhee never agreed to do special appearances except for Dev Anand (Joshila, Here Panna, Lootmaar). In Laawaris she made a special concession for Prakash Mehra at the behest of Amitabh Bachchan who had helped give her career a second lease of life with Kabhi Kabhie.
Once in one of the outdoor shooting of the film one suddenly Prakash Mehra got ill, then his assistant Ram Sethi (pyarelal of muqadar ka sikander) took charge and shot all the scenes and a song for the film and completed the schedule. Later Prakash Mehra gave Ram Sethi a break to direct Ghungroo.

After Laawaris,Prakash Mehra was ready to start his film Zameen with boxing legend Mohammed Ali and Amitabh Bachchan,Zeenat Aman. But he got the scare of his life when he saw the climax of Kranti. All the scenes planned for Zameen were present in Kranti. This was due to writer Harbance Kumar stating he was inspired by the TV serial ROOTS. Salim Javed had also seen ROOTS and lifted several ideas from there and put them in Kranti. This upset Prakash Mehra because now he would have to rewrite major portion of his film. The film was eventually shelved for unknown reasons.
In the song Apni To Jaise Taise,the lyrics go "Aap mere jaise INSAAN KI AULAD hain". Prakash Mehra later launched a film titled "Insaan Ki Aulad". The film was to star Sanjeev Kumar and Kunal Goswami. It was later shelved.
After the release of Muqadar Ka Sikander, Prakash Mehra, with Amitabh Bachchan, had launched Kayaar and then Jadugaar. Both were shelved. Finally Lawaaris was made.

Prakash Mehra and Rakhee Gulzar had a major clash while making the film. Rakhee was required to come and shoot for her special appearance. But on the day of the shooting, she failed to report to the sets. This caused tension as Amjad Khan was busy in those days and matching his dates was next to impossible. When Prakash Mehra would call Rakhee's house, Rakhee's sister in law would come on the phone and make a excuse why Rakhee could not take the call. This made Prakash Mehra furious. He was ready to replace Rakhee, but the problem was he did not know which top heroine would agree to play Amitabh's mother (even though they would have no scenes together). Padmini Kapila tried for the role but Mehra told her he needed a star for the role. Finally Rakhee returned Prakash's call and told him her daughter Bosky was ill and that was the reason she did not come for the shoot. Mehra hesitantly took this excuse but also remembered that Rakhee had played this same game when they were shooting for Muqaddar Ka Sikander.
The film was a huge blockbuster surfacing as the year's 2nd highest grossing movie in 1981.
The only time Amitabh appeared on screen with Padmini Kapila. They did not have any scene's together in Shaan (1980).
Prakash Mehra stated "Namak Halal, my 1982 mega-release, has netted Rs 1 crore in Bombay and commands packed houses even now. Laawaris, made a year earlier, ran for a whole year in some theatres in Delhi as well as Bombay, earning Rs 70 lakh in the first 18 months (the industry's recognised time frame) in each of the territories."
Mere Angne Mein Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai (Male)..The music and lyrics of this song were adapted from a popular folk song of Uttar Pradesh. The song's lyrics were credited to Harivansh Rai Bachchan in the initial audio release of the film. However, when its folk origins came to be known, his name was removed from the credits in subsequent releases. This folk song was also adapted for a song in the film "Maze Le Lo" (1975). A few lines of the folk song were also sung in the film "Bombay Talkie" (1970) directed by James Ivory and produced by Ismail Merchant.
This film was remade in Telugu as "Naa Desam" (1982) starring N.T. Rama Rao, and in Tamil as "Panakkaran" (1990) starring Rajinikanth.
