The lives and work of the staff of St. Eligius Hospital, an old and disrespected Boston teaching hospital.
The orderly, Warren 'Cool' Coolidge, was also a character played by the same actor in The White Shadow (1978). In one episode we see him wearing his Carver High School varsity letter. In another episode, when an actor from "Shadow" played a different role, that actor was mistakenly referred to by his name from "Shadow". The actor corrected the "mistake" on camera.
Dr. Wayne Fiscus:
I have a hunch.
Dr. Mark Craig: So did Quasimodo.
Throughout the series, Dr. Daniel Auschlander suffers from late-stage Liver Cancer and yet he is seen repeatedly as drinking "very good" Scotch after hours with his staff in his office. Alcohol consumption only aggravates Liver Cancer and hastens death.
In the final season, St. Eligius has been bought by Ecumena. In several episodes of the final season, the following message appears during the end credits: "ECUMENA is a fictional company that does not represent any actual company or corporation."
The versions shown on Bravo cable network in the United States have many of the songs used throughout the series replaced with generic stock music, probably due to licensing issues.
