A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to his home world.
The gag where the mother looks in the closet and sees the alien surrounded by toys was dreamed up by Robert Zemeckis.
Michael: Oh, great.
Steve: So you got an arrow right in your chest.
When E.T. is typing on the toy, he presses the "E" button when we hear the toy say "F" in the spelling "S-W-V-U-A-F-P"
In the 2002 special edition release, the movie opens with a sillouette of E.T. in basket with Elliot on bike flying in front of the Universal logo.
