A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to his home world.
Dee Wallace says that fans of the movie at conventions she goes to, always refer to her as "E.T.s mom" or "The mother from E.T."
Michael: Oh, great.
Steve: So you got an arrow right in your chest.
When E.T. is alone in the house and misspells "nuisance" on the toy, we see that the back panel has been removed, but in the next shot the panel is back on. Later, when E.T. drags the blanket with the "phone" ingredients on it, the panel is back off.
At the very end of the credits for the 2002 edition, the classic "When in Hollywood, visit Universal Studios" advertisement from the early 1980's is still retained.
