A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to his home world.
In the Halloween scene where E.T. sees a child in a Yoda costume and seems to recognize him suggest that they are from the same Galaxy. In Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), in the galactic senate scene where all the senators are on their feet shouting, you can see in the lower right corner E.T. species among the senate pods.
Michael: Oh, great.
Steve: So you got an arrow right in your chest.
[20th Anniversary edition] When E.T. is eating potato salad and drinking beer in front of the refrigerator during the scene when he is alone at home, the shadow of his head cast on the fridge door is that of the original puppet, not the CGI head.
At the very end of the credits for the 2002 edition, the classic "When in Hollywood, visit Universal Studios" advertisement from the early 1980's is still retained.
In the original VHS copy of the movie (the classic black and green plastic) as well as television broadcasts, the now infamous terrorist line was simply supplanted with "You can't get dressed up like THAT" and not the terrorist line OR the hippie line of the 20th anniversary edition.
