1982 was a good year for Bachcan because he gave hit after hit despite giving a couple of flops like Desh Premee. Khudaar was one of his big hits from 1982 and this was the time when Amitabh Bachchan was the Numero Uno of Bollywood. His film would be hits and like 1982, 1981 was also a year that saw 6 Bachchan films that were hits.

Khudaar is one of Bachchan's good films and it has many light hearted comic scenes that make it a marvelous watch. The film tells the story of 3 brothers and how the eldest brother's wife gets rid of the two brothers. Govind and Raja grow up in some other place. While Govind becomes a taxi driver, Raja goes some place else to study and become successful. Govind is happy to see Raja working hard but he doesn't know that Raja is not interested in education, he is more interested in doing useless things and wasting time. When Govind comes to know this, he feels bad. Govind gets trapped for murdering someone he never did murder and it is there he meets his long lost step brother. His brother comes to know who he is and his brother saves him from getting sentenced. Govind finds the real culprit and the real culprit get's sentenced.

The movie may sound typical but it is well handled and superbly narrated. There aren't that many action sequences but they do add the fun to the film. The film only drags after the part when Amitabh comes to know what Vinod Mehra is up to. The melodrama and the on going portions over there could've been better handled but the film doesn't loose it's impact because of the well handled court scenes and the superb climax.

Direction by Ravi Tandon is good, he gives Amitabh one of his best films from the early 80s. Tandon handles several scenes superbly and the comedy scenes are a delight to watch. He is only let down by the script in the post interval portions but not for long.

Amitabh Bachchan is superb and he does wonderful as Govinda aka Chotu Ustad. His scenes with the taxi, his scenes with the heroine, and his scenes with his brother all are well handled. His expressions as usual are wonderful. Even his crying is natural, it doesn't look fake or made up. Vinod Mehra is good in his part though he does overact in parts but this is one of his good performances. Parveen Babi is beautiful and she contributes to some light moments with Bachchan. Her comedy with Bachchan is good and their chemistry is amazing. Sanjeev Kumar in one of his few films with Bachchan is good, he was always a natural actor. Prem Chopra is the typical villain but he does a good job as usual. The rest provide good support.

Music is good, Mach Gaya Shor Saari is an amazing song and the Matki festival is also superbly shown. Angrezzi Mein Kehte Hai is a good song and the situation represented by the song is funny. The other songs are good as well.

On the whole, Khudaar is one of Bachchan's good films from the early 80s. The film has everything from comedy to action and the film is a delight to watch. If you want to watch Bachchan in one of his best films, this is a recommendation.
  • So, another lost-and-found story starring Bachchan but much better done. Amitabh Bachchan stars as the principled taxi driver who takes care of his younger brother's future. The two of them left their home when they were kids as their vicious sister in-law was mistreating them while their older brother was away. A typical story, indeed, but the development is really very good. Bachchan does a very good job in a role that camr shortly before he started looking too old for the parts he subsequently played. Here he is real and funny and very believable. His leading lady, Parveen Babi, is beautiful and very funny as the beautiful Mary who moves from scoundrel to warm and caring companion. Vinod Mehra is good as the brother but less convincing playing the negative shades of his part as he still gives this vibe of being too decent. Prem Chopra is well cast as the villain, and so is Mehmood who plays his regular comic part with great flair. Then you have Sanjeev Kumar who really was always in his element and this film is no exception. While Khu-Daar has its moments where it doesn't really seem to be going anywhere, it is totally redeemed in its last portions, where it turns into a captivating courtroom drama, which is tense and really well written (assuming it's original). Kudos to the writers for handling this part so well. And kudos to the music director for nicely composed songs. "Disco '82" is a classic and my favourite. Really a nice film, entertaining.
  • During his heyday, Amitabh Bachchan was so much popular with so much positive energy flowing in and spreading out of his personality that he was able to pull the movies on the box office all alone, demonstrating himself as bigger than several other aspects of the movie including the story, thus gaining the title of Big B. For many such movies made during a decade spanning from the mid seventies to the mid eighties, he was one man army, capable of winning the battle of the box office on his own. One such movie starring him is Khuddar (1982).

Khuddar (a man of self-respect) is the story of three brothers the eldest of whom is Hari (Sanjeev Kumar) who loves his motherless younger brothers very much but his wife Seema (Tanuja) does not like them and therefore, does not want them to live in her house. When Hari moves out for some time to study law, she expels both of them from the house. Now these two hapless and resourceless lads have to struggle to survive in this cruel world.

The elder of the two grows up as Govind (Amitabh Bachchan) who is fondly called as Chhotu Ustaad by all and sundry (very few people know his real name) and Rajesh (Vinod Mehra) fondly called as Raaja. Now Govind aka Chhotu Ustaad makes it the aim of his life to enable Rajesh aka Raaja to climb the heights of success and prosperity in his life. He works hard as a taxi driver to earn enough money for this purpose, cherishing his dream to see his younger brother to become big in his life. But ! But Raesh gets spoiled due to bad company. And a baddie Bansi (Prem Chopra) takes advantage of this spoilage of his. Though Rajesh is able to get married to Manju (Bindiya Goswaami), the daughter of a rich businessman Mr. Varma (Pinchoo Kapoor), he leaves his brother's house and moves to his in-laws' place. Now Govind is heartbroken only to find some solace from the family of Rahim Chacha (A.K. Hangal) who has stood by him and Raesh since their childhood days and Mary (Parveen Baabi), the love of his life.

As destiny has its own way, one day Mr. Varma, the father-in-law of Rajesh is murdered and Govind is arrested for this murder. When he is brought in the court for the trial, both himself and the person sitting on the chair of the judge are startled like anything to see each other. Why ? Because the judge is none else but Hari only, the elder brother of Govind and Rajesh. Needless to say that Hari resigns from his post of the judge to act as the defense counsel of his younger brother and finally succeeds in unmasking the real culprit and getting Govind exonerated after the courtroom drama.

The biggest USP and the biggest ingredient of the entertainment embedded in this movie is Amitabh Bachchan only. Though the movie features stars like Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja, Parveen Baabi, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswaami etc., finally it's AB only who turns this ordinary script into an extra-ordinarily movie which none can regret after watching. AB has shown every colour of his acting talent in this movie - comedy, emotion, action and what not ! His comic timing is so perfect that even the seasoned comedians may be envious of that. Despite getting able support from all others, he has carried the entire movie on his shoulders. The title is meant for his character only and he only is the heart and soul of this movie. I doubt whether any other hero would have been able to do justice to the role of Govind aka Chhotu Ustaad which appears to be tailor-made for Big B.

Rajesh Roshan has prepared very good music for Khuddar whose songs are very popular even today. Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain Ki I Love You, Mach Gaya Shor Saari Nagari Re, Hatt Ja Baajoo Nahin To Uda Doonga, Disco 82 etc. are fondly listened to and hummed by the music lovers of today's generation also. Disco 82 was prepared keeping in view the year of release of this movie, i.e., 1982 but it thrills and moves the listener's feet even in 2014. In addition to the songs mentioned supra, the album contains one inspiring song - Oonche Neeche Raaste Aur Manzil Teri Door as well as one emotional song - Maa Ka Pyar, Behan Ka Pyar also.

Technically the movie is perfect in all the respects and despite its excessive length, the editing job has been done so skilfully that the grip of the narrative on the audience is seldom loosened. Despite the predictability of the story, the viewer keeps on watching and enjoying the happenings on the screen without burdening his mind. There is no song which irritates by appearing in-between because it becomes a part of the smooth flow of the story only.

Khuddar was a commercial success and rightly so because it's like a spicy dish with no spice being high or low than required in quantum. The mix of the regular entertainment formulae is the optimum here and there is a balance in all the aspects of the story. I advise all the movie buffs to watch it without any prejudice and allow themselves to be entertained by the one and only Amitabh Bachchan.
  • This is just like most of Amitabh's movies, a little bit of everything, there was romance, action, drama, comedy and it was simply wonderful. It's so good to watch a character as humble and simple and giving as Chotu Ustaad. The music was wonderful and not to mention the famous I LOVE YOU song which is still something on our Radio Station. Old is gold, believe it!

    Review By Kamal K

In early 1980's all Amitabh Bachchan movies were successful, many if them were Super Successful even with a poor script. Khud-daar was one movie which did Superb business. Thanks to good songs, excellent music and memorable performances by all actors specially by Sanjeev Kumar. Amitabh-Parveen Babi pair was Best and Super Successful.
  • Khud-Daar is an action drama film directed by Late Ravi Tandon. The film stars Late Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Late Parveen Babi, Late Vinod Mehra, Prem Chopra, Bindiya Goswami with Late Mehmood and Tanuja in extended cameos.

This film can be best describe as a cocktail of everything that was prevalent in late 70s and early 80s, with lost and found plot mixed with comedy, action, self redemption of the wrong ones and happy union. The film has nothing new or exciting to offer but the film was still successful mainly because of the super stardom of Amitabh Bachchan, the ensemble star-cast and melodious songs.

The plot of the film and it's execution is predictable and average, as mentioned above we have seen such plots in many 70s and 80s films. Screenplay of the film is purely predictable, plain and doesn't excites much.

Acting is good and all the actors were great in their part with special mention for Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. Climax of the film was also predictable and gives a happy ending.

A must watch for Amitabh Bachchan fans and for others can watch once for the melodious songs.

This movie of Amitabh's is undoubtely one of his classics though it is not as famous as other Bachchan classics as Deewaar, Trishul, Kabhi Kabhie, Sholay, Shaan, Shakti, Satte pe Satta, Kasme Vaade or others. This is unfortunate cause the movie is very good. Produced by Mehmood's brother Anwar Ali and directed by Lekh Tandon with a classic score by Rajesh Roshan this movie has songs by Kishore Kumar, Lata, Amit Kumar. All the songs are classics like Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain Ke I Love You, Mach Gaya Shor, Disco 82, Oonche Neeche Raaste, Hatja Baju and Maa Ka Pyar (not in the movie). The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja, Parveen babi, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Prem Chopra, Ramesh Deo, Mehmood, AK Hangal and others. The story revolves around 3 brothers played by Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh and Vinod. Sanjeeb is the older brother who dotes on his 2 young stepbrothers. When he marries Tanuja she gets jealous of their bond and the 2 younger brothers run away from home. Amitabh sacrifies everything to get Vinod an education and it seems that everything will turn out right. Then Vinod gets to know rich girl Bindiya Goswami and Amitabh's world falls apart when his brother chooses money over him. Amitabh also meets his older brother by now who is a judge but Sanjeev doesn't recognise him though there is a friendship between the 2 older brothers. Watch when a murder is committed, Amitabh is arrested and tried in court where Sanjeev is the judge. All the performances are first rate. Vinod, Bindiya, AK Hangal. But the movie belongs to Sanjeev Kumar (though in a supportung role) and Amitabh, the main character. These movies don't get made anymore. Amitabh can make you laugh by just saying " yes" (in the Can You Tell Me What Time It Is -scene" and he can make you cry with his taxi. A great film you must watch!

1980s were a good period for Bachchan when most of his films did well, in 1982 he had 6 releases amongst which 3 did well Khuddhar was a film Amitabh did as a favour apparently for Mehmood's brother and strangely his own brother Mehmood charged him his market price.

The film is a emotional film with a good story(written by Kader Khan) with some coincidences and cinematic liberties also Yet the film is a good watchable fare The film is quite long but keeps you entertained There are flaws like in the climax Prem Chopra having a gun in the court and several other coincidences

Direction by Ravi Tandon is good with a few flaws Music by Rajesh Roshan was a huge hit, all songs sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Many songs became a huge hit

Amitabh is brilliant as Chotu Ustad and goes through all the shades of the character well Parveen Babi in perhaps her last successful film with Amitabh is good in her role Vinod Mehra is good in his role which has grey shades Prem Chopra is as usual as the villain Sanjeev Kumar is good in his short role Tanuja doesn't get much scope but does ok Mehmood is wasted Bindiya Goswami is also good in her role AK Hangal is also delightful.

Overall the film is watchable and one of Amitabh's hits in 1980s.

Hari is forced to marry Seema, who dislikes his stepbrothers, Govind and Rajesh. When he goes to Mumbai, she displaces them to become beggars. However, destiny reunites them with Hari in a courtroom.

A lesser known Bachchan entry when compared to Deewar, Sholay etc., but not any less entertaining than the ones released in his heyday. Between 1974 and 1983 Amitabh was a force to reckon, and was setting the box office on fire with his fabulous screen presence, superb dialogue and style, and he does the same here in this entertaining film that has a winning formula of an engaging story, good songs, fights, comedy and intrigue in the courtroom. The other cast members do fine as well, so does Basanti the taxi car!

.. That was the truth and nothing but the truth at the time for us in Egypt. Actually it was rather like: Indian Movie = Amitabh Bachchan. Otherwise it's not Indian! I believe that between the mid-70s and the mid-80s, the big B didn't make what you can call a bad movie. So, if the movie didn't have Bachchan, then why to watch it?! It means good work naturally. To unload your emotions, free your tears, live the heroism, and the most of all give a rest to your brain. But when it comes to (Khud-Daar), my brain wants to commit the biggest crime and thinks about it..

Why (Prem Chopra) frames (Bachchan)?, to shut him up, so he would never talk about the smuggling business which his own brother got himself into it? But Bachchan never talked with anybody about that? Let alone that framing him doesn't shut him up, so why not to kill him instead?, and originally how his brother got away with it at the end? We all saw him coming to meet his big brother on the prison's gate while (Chopra) must've confessed?? They forgot all about that? Even the brutal murders of the kind neighbor, so his son, no one on earth bothered themselves to investigate them?

Minor stuff: How (Bachchan) managed to beat the 7 huge guys who the evil one sent them on the request of (Parveen Babi)?, How (Babi) herself became away of the crime life as simple as that, just because someone was about to rape her?, why the rich father-in-law approved to marry his daughter to a poor unemployed young man who has no respectable degree; OHH, "he's poor so we can control him right" as the secretary persuaded the father brilliantly! And (Chopra) goes to the court with the same watch that he left before at the crime scene; he must love this watch so much!

Coincidences: (Bachchan) comes in the same time that (Parveen Babi) was about to be raped. (Bachchan) transports someone to see (Babi) works hard as a worker righteously. (Bachchan) transports (Chopra) and then the last forgot something, so the honorable driver returns to him to see his older brother after years of separation. The case of (Bachchan) took place in the very first day that this same brother became a judge!

Sorry, I seem too boring, even for myself. But these were few points just to feel the shaky ground that this movie was built on. The thing about some Indian movies that they can sometimes convince you with the impossible, through certain way of amazing amusement, and a thin plot that gathers too many story lines somehow cleverly. Though here, it's not a (Manmohan Desai) movie. It's plain story yet you have to feel that nearly everything was forced. The whole status pushes you to sense how trite. As you see, it wasn't good enough to a degree that allowed me to "think". So, unlike many movies, it provoked a bit more than making enjoyment. I remember the scene where (Bachchan) went to some bar to fight with some thugs, I was saying: "Oh, he didn't beat up somebody since half an hour!". So, the movie was trying to provide goods, but not in harmonious or satisfying formula.

Another disappointment, the large cast. (Sanjeev Kumar), (Amitabh Bachchan), (Parveen Babi), (Prem Chopra), (Mehmood) OH MY GOD, the movie didn't utilize their gifts inasmuch as their presence. Their roles weren't as big as them. (Kumar) was always great, but he was aggrieved in such a poor role. (Babi) got nothing to add, (Mehmood) as the small crook didn't make anything funny or impressive. What was written for them was too laconic to the extent that some of them looked near to cameos!

I hated the idiot and hasty dialogue. The Indian movies accustomed us with deep sharp lines, but sorrowfully not here. Although many situations were sentimental, but no efforts were made to give them the ingenuity or the warm effect they demanded. It was flat to the utmost; the younger brother says stuff like: "The ones who start as poor stay as poor!", then when his honest brother blames him later, he repeats it again: totally naive!

It's not a bad movie. It's mediocre fun comparing to (Bachchan) movies at that era, or let's say: his era. And despite anything, it got the flavors of its stars even if lightly. Surely (Bachchan) is the highest point of this movie, being highly charismatic with solid performance as usual, dealing with the role smartly, he was that humble, gallant who ready to sacrifice himself for the ones he loves.

The best moments of this movie, in so many ways, were without a doubt the 2 scenes where (Bachchan) was dealing with his beloved old car. It was so touching and unique to watch him selling it against his well to cling to him desperately, or smashing it in rage to go to it after to apologize. These are some things to live long people! Add to them the hilarious theater scene, and the car chase at the end.

Anyway, it's not one of the giant hits. It's the regular (Bachchan) movie at the time. By the way, in 1982 he made 6 movies, (Shakti) could be their most memorable one for the critics. (Khud-Daar) is watchable though. Still a fans' classic. So it's not the case of "The big B in small movie", it's the case of "a movie with the big B, when he was bigger than life".
