In previous articles, we have taken a look at stars of the past we would like to see make a comeback – and there are a lot of them! It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

It’s a sad tale of a promising career being kneecapped by bad luck… actually, by a bad movie. Playing the character Swan in the 1979 classic The Warriors, Michael Beck proved he had what it took to be a badass leading man. It looked like his career would be soaring onward and upward from there. But his momentum came to a screeching halt the following year when he had the misfortune of...

Plot: A deep dive into all the great movies that came out in 1982.
Review: Everyone has their own take on the greatest year ever for cinema. Scholars tend to cite 1939, as that’s the year Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Gunga Din, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and several other seminal classics came out. Modern film fans tend to cite 1999, thanks to The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia and many more. I’d make a strong case for 2007 myself, with Into the Wild, The Assassination of Jesse James, Gone Baby Gone, Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and others. But, if you’re a movie geek, one year stands above them all, and it’s 1982.
Think about it. E.T., The Thing, Star Trek II, Rocky III, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, the list goes on and on. And now, 1982 is getting a...

The lineup for the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con has been unveiled, giving attendees – and those refreshing their browsers the entire weekend – a little less to look forward to but still plenty of panels, reveals and anniversary spotlights. The 2023 Comic-Con is a far more limited affair this year due to major players like Marvel, Sony, Universal, Disney, and more dropping out at least partly due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. And with deadlines on the potential Screen Actors Guild strike quickly approaching, could only harm the event even more.
Here are some of the highlights of the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con:
Thursday, July 20th:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – “Paramount Pictures brings a panel discussion and footage presentation with filmmakers.”
Project K – “From the heartland of India emerges a unique tale that intertwines ancient mythology with cutting-edge science fiction, all within the captivating Spice Punk aesthetic. Welcome to Project K,...

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, The Thing, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan…
These are just a few of the genre classics that made their theatrical debut within months of each other in 1982! It’s widely considered the summer that shaped modern geek culture, and if anyone knows what it means to be a defining voice of that generation – it’s the great Mark A. Altman. The former boss of the iconic Sci-Fi Universe Magazine, the writer and producer of Free Enterprise, the showrunner of The CW’s Pandora and the best-selling author of definitive Star Trek and James Bond oral histories, Altman is perhaps the authority on all things genre. Indeed, his upcoming documentary 1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever is shaping up to be his Magnum Opus.

I see lots of talk about Grease as we mourn the loss of Olivia-Newton John, but let’s not forget the real crowning achievement of her career…
Xanadu (1980)
Director: Robert Greenwald
Stars: Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck
Is There A Plot?
A muse from the heavens comes to Earth to better our world by… [checks notes]… helping a struggling artist and an elderly rich man achieve their newfound dream of opening up a roller disco.
What’S The Damage?
Xanadu is a legendary bad movie for many reasons. Razzies creator John J. B. Wilson hated it so much that it led him to invent an official award show to celebrate the worst films of the year. It also has the designation of being screen legend Gene Kelly’s final film before his death, a rainbow-colored pimple on the ass of a renowned career. But, perhaps worst of all, Xanadu’s critical...

Power Rangers is a legacy, joining a very small list of shows that run for such a long period of time, over 28 years! Throughout that time, the series has had its ups, its downs, and its mehs. I’ve been watching since the ripe age of 2 and have always loved the series, even in some of its more questionable moments.
But where does each season rank? With so many entries which ones stand as the best of the best of the best or which one and is a super mega dud? After a rewatch of all the seasons I ranked them all from worst to best with a little explanation of why they ended up where they did.
Quick note: I’m not including the “Mmpr Reversioning” as a season. It’s just a few Photoshop effects over a smattering of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 episodes, and it’s nothing to write home about.

With the Oscars (mercifully) behind us, it’s time to start worrying again about the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. That much-postponed institution is now scheduled to open with a gilt-edged gala honoring Sophia Loren and Haile Gerima, and sponsored by Rolex, on September 25, with a public opening five days later.
So here’s an idea the museum’s keepers can have for the price of a Wolfgang Puck sushi cone: Let the fans in first.
Seriously.
After years of delay, the film Academy’s museum should actually arrive at a fortuitous moment, just as the lockdown-weary audience is getting comfortable with theaters again. Last weekend’s strong box office performance points toward normalization. Barring a Covid-surge, all four quadrants should be back in the ticket line by September.

Kelly Mi Li and Andrew Gray have finally accepted that they're probably better off as friends. On Tuesday, March 9, the Bling Empire star shared to Instagram that she and the Power Ranger Megaforce actor "have made the difficult decision to officially separate at this point in our lives." "Over the past 5 and [a] half years, Andrew and I have shared some incredible times together. I have a tremendous amount of respect and love for him and will always cherish the memories we made," she wrote. "We are both so grateful to have experienced a relationship that allowed us to grow and learn so much." Kelly added that she and Andrew "plan to continue working on...

Are Bling Empire's Kelly Mi Li and Andrew Gray still together? On Monday, Jan. 25, Netflix dropped a "Where Are They Now" video about the cast of their latest reality hit. The just-released video covered a variety of topics, including an update on Kelly and Andrew's on-again, off-again relationship. Fans of the show have criticized the couple's relationship as toxic due to the troubling fights documented. As breakout star Anna Shay put it best, "There ain't no dick that good." Although the pair briefly broke up in season one, the finale teased a reunion between the Organic Media Group co-founder and the Power Rangers Megaforce actor. So, are Kelly and Andrew still an...

In the early 1980s, Cinefantastique was an extraordinarily detailed and authoritative sci-fi film magazine. Founded as a mimeographed fanzine a year before the 1968 release of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” it became a serious, almost scholarly glossy. And in 1982, Cinefantastique opened the year with a double issue that featured “Blade Runner,” Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”
Looking back, Cinefantastique was right to recognize “Blade Runner;” its impact is still felt nearly 40 years later. However, in 1982 the $65 million production grossed just $41 million worldwide as one sci-fi title among many. June 11 saw the release of Steven Spielberg’s instant classic “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial;” June 4 was “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” Those far less complex, more audience-friendly titles had already grossed over $125 million (this and all grosses here adjusted to 2020 values).
June 25 also saw the debut of “The Thing,” John Carpenter’s remake of the 1951 classic,...

Power Rangers Beast Morphers Episode 10
For a franchise that sometimes utilizes comedic side characters, Power Rangers doesn’t do overly comedic episodes as often as you think. This is assuming you don’t think Every episode of Power Rangers is hilarious by the sheer nature of its very concept, but if you’re reading this review you probably don’t chuckle at spandex wearing heroes or the hilarious amount of quick zooms in every episode of the show. Not that my co-worker laughed about those things as I watched an episode of Megaforce recently. Anyway, where was I?
Power Rangers and comedy. Since the very nature of the show can be seen as campy, Power Rangers doesn’t delve into overt comedy too often.

Preparations for Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged appearance in November 1993 were reportedly tense, but that’s not how easygoing Meat Puppets songwriter and frontman Curt Kirkwood remembers it. One of his fondest memories, in fact, is of joking with Kurt Cobain just before the now-legendary performance.
“We were walking down towards the playing area, and [I was] telling Kurt that I liked to eat the gum off the bottoms of tables when I was a little kid,” Kirkwood laughs, recalling the absurdity.

Wizard World Comic Con visited Portland, Oregon last weekend and they provided me an opportunity to attend. The experience had it’s good points and it’s bad which I will get into.
Batman-Kevin Conroy
To start, it was much smaller an affair than I anticipated. I think back to Rose City Comic Con back in September, which utilized the entire Oregon Convention Center with the main hall and numerous meeting rooms for the various panels. Wizard World used the main hall as well as two sets of meeting rooms which made the event feel smaller. That’s not a bad thing in and of itself, just an observation.
The line to get into the convention hall was long. The biggest problem I had with it was that the Wizard World staff utilized only one set of doors for the entrance. Everyone had to be scanned with a...

Before he received acclaim as a writer/director of such films as Brother from Another Planet (’84), Matewan (’87), and The Secret of Roan Inish (’94), John Sayles made a splash on the horror scene as the writer of fun, clever satires such as Piranha (’78) and The Howling (’81). However, he did another that doesn’t get nearly as much love, and that’s his ode to an overgrown reptile, Lewis Teague’s Alligator (’80). Which is a shame, as it is just as much of a blast as the other two.
Alligator was released in July to solid reviews, and tripled its budget in returns, bringing in $6.5 million U.S. Not too bad for an independent (Group 1 International Distribution Organisation Ltd., the fine folks behind Ufo’s Are Real), and a good indicator that horror fans are always up for a smart romp. Alligator glides through that sweet swamp filled with fear and good humor.

Presenting our complete ranking of all 25 completed seasons of Power Rangers!
Power Rangers is a legacy, one of the few shows to run almost non-stop since its inception in 1993. Throughout those now 25 years, the series has had its ups, its downs, and its mehs. I’ve been watching since the ripe age of 2 and loved the series even through its more questionable years.
However, sometimes nostalgia and memory play tricks on us, so I completed a rewatch of the series, thanks to Netflix. In that rewatch I realized some series were better than I remember, some worse, and some still didn’t make much of an impression. After viewing all the seasons I ranked them all from worst to best with a little explanation of why.

In this installment of Junkfood Cinema, Cargill and I discuss one of our favorite under-appreciated actors: Michael Beck. For a very brief period of time, Beck was a rising star in Hollywood. His breakout performance in The Warriors placed him firmly on the map, only to see his career stall a mere three years later thanks to the notorious bomb that was Xanadu. Still, during his all-too-short heyday, Beck appeared in some fantastic cult fare including Hal Needham’s Megaforce and the often heralded (at least on this show) Battletruck. From the decades big blockbusters to the direct-to-vhs dross that clogged video store shelves I loves me some 80s flicks. So when two of the decades most infamous flicks get re-released on DVD I just knew I had to check them out… First up, Megaforce!

Hollywood stuntman and film director who scored huge successes with Smokey and the Bandit and The Cannonball Run
Upset by the critical response to his work, the stuntman turned film director Hal Needham, who has died aged 82, took out advertisements in Variety and other trade papers. They featured quotes from negative reviews for his movies including Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and The Cannonball Run (1981), alongside a wheelbarrow overflowing with dollar bills.
Needham made a point. His rumbustious 1977 directorial debut had grossed over $100m – an enormous return on its modest budget. He was still milking that particular creation some 20 years later, producing and directing a series of television movies, including Bandit Goes Country and Beauty and the Bandit.
These and other films, many of which starred Burt Reynolds, were seen by an audience of hundreds of millions worldwide, yet few reference books acknowledged his 45-year-long career — an unjustified omission, if only...

Memphis-born Hal Needham revolutionized the art of the stuntman in films such as How The West Was Won, Stagecoach (1966), Hellfighters, Little Big Man, and hundreds of TV shows. He was a regular stunt double for Burt Reynolds and began his movie directing career with Burt as his lead in Smokey And The Bandit, the second highest-grossing film of 1977 next to Star Wars. He would direct Reynolds in four more films including Stroker Ace, Cannonball Run, and Hooper, which was not a tribute to just stuntmen in general, but to Needham’s hero Jock Mahoney , considered the greatest stuntman in Hollywood (and the stepfather of Hooper co-star Sally Field). Needham’s Megaforce (1982) is an ‘80s time capsule kitsch masterpiece and the delirious The Villain...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for the first two weeks of September.
Mother's Day (1980) Anchor Bay Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
Though the company had yet to be formed, Mother’s Day was the first unofficial Troma film. Written and directed by Charles Kaufman (Loyd’s brother), it’s a violent, cheapjack revenge film with several of the patented Troma ingredients already in place. Uneasy comedic elements, amateur performances, sketchy scripting and aggressive misogyny abound. In spite of all this, Mother’s Day is also a fairly engrossing little exploitation film that seems to get better with age. Featuring the late, great Beatrice Pons as Mother Rose.
Special Features Include:
* Feature Length Audio Commentary with director Charles Kaufman and assistant art director Rex Piano
* Behind the Scenes of the Original Mother’s Day: includes Super 8 footage of screen tests and special effects (with Charles Kaufman commentary)
*Original trailer
* "Ike,...

The folks at JEFusion.com shared footage from this year’s Power Morphicon of Saban Entertainment’s promo reel for next year’s Power Rangers series. Their seventeenth series, Power Rangers Megaforce, will be based on the thirty-fourth of Toei Company’s Super Sentai series, Tensou Sentai Goseiger.
Starting with the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in 1993, based on Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, Saban has been producing series using costumes, props and action footage from the Japanese originals. The series have remained a perennial hit in the States, as the original series has done in Japan for the past thirty-six years.
It’s not the first time the name has appeared in entertainment either. One of the original sentai series had “mega” in the title; Denji Sentai Megaranger, which was used to create 1998′s Power Rangers in Space. Action film fans may remember the Hal Needham directed MegaForce, starring Barry Bostwick and Persis Khambatta.

I played the video game tie-in for director Hal Needham’s 1982 cheese classic “Megaforce” long before I saw the actual movie. My short-lived obsession with my beloved Atari 2600 cartridge in no way prepared me for the experience, which, I might add, makes about as much sense as the game. None of that matters, of course, because the film stars Barry Bostwick as a freaking badass named Ace Hunter. Plus, there are explosions, and flying motorcycles. You need this DVD, otherwise your life will not have purpose. That statement is not endorsed by either Hen’s Tooth Home Video or Beyond Hollywood, by the way. I thought that might be worth noting. If you need a synopsis, you’re not my friend: The peace-loving Republic of Sardun is facing constant incursions from hostile neighbor Gamibia. Unwilling to retaliate and initiate war, high-ranking Sardunian military officials Major Zara and General Byrne-White arrange a rendezvous with MegaForce,...

Attention Los Angeles area readers! If silver lame' jumpsuits, rocket launching motorcycles, and fighting for justice and freedom are your thing, then get down to The New Beverly Cinemas this Saturday, June 23, at 7:30 pm, and join in celebrating the 30'th anniversary of the camp classic Megaforce.Patriotism, weapons gadgetry, and coiffed hair collide in this cartoony action flick from stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham (Smokey And The Bandit, The Cannonball Run) and starring the naturally hilarious Barry Bostwick, who does his best to jut out his chin and flex his muscles, even though he looks more like "Let's Get Physical" era Olivia Newton-John than he does G.I. Joe. Along with showing a rare 35mm print, Hal Needham himself will be on hand to answer questions...

Junk Food Dinner bowls a strike this week as we take a look at three (3) films suggested by listeners.
First up, we take a look at 1982's "Megaforce," the story of Ace Hunter (Barry Bostwick) and his quest to defeat evil and ride flying motorcycles in front of green screens while wearing a headband.
Then our bodies get taken over by a murdered gangster while we watch "Retribution" from 1987. This horror flick is full of gore, glowing green eyes and the best midget cameo we've seen since last week.
Finally we watch Ryan Nicholson's '80s slasher homage, "Gutterballs," 2008's most notable bowling/rape fusion.
Direct Download.

If the exclamation point doesn’t set the tone enough, the subtitle should seal the deal for Hal Needham’s Stuntman! My Car-Crashing, Plane-Jumping, Bone-Breaking, Death-Defying Hollywood Life. Anyone expecting an introspective, sober recounting of the highs and lows of rising to prominence in the movie industry is going to walk away disappointed. Needham, world-class stuntman and director of Smokey And The Bandit, The Cannonball Run, and Megaforce, has never been much for introspection. His autobiography is a slam-bang, whiz-pow, golly-gee ride from one crazy anecdote to the next; there’s barely enough time for other people, let alone anything ...

Hope and Redemption: The Lena Baker Story tells a devastating tale and serves as an interesting footnote in legal history. The film recounts the true story of Lena Baker, who became the first and only woman to be sentenced to death by electric chair in the state of Georgia. The movie chronicles her life starting as a young girl in rural Georgia at the turn of the 20th century. Later in life, she meets Elliot Arthur a tyrant of a man whom she comes to work for. Their relationship is complicated and often brutal, with Arthur kidnapping Baker on several occasions, keeping her from his family. During one encounter in an attempt to free herself, Baker ends up killing Arthur, setting off the trial and string of events that would eventually lead to her death sentence.

I'm not sure what Herman Melville would think if he were alive today and saw the trailer for The Asylum's 2010: Moby Dick. He'd probably be more upset to know that whaling is predominantly outlawed and frowned upon by modern society. He'd probably also be tickled to see the guy from MegaForce hamming it up as Captain Ahab.
The studio that has already given us mega sharks and mega piranhas is now giving us a mega whale, but don't call this Mega Dick. 2010: Moby Dick transports Herman Melville's timeless tale of revenge and man vs. nature to modern times by transforming the Great White Whale into a pissed-off prehistoric mega beast, Captain Ahab into a high tech submarine commander, and introduces a scientist named Dr. Michelle Herman played by Xena's former sidekick Renee O'Connor to no doubt provide copious amounts of explanatory exposition in between whale attacks and Ahab outbursts.

I hadn't intended to write another article about The Asylum's forthcoming take on Moby Dick so soon after an article mentioning it along with several other upcoming Asylum genre offerings, but since they've now put out artwork and some production stills and other sites have picked up on it, might as well...
The Asylum's updated take on Herman Melville's classic tale of obsession, revenge, and whaling sees the captain of a high-tech submarine on an obsessive quest to destroy the enormous prehistoric whale that maimed him. Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, MegaForce) and Renee O'Connor (aka Xena's sidekick Gabrielle) star.
It cannot be coincidence that The Asylum chose to get into the giant prehistoric killer whale business so soon after archaeologists discovered fossils of a species of prehistoric whale so ginormous they gave it the scientific name "Leviathan melvillei" after both the biblical monster Leviathan and...

In honor of Friday's release of The Expendables, we're taking a week-long look at the action films of Sir Sylvester Stallone -- which is to say we're skipping his comedies. Out of respect.
Title: Nighthawks
Setting: 1980 New York City, sort of like Walter Hill's The Warriors, only in daylight.
Our hero: Detective Sergeant Deke DaSilva, who has a real problem with pulling out his gun despite having already killed (literally) 52 people, and his completely pointless partner Billy Dee Williams.
Our villain/s: Rutger Hauer. Can you believe someone cast Rutger Hauer as a villain? Sarcastic wit aside, Hauer is wonderfully evil as international terrorist Wolfgar (often spoken with exclamation points), and it's interesting to note that this is the Dutch character actor's first American film. So there, I just noted it. Also there's an evil henchwoman played by the late Persis Khambatta, of Megaforce and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

With Piranha and Humanoids from the Deep getting all the love lately in the news, we'd be remiss if we did not mention two other Corman cult classics that are poised to make their special edition double-feature DVD debut from Shout! Factory.
From the Press Release:
Brace yourself for twice the fun, twice the adrenaline rush, and twice the traction as Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation, is set to release a dynamic duo of Roger Corman classics on one double-feature collector’s edition DVD. August 3, 2010, will see the release of Deathsport/Battle Truck Collector’s Edition, which marks the first time Deathsport is being presented in a widescreen format as well as the first-ever DVD release of Battle Truck (released theatrically as Warlords of the 21st Century). This double-barreled dose of high-octane excitement decisively marks the latest summer installment from fan favorite Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series.
