DESTINY'S CHAMPION is a late-stage character drama from the Shaw Brothers studio, retaining martial arts superstar Ti Lung who now takes on a supporting role of a mentor to a young man who is drawn into competing in a boxing match for the love of a girl. It's a contemporary drama that very much emphasises personality and character depth over any kind of external conflict, so those expecting wall-to-wall action are likely to be disappointed. There are only one or two fight scenes here. That's not to say that this is a bad film, but I found it merely average. It gets better when it turns into a straight ROCKY copy but that's only in the second half and there's a lot of slow material to get through before then. Lung is excellent, of course, and the main reason to tune into this one.
