Ghost hunting is having a moment... in graveyards, pubs, old houses, and on social media. Meet the new spirit seekers
As far as the four-man ghost-hunting crew Paraletic Activities are concerned, ghosts have between the hours of 8pm and 11pm to make themselves known. “We’re getting too old for the paranormal all-nighters!” laughs John Smith, 51, who by daylight hours is a commercial signwriter. At weekends he joins Neil, Luke and Nigel, three fellow 30- to 50-something Walsall Ghostbusters fans who have carried their childhood passion for the paranormal into middle age to form Paraletic Activities. They meet to drink real ale and explore the many reputedly haunted locations that litter the Midlands, from the ruins of Grace Dieu Priory in Leicestershire to spooky pubs such as The Four Crosses in Cannock.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a landmark horror film that solidified Tobe Hooper's legacy in the genre. Despite some misses like Djinn and Mortuary, Hooper's best movies showcase his impact on horror. Toolbox Murders and Poltergeist are standouts in Hooper's career, blending gore with supernatural elements.
Over an extensive and distinguished career, Tobe Hooper established himself as one of the most influential horror filmmakers of all time. After starting in 1969 with the little-known experimental release Eggshells, Hooper made his first horror movie in 1974 with the legendary The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The legacy of this movie alone would be enough to secure Hooper a place in the horror hall of fame. However, there is much more to Hooper's resumé than a single successful slasher.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way.
For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The cast includes Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, Raúl Castillo of Army of the Dead and Knives Out, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds and On The Come Up, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so we knew it had to be going to production soon, if it wasn’t already filming – and now Gage has confirmed that production is already underway.

Kyle Edward Ball's Skinamarink is a frightful marriage of primal fears and video experimentation. The film immerses the viewer in an ominous environment with long sequences of silence and shadow disrupted by flashes of light and explosive bursts of sound. The camera angles are odd, and the images are disturbing. Skinamarink channels David Lynch with its unnerving exploration of minute details. The household's disruption echoes Mark Z. Danielewski's surreal novel The House of Leaves.
With its plot, Skinamarink references Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist and the Paranormal Activity franchise. In its technique, the film calls to mind The Blair Witch Project, another groundbreaking movie that divided audiences. However viewers might feel about the director's style and methods, Skinamarink has many shocking moments to terrify horror fans.

A spinoff of the film franchise, “Freddy’s Nightmares” was an anthology series starring the original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund. Airing from 1988 to 1990, each episode told a different story of a dark rooted and grim nature that takes place in this fictitious town on Elm Street, and now a brand new book will take us deeper into the series than ever before.

We’ve known for a while that one of the new ghosts that will be featured in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife (watch it Here) sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (which, of course, also serves as a sequel to the original Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II) would be a giant creature known as the Sewer Dragon. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to reach theatres on March 22nd, and with just a couple weeks to go until we reach that date, a clip from the film has arrived online to give us a preview of a chase sequence that involves the Sewer Dragon. World-renowned director Steven Spielberg was at the height of his career when he made the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List," but he wasn't the only filmmaker who was interested in adapting the novel of the same name for the silver screen. The acclaimed director Billy Wilder, an auteur of classic Hollywood cinema who penned and directed such renowned films as "The Apartment" and "Sunset Boulevard," was also vying for the rights to turn this story into a movie. However, by the time Thomas Keneally's evocative historical novel was published in 1993, Wilder's career was already winding down.
For a long time, Wilder enjoyed one of the most prosperous careers in Hollywood. His Oscar-nominated 1944 film "Double Indemnity" is considered the signal film of noir cinema and the model of the femme fatale trope. After Wilder's smashing success "Sunset Boulevard" earned three Oscars in 1951, he quickly went on to release several star vehicles...

Something strange is happening in the neighborhood. Time to call the Ghostbusters. Sony has just released the final trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. While it’s been addressed in past trailers and TV spots that this new evil entity that is taking over New York City can scare people to death, and there’s been a mention of a “ghost army,” this final trailer emphasizes that every ghost that the Ghostbusters have ever caught will be unleashed. This provides an opportunity for the film to showcase old fan favorites as well as make references to the wild, unique ghosts of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and toy line. The notion of “every ghost they ever caught” sounds like an ultimate final conflict, but director Gil Kenan has stated that he already has ideas for sequels beyond Frozen Empire.

Well, it didn’t take long for the new “Ghostbusters” to team up with the classic “Ghostbusters,” right? After “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” writer/director Jason Reitman handed off the franchise and seemingly went back to the world of humanistic comedies. But he didn’t leave it in the lurch and remains a co-writer, producer, and executive producer on the project. The newest edition in the franchise, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” is directed by Reitman’s writing partner on the first film, Gil Kenan, who is known for directing “City of Ember” (2008), the supernatural horror film “Poltergeist” (2015).

From Poltergeist to The Conjuring, the history of the horror genre is rife with eerie behind-the-scenes stories like burned-down sets, freak accidents, and reports of paranormal activity. Most of these stories originate from the sets of supernatural horror films involving ghosts or demonic possessions, but one iconic horror film based on real events also had one of the most gruesome shoots. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in October, was shot in the blistering Texas heat in the dead of summer, with a small crew and a budget of less than $140,000. It was a bona fide nightmare behind the scenes, and considering the sheer number of injuries sustained by both the cast and crew, it's a wonder that everyone made it out alive.

Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Two artists at the very top of their fields. King: one of the best-selling authors of all time. Spielberg: the filmmaker who invented the blockbuster. How have these guys never worked together? Well, it's not for lack of trying. In fact, these titans have come very close to teaming up on several occasions. When Spielberg was writing "Poltergeist," he wanted King's help with the script. "It didn't work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown," King told EW.
Then there was "The Talisman," the fantasy novel King co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. Before the book even hit the shelves, Spielberg scooped up the rights — but neither a film nor a TV adaptation has ever materialized. "Several times he came very close to making it, and there were a lot of discussions about that," King said. It was...

Horror movies often subvert innocent childhood icons, like imaginary friends, to create unexpected chills. Evil imaginary friends are a common trope in the horror genre, serving as a major red flag for viewers. Horror movies like "May" and "Hide and Seek" showcase the terrifying consequences of characters' relationships with their imaginary friends.
Although imaginary friends might seem like a sweet, harmless part of childhood, plenty of horror movies have made them a terrifying part of their stories. One of the most effective ways of scaring a horror movie viewer is by subverting a seemingly innocent icon of childhood. From Chucky, the killer doll of the Child’s Play movies, to Stephen King’s Pennywise, the It villain that made clowns chilling, there are countless examples of horror movies subverting cozy pieces of childhood nostalgia and making them unexpectedly creepy. Some movies, such as the indie hit Skinamarink, even make their heroes children to underline this idea.

Poltergeist 2's Reverend Kane, played by Julian Beck, is an iconic horror villain despite Beck's battle with stomach cancer during filming. Beck's health condition added to the eerie appearance of Reverend Kane, making him even more terrifying on screen. Julian Beck passed away before post-production was completed, leading to some of his lines being re-recorded by a sound-alike. His death contributed to the "Poltergeist Curse" surrounding the franchise.
1986 sequel Poltergeist 2's villain, the terrifying Reverend Kane, is a horror icon, but actor Julian Beck barely made it through production alive. The first Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper and released in 1982, is a horror classic, managing to scare audiences while only being rated PG. At the time, the PG-13 rating didn't exist. In 1986, Poltergeist's Freeling Family — minus older daughter Dana, as actress Dominique Dunne had been tragically murdered in the intervening years — returned for another ghostly adventure. Few...

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire promises scarier and darker elements than Ghostbusters: Afterlife, satisfying the need to bring back the franchise's dark side. Director Gil Kenan, known for his horror film Monster House, will bring a balance of scares and comedy to the sequel. The new villain in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire can literally scare victims to death, indicating a focus on horror and a darker tone than its predecessor.
While Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a fine followup to the franchise’s earlier films, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s new director promises a big improvement in one vital sector. 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a strong reboot for a franchise that struggled with follow-ups for decades. 1989’s Ghostbusters II was mostly written off as a belated cash-in despite some strong scenes, while 2016’s divisive reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call failed to reinvent the franchise for a new generation. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

Haunted houses are a staple of horror movies. From The Shining to Poltergeist to The Conjuring, the world of cinema is full of films about houses, apartments, and hotels possessed by ghosts, demons, and various other manifestations of the supernatural. These stories scare us for a myriad of reasons. Sometimes, the rupture of the illusion of protection within one's home is enough to bring fear to our hearts. In other instances, it's what the ghosts represent — repressed memories, the past, the future — that really terrifies viewers. More often than not, these movies produce fright just by packing some good acting and even better scary scenes. In this scenario, Remi Weekes' His House stands out for featuring everything that makes a haunted house movie spooky, and then some more.

Disney's Tower of Terror has always felt like a thrilling outlier at any Disney park. Opened in Florida in 1994, the "Twilight Zone"-inspired thrill ride was always a little scarier than the rest of the Mouse House's family-friendly theme park attractions -- in a good way.
California's Tower of Terror may have had its last ride, but the attraction remains a landmark of Disney parks across the world, with additional versions in Tokyo and Paris. As with any Disney ride, a whole lot of thought went into the original planning of the attraction, and in the case of Tower of Terror, Imagineers were actually required to become classic TV binge-watchers. According to the official D23 website, everyone who helped design the Tower of Terror watched all 156 episodes of Rod Serling's seminal anthology series at least twice.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brings back the scares with director Gil Kenan's expertise in balancing horror and comedy. The sequel focuses less on the romance between characters Gary and Callie, allowing them to focus on their Ghostbuster roles. The return to New York City as the setting in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire aligns with the original movies and brings back iconic villain Walter Peck.
While Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a solid addition to the series, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire seems like a far stronger continuation of the franchise for several reasons. When 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot proved a financial and critical misfire, the creators of the franchise went back to the drawing board and offered viewers something completely different five years later. Where 2016’s reboot ignored the original characters, Ghostbusters: Afterlife centered their legacy and hyped their big return. Released by a train crash, a mysterious creature rampages through a small Ohio town. The military is on its trail, the local authorities are overwhelmed, and a group of local kids… who planned to spend their summer making a zombie movie… take it upon themselves to figure out what’s going on. That’s the set-up for director J.J. Abrams’ 2011 film Super 8 (watch it Here) – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
Like many aspiring filmmakers, J.J. Abrams started making movies at a young age, casting his friends and shooting on Super 8 film. As a teenager, he was able to participate in a young filmmakers’ festival in Los Angeles. Newspaper coverage of that festival caught the attention of one of Abrams’ heroes, another director who had gotten started making Super 8 movies when he was young: Steven Spielberg. A new episode of the Revisited video series has just made its way online, and with this one we’re celebrating the birthday of the late, great director Tobe Hooper by looking at one of his more underrated horror films: the 2004 release Toolbox Murders (watch it Here)! You can hear all about it in the embed above.
Toolbox Murders is technically a remake of the 1978 film The Toolbox Murders, but it’s very different from the source material. Written by Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, this one has the following synopsis: Young couple Steve and Nell move into a once fashionable, but now decaying, apartment block in Los Angeles, and soon realise that a number of young female residents have met unusually violent deaths. Before long, Nell makes some disturbing discoveries about the building’s manager and her fellow tenants.
The film stars Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Marco Rodríguez, Rance Howard,...

New images from the upcoming Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire have finally surfaced, one of which reveals an updated look for franchise favorite Slimer, the ghost with an insatiable appetite.
From the entertainment magazine Empire, per Collider, the newest image depicts the chunky green ghost surrounded by junk food containers, candy wrappers and a seemingly empty ghost trap which he has seemingly escaped from. Slimer looks notably updated as well, rendered with modern CGI effects that give him a fleshy, slimy, glowing green appearance with much more vivid detail on his body and slightly smaller eyes. The photo can be viewed below.

A new fan-made poster for the horror classic Poltergeist reimagines the film as a neon nightmare, deviating from the original black-and-white design. Despite being made over 40 years ago, Poltergeist still unnerves audiences with its horrifying haunting and ahead-of-its-time special effects. Efforts to revive the Poltergeist franchise have been ongoing, with a failed remake in 2015 and now a potential TV series in the works following Amazon's acquisition of MGM.
The 1982 horror classic Poltergeist is still considered one of the scariest movies ever released with a PG-13 certificate. However, a new A.I. generated fan-poster has reimagined the classic Tobe Hooper film as a neon nightmare that is probably more frightening than anything that befalls the Freeling family.
The poster, shared by @nckss_82 on Instagram, deviates significantly from the original Poltergeist poster to create something that screams “modern sensibilities” over subtlty. The classic poster's iconic black-and-white image of central character Carol Anne,...

A new AI-generated poster for the movie Poltergeist has been created, featuring vibrant colors and the classic demon. The poster captures the neon color aesthetic of the 1980s, immersing viewers in the time period of the film. Poltergeist remains one of the most classic horror films out of the 1980s, and is currently being developed into a TV series from Amazon and MGM.

Few films have arrived in theaters saddled with more baggage than "Twilight Zone: The Movie." That the anthology film featuring segments from John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller actually arrived in the first place was something of a surprise -- and for many in the entertainment industry, it wasn't a welcome one.
The production became a wholly avoidable tragedy on June 23, 1982, when a helicopter crashed on the set of Landis' segment, "Time Out," killing Vic Morrow and child actors Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen. The show does not always have to go on, but the movie was nevertheless completed and released (rather insensitively) on June 24, 1983, leading off with "Time Out". For some, it was like watching a snuff film.

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife (watch it Here) sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (which, of course, also serves as a sequel to the original Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II) is set to reach theatres on March 22nd – and during an interview with Empire magazine, director/co-writer Gil Kenan revealed that the film draws inspiration from the 1986 – 1991 animated series The Real Ghostbusters‘ willingness to be weird and wild.
Kenan said he appreciated The Real Ghostbusters‘ “wild, original and weird-as-fuck villains. We wanted to bring that show’s looseness and fearlessness to this movie. I think it’s going to surprise people just how big this film is.“
As Empire pointed out, The Real Ghostbusters “unleashed such oddities as a werechicken, a boogeyman, and an alternate reality with ‘Peoplebusters’.” As for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the main villain is something known as the Death Chill, and it also features a giant creature known as the Sewer Dragon.

Pop quiz – what do The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Crow, Rosemary’s Baby, and the recording of Iron Maiden’s The Number of the Beast have in common? All, allegedly, had inexplicable phenomena and strange circumstances plague their cursed productions. While some argue that most of the events were just circumstantial, nothing more, the nature and frequency make it pretty hard to shake. This brings us to The Omen, one of the more popular in a spate of films where the Devil was getting his due. The plot of the film is relatively straightforward: a baby boy is taken in by a diplomat and his wife turns out to be the Antichrist, and all manner of death and misfortune surround him. But that’s Hollywood, right? Yes, but the sheer number and uniqueness of the events that happened behind the scenes of the devilish flick would make the most skeptical of believers...

The Ghostbusters team is expanding in a major way in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife (watch it Here) sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Marketing materials for the film – which is set to reach theatres on March 22nd – have shown us original Ghostbusters Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore, played by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, suited up for ghostbusting action alongside their receptionist Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife characters Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), Lucky (Celeste O’Connor), and the Spengler family: Phoebe, Trevor, and Callie. Now Empire magazine has unveiled a new image that introduces inventor Lars Pinfield, a character played by British comedian James Acaster (Hypothetical). The Pinfield image can be seen at the bottom of this article – and seems to give a glimpse of a moment that could be reminiscent of the scenes where 007 would visit armourer Q in his lab, with people conducting experiments in the background.

The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

When people think of Star Wars, the name that springs to mind is George Lucas. He is, after all, the director and creator of the franchise. His name is literally in the production company Lucasfilm Ltd. One name that might not come immediately to mind is that of Kathleen Kennedy.
Kennedy is easily one of the most successful producers of all time, having been attached to some of the most iconic movies in current film history. She has also been acting president of Lucasfilm for the past decade. Though she was a natural fit to take the reins back in 2012, her tenure as president of Lucasfilm has been equal parts productive and complicated. Fans have been critical of her handling of their beloved Star Wars property. While some of these criticisms are warranted, others are rooted in something more sinister - sexism.
