If the golden era of the high school movie was the 1980s, packed with John Hughes’ tales of wistful outsider girls and horny nerds, then mid-late ‘90s was the reprise. This was the era of Valley Girls (Clueless), the make-over movie, and of course modern updates of classic literature. Cruel Intentions fits into this category and takes it to the next level. It’s a teen high school movie full of shagging and spitefulness which has genuine consequences and treats its characters like adults, while allowing them the naivety of youth. It’s 25 years old, and it’s still sexy as fuck.
Based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ which was filmed memorably as 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, Cruel Intentions had wonderfully salacious material to work with but big shoes to fill.

Pema Tseden was born in 1969. He started with short films before directing “The Silent Holy”, his debut feature-length film in 2005, the very first feature shot in Tibet with a Tibetan crew and Tibetan actors. His following 3 films got selected at international film festivals. As an author he both writes in Chinese and Tibetan. His books have been translated in several languages. Tharlo won the Golden Cyclo and the Inalco Grand Prize at Vesoul Iffac’s 22nd edition in 2016.
On the occasion of “Jinpa” screening at the 25th Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas, where it won the Golden Rickshaw, the Critic’s Choice Award and a Special Mention by the Inalco Jury, we speak with him about the film and “Tharlo”, Kekexili, the ambiguous ending, rituals and traditions in Tibet, revenge, and many other topics.
“Jinpa” seems to be more accessible than your previous film, “Tharlo”. Why did you choose this approach?...

Today the Cinelinx staff is taking a look some of the video games they’re looking forward to playing the most in the New Year! Come inside to check out their picks!
There are a Bunch of great looking video games on the horizon. While the back half of 2018 was positively stacked, that doesn’t mean there isn’t more for gamers to look forward to. As we did for films earlier this week, the team has gathered to break down the top fives each of them are the most excited about in 2019.

Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order - Despite having seen little-to-nothing of this game, I’m still listing it. Mostly, I’ve been waiting for a non-Battlefront Star Wars game since they announced more Star Wars games were in the works since 2013! It’s been a long time since we’ve had something different in the galaxy far,...

Accidentally, a Tibetan trucker kills a sheep with his vehicle before picking up a hitchhiker who says he’s on his way to kill a man, on purpose, in Jinpa (Zhuang si le yi zhi yang), the sixth feature from Tibetan director Pema Tseden (Old Dog). Based on the novel The Slayer by Tsering Norbu as well as the story I Ran Over a Sheep by Pema himself, this is an intriguing if austere art house item that should please lovers of slow cinema with a more mystical edge. Ever since seeing Creepshow (1982) when it first arrived on video, I’ve been enamored with anthology films; reaching back to Amicus’ ‘60s and ‘70s treasures like Tales from the Crypt (1972) all the way up to Epic Pictures’ Tales of Halloween (2015), omnibuses scratch a very particular itch for this viewer. Falling somewhere in the middle of my terrorline is From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), a proud and nasty addition to the sub-genre. This bugger does not mess around.
Released by Moviestore Entertainment stateside and by Cineplex-Odeon up here in Canada the following year, From a Whisper to a Scream (Aka The Offspring, which is what I knew it as) made back its $ 1.1 million budget plus a few dollars more, and the film received mixed reviews from critics in its limited release. My guess is that all true movie lovers have a list of films which remain unavailable on a decent DVD or Blu-Ray release and for which they are waiting for some company to pick up and give it a nice release. This was true for me regarding The Slayer. I first saw the film in the early-to-mid-eighties on a VHS double-bill with Fred Olen Ray’s Scalps. Both films were pretty terrible quality but both were fun in their own way and I duped both and kept them for a long time. Scalps has long since been on DVD (and recently Blu-Ray), and I have long owned a copy of that film which I still pull out from time to time and watch again. But my dupe of The Slayer died decades ago and I hadn’t viewed the film in a long time…...

The Slayer (1983) will be available on Blu-ray + DVD August 29th From Arrow Video
One of the most sought-after titles for slasher fans everywhere, The Slayer finally rises from the ashes of obscurity in a brand new 4K transfer courtesy of Arrow Video.
Two young couples set off to a secluded island for what promises to be a restful retreat. Is she losing her mind, or are her childhood nightmares of a demonic assailant coming to terrifying life?
Previously only available on home video in truncated or full screen versions, The Slayer – whose nightmares-seeping-into-reality theme predates a certain Wes Craven classic by several years – comes lovingly restored from the original negative in...

Chad Archibald, producer of Antisocial (a personal fave) turns his hand to directing with a film which is a bold attempt to create an all-new horror villain in The Drownsman. And hey, what’s not to like about another horror film starring the wonderful Michelle Mylett?
This time round Mylett plays Madison who, after almost drowning in a lake, develops debilitating hydrophobia and with good reason. It’s not just water the frightens Madison, it’s the supernatural entity that continually haunts her through it, a rancid ghostly entity trying to pull her into his dark, wet world. Her friends, worried for her sanity, decide to stage an intervention – with dire consequences. Their attempts to help their friend only unleash the drownsman’s rage...

Now this is more like it! One of Full Moon’s lesser-known movies, Shadowzone originally debuted in 1990, just after Puppet Master exploded on to the scene. It is also the second of three Full Moon Productions (the company name was later changed to Full Moon Entertainment) that were lensed between 1989 and 1991 – the others being Puppet Master and Meridian, both of which have already had the DVD, and in Puppet Master‘s case, Blu-ray, treatment from 88 Films.

Welcome to another installment of It Came From 1980X where I tackle the 80′s like a running clothes line fresh off the turnbuckle. Tonight we have a double feature for you straight from Continental Video. Don’t know Contintental Video? I’m not surprised, but I assure you by the end of this whole thing you most certainly will know them, fear them and maybe enjoy them a bit better. They’ve put out so much of what you love, but I don’t think they were marketed nearly as well as Midnight, Wizard, Canon or Media. For Christ’s sake somebody get me a T-shirt of this beautiful company. The double feature in question comes courtesy of Vhsps as is often the case. The Slayer and Scalps were released as a part of a special promotion as is stated on the cover of the VHS (or in this case handsome DVD rip).
2 Films.

There can never be enough retrospectives on the slasher genre, and Fangoria broke the news about a documentary that looks at my favorite kind of flick. No word yet on a release date.

Eric Weston, the filmmaker responsible for turning Clint Howard into a satanically powered psychopath in 1982’s Evilspeak, got in touch with Fango to talk up his new creature feature Hyenas. “I would say it belongs in the werewolf genre,” he tells us about the movie, which stars Saw villain Costas Mandylor and 2001 Maniacs starlet Christa Campbell, the latter of whom provided the fresh photos seen below.
“The story claims that there are several packs of these ‘were-hyenas’ roaming around the United States,” Weston continues. “They travel from place to place, finding people to eat. In our film, a man called Gannon, played by Costas, is out to get his revenge on the beasts that killed his wife and child. However, there is a nice amount of tongue-in-cheek humor in Hyenas; it has quite a lighthearted feel.”
The writer/director also acknowledges that it was something of a lucky break to get Mandylor involved.
