  • I watched this back on English cable (Sky Channel) here in Norway in the 1980's, and it was one of those shows that taught me English (together with classics like "The Lucy Show", "Three's Company", "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em", "Hogan's Heroes" etc :)

Basically it was a soap-opera based in a US naval base with Dennis 'McCloud' Weaver heading a wonderful cast consisting of TV-stars like Andrew 'Hollywood Wives' Stevens, Susan 'LA Law' Dey, Maud 'Octopussy' Adams, Richard Dean 'McGyver' Anderson, Jill 'Diamonds Are Forever' St. John and even the classy Hollywood-veteran Robert Loggia!

The 1980's was *THE* decade for soap-operas, and titles like "Dynasty", "Dallas" and "Falcon Crest" had people around the world, from every thinkable culture, glued to their seats. "Emerald Point N.A.S." had a hard time trying to get a big break in a field with such steep competition and it was buried after barely one season. But it was a fun show, with that cast, that setting (a lot of uniformed officers and fighter jets!) and last but not least: one of the coolest theme-songs ever for a soap-opera! Almost two decades later I still remember the entire thing! Not surprisingly it was composed by Bill Conti who also did the themes for "Cagney and Lacey", "Falcon Crest" and "North and South", three of my all time favorite TV-themes.

Yes, I know I don't have a life. You don't have to rub it in.
  • As the only other reviewer (from 20 years ago!) stated, this was a soap opera set on a U. S. naval base. In lieu of describing it as having an all-STAR cast, I'll go with all-recognizable.

I've never seen Dynasty, Hotel, Falcon Crest, Flamingo Road, Knots Landing, etc.---I suppose I'm aware of those titles mostly from seeing commercials for them back in the 80's---so I have no idea how Emerald Point NAS compares, but I can say that my wife and I did not find the show all that interesting. Out of respect to everyone involved, and to the wonderful 80's decade, we did sit through every single episode.

But when it was finally over, we were kind of relieved. Again, it just wasn't that interesting. It felt contrived and shallow, with lots of silly melodrama. Overall, just poorly written and executed.

Shows like The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and Knight Rider are MUCH more fun! So search for those instead.
