In a 1966 New Jersey high school, Jill and new student Sheik from the other side of the tracks make their way in a first love romance.
When the screenplay was completed, John Sayles shopped it around to several major Hollywood studios. They all rejected it, saying they did not like the ending, and would not support the film without major changes to the story.
Albert 'Sheik' Capadilupo:
When we were in high school...
Jill Rosen: We're not in high school any more.
The movie takes place in 1966 but all the Bruce Springsteen songs that were featured weren't recorded until the 1970's so they wouldn't be relevant. All the other songs on the soundtrack were actually recorded and released before or during that time frame so they fit and made sense.
At the conclusion of the closing credits, "For Dominique" appears. Presumably, the person is Dominique Dunne who passed away in 1982.
