  • "Coolie" is a film with something for everyone. We have plenty of action for macho guys, a love story for the ladies, and even political and social themes for artsy folks such as myself. Of course this is nothing new for a Bollywood movie, they are designed to reach as wide an audience as possible. What made "Coolie" stand out for me however, was the way "Coolie" turned everything up a notch. There was more action! More Romance! More elaborate musical numbers! It was almost as if the movie was defying other Bollywood films to try and top it. Of course, it's not just the over the top quality that makes the film memorable. "Coolie" combines the spectacular action and musical scenes with a genuine sense of style. Most importantly however, it is the presence of the legendary Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan that makes the film a fulfilling piece of entertainment.

Most Bollywood films are fairly easy to follow, since the producers know what their audience wants, and time and time again recycle the same story elements (examples being "Mother India" [1957] and "Deewar" [1975], two very different films on the surface, but with almost identical story lines). Although Coolie contains many of the classic thematic elements of many Bollywood movies (absent fathers, a quest for revenge, the "little guy" standing up against a powerful villain), it also differs from the norm in many ways. The plot is much more complicated and difficult to follow than most Bollywood movies (there are about five story lines happening at once), but the action set pieces and musical numbers help distract from that minor problem.

Indeed it is the action scenes that are the major attractions of "Coolie". These have to be the most surreal, artfully constructed action scenes I've ever witnessed. In many other Bollywood films, the action is kind of slap-dash, with actors running around hitting each other randomly, while the camera doesn't seem to know what to shoot. Although of course in "Coolie" the action scenes are fast paced and energetic, the directors Manmohan Desai and Prayag Raj infuse smooth tracking shots, slow motion and freeze frames. This could threaten to turn the action scenes into cheesy John Woo style set pieces, where the action scenes look more like a karaoke video, but Desai and Raj wisely keep a sense of humour to the proceedings. Possibly the strangest and most striking action moment comes towards the end. At one point Amitabh Bachchan is thrown against a table. Suddenly, the frame freezes. A title appears on the screen: "Amitabh Bachchan was seriously injured during this shot". The freeze frame ends, and the scene continues as if nothing had happened! Apparently there really is something for everyone, action, music, and even news!

Unfortunately, it's impossible for me to explore the film as deeply as I would like to here, but I wouldn't want to finish before briefly discussing Amitabh Bachchan's star persona. I understand why he is a legend in India. He absolutely commands this film. From his introduction (a hawk lands on his arm, and the camera slowly pans to reveal his face), even those not familiar with him know they are in store for something special. Bachchan proves himself to be adept at not only fierce action, but comedy as well, as evidenced by a goofy but funny scene where his female captive tricks him into getting his legs stuck over his head. Now I'm not trying to say that Bachchan is God's gift to the art of acting, but he does what he does well, and there is no denying that, regardless of your usual cinematic tastes (I'm more partial to Ray, Ghatak, and Sen films myself), Coolie is superior entertainment.

Becoming a mega-star in the late 70s proved to be a double-edged weapon for Amitab Bachchan. On one hand, films would be specifically written for him. On the other, his roles became repetitions of his star persona, with popular gags and situations endlessly recreated film after film. Compared to the embarrassing shows in which Mr. Bachchan would later be involved, "Coolie" is quite enjoyable and dignified.

From the very beginning, it is pretty clear that Amitab Bachchan IS the movie. The opening credits (with his name above the title) do not roll till halfway into the film, when the main star makes his appearance: the camera pans towards him while he runs to the rescue of his father figure. "Coolie" somehow features the highest number of lost children, missing parents and secret identities per square meter. Bachchan plays Iqbal, a Muslim coolie (train porter), raised by a Hindi old man and in love with independent Julie, a Christian girl. Religious differences do not seem to matter in this movie, which curiously has Communist undertones, and not only for the coolies red shirts. The scene in which they invade the engagement party to demand decent homes looks like the camp version of an Einseinstein movie: Amitab fights against the villain while holding the sickle and hammer, which he calls "the weapons of the worker."

Waheeda Rehman, still stunning in her late forties, perfectly plays Amitab's estranged mother (in real life she was just six years older than him). To some extent she is the heroine: she is the goal of his quest and the one for whom he confronts the villain at the end. Rishi Kapoor is lovable as the hero's sidekick (nicknamed "tingu-ji/ shorty" in contrast to Iqbal's "lambuji/ tall" in a hilarious song). His dance with the child version of his sweetheart is absolutely cute. In addition, the love songs between Iqbal and Julie (an elegant Rati Agnihotri) are nice to watch.

Nowadays, this film is mainly remembered for the accident that almost killed Bachchan: during one of the numerous fight scenes, he knocked against a table and ruptured his spleen. India literally came to a halt, while fans camped outside the hospital, afraid that their beloved star would die. It is reported that blood donations (of which Bachchan would later become an advocate) dramatically increased. The actual take of the accident was the one used in the film. At that point, the screen freezes and an inter-title in English, Hindi and Urdu appears: "This is the shot in which Amitab Bachchan was seriously injured." The ending also blurs the limits between fiction and reality. The original one, in which Iqbal died, was changed (it would have looked like a bad joke). Instead, the last scenes recreate the real-life vigils of his fans outside the hospital. We see Muslims, Hindis, Christians and Sikhs all offering prayers for his recovery. The final speech truly sends shivers down my spine: a visibly pale Amitab (as Iqbal) thanks his friends (audience)for their support from the hospital balcony. Tears roll through his face while he says "It was your prayers what kept me alive", and you know that he is NOT acting.

If you want to know what it means to be a Bollywood mega-star, "Coolie" is the film for you.
  • well, we all know that Manmohan Desai's movies are completely devoid of logic but yet are entertaining and paisa wasool. Coolie is remembered for Amitabh's unfortunate accident which gave the movie a lot of publicity.

The movie is pretty entertaining, but would come after Amar Akbar Anthony,Naseeb,Suhaag and Parvarish among other Amitabh and Manmohan Desai movies.

The action and comedy scenes are good. Amitabh is excellent as usual, specially his introductory scene is awesome,Waheeda Rehman is pretty good,Kader Khan is alright,Rishi Kapoor does not has much to do,Rati Agnihotri looks beautiful and does a good job. Rest of the cast is just OK, but the guy who plays Amitabh's uncle ,a coolie himself who brings him up does a very good job.

Direction by Manmohan Desai is not at par with his previous work and there are certain parts in the second half of the movie where too many coincidences start taking place, and logic takes a complete backseat which is a bit much even for a Manmohan Desai film.

The music by Laxmikant Pyarelal is average and some songs come as a hindrance in the story narrative, with the song "saari duniya ka bojh" being the best one, which shows the problems faced by coolies in their day to day life

A DECENT AND ENJOYABLE ONE TIME WATCH mainly due to Amitabh's powerhouse performance as the macho coolie iqbal which is the primary reason that this movie became the biggest superhit of 1983.
  • This movie is fantastic. Amitabh stars as the orphaned Iqbal. He grows to become a coolie in the railway stations of India. His mother was kidnapped by an ex of hers when Iqbal was a child, the ex wanted the mother so bad, that he caused a city wide flood (yeah right!) His father is believed to be deceased and the only family he has are the coolie's he works with. He is the man who picks up the entire worlds' luggage on his shoulder. The songs are good. I give this classic movie an 8 out of 10.
  • This is a movie which's clips will be shown on every channel when GOD Amitabh comes to die, i hope at least a hundred years from now. Because this is the movie in which that Punneet issar guy almost killed Amitabh bachchan during the shooting. About the movie itself, not the best Amitabh-Rishi movie, not the best Amitabh-Manmohan Desai movie (though not as bad as Ganga Jamuna Saraswati), actually not the best Amitabh movie. Worse is that you have Suresh Oberoi in it. rati Agnihotri is the leading lady. Okay, so they couldn't get Hema, Parveen or Zeenat, at least take jaya Pradha. The director has a song in this movie which says it all about the movie " accident hogaya rabba rabba" . But i may be prejudiced because they actually freeze the shot where Amit gets hurt and you see the man inb pain. And to see that happening to The Man who has given me and so many other people hours and hours and hours of joy in our life through his movies is painful. But to be a real bachchan fan, you need to own this movie just for the historic value
  • I had to review this movie as I noticed a guy named sylvan de Souza was comparing Coolie with Singh is King. These days any tom dick and harry are reviewers. Comparing Coolie with Singh is King is like comparing Titanic (Box office Blockbuster and Critical Hit, Classic) with Master and Commander (Box office hit and critical hit at the time, but now long forgotten). I guess that guy Sylvan does Not understand that Coolie was a Enormous hit World wide. I got African and Arabic friends who say Coolie is like their favourite film, a legend of a movie in so many countries in Africa, Europe and the Arab world. It may be loud and over the top with lots of co incidences, but that's what Manmohan desai films are all about. Entertainment is the reason most people all over the world watch a movie. Its what makes money in the box office. Unfortunately Art films don't make huge money. Coolie is commercial entertainment cinema from the 80s at its best. One of the best Big B Films. Especially when he runs of the platform. Apparently women went mad at his macho style. Quote Malika Sherawat at Koffee with Karan
  • THE film COOLIE was over-hyped like hell, like today's SINGH IS KINNG Those days Bachchan ruled the roost and his mere presence got great audiences

The film also got a million dollar publicity cos of Amitabh's real life accident while doing a stunt

The film however is a typical Hindi film by MDK who specialised in long lost and all masala films those days, This is just another masala film by him

The film starts off well and the problems of the Coolie people are well handled

The film then however looses momentum and has songs, comic scenes(the leg one by bachchan is funny) and romantic angles of Rishi.etc

The focus becomes more on comedy and less on a story MDK as usual forces all commercial ingredients in 1 film and hence you have a long lost formula(Amitabh and his father)a romantic angle, comedy and everything

Suddenly Iqbal joins politics from being a coolie which is too superficial and also the entire angle of Bachchan attacking Om Shivpuri's house in the middle

There is no proper plot in the film, The film also reminds us of many old films by MDK like the long lost angle of Bachchan and his dad, straight out of AAA, SUHAAG, NASEEB in AAA, Nirupa Roy regains her eyes suddenly when she goes towards the temple, here Waheeda regains her voice this was repeated in MARD too

The climax is too artificial and was changed because of the accident

Direction by MDK is okay, this pales front of NASEEB, AAA Music is okay

Amitabh does his part very well, He steals the show and carries the film on his shoulders Rishi too is excellent Shoma Anand and the young Rati Agnihotri are okay Om Shivpuri, Suresh Oberoi are the clichéd villains Kader Khan is as usual, Waheeda Rehman is good
  • This is among my favourite Bollywood films of all time. I grew up watching this film and have seen it 100s of time. this is one movie i never get bored watching. Amitabh in a powerhouse performance. This is the movie which shooked India, when Amitabh was injured on sets. In the original script Amitabh was suppose to die, but the script got changed and dedicated to his survival. The movie has great music, my favourite among the songs are Lambujee. It had Action, romance, comedy, family drama and the regular Bollywood Masala. It was an instant classic with a Brilliant Opening. It did great financially and is one of the Biggest Films of the 80s in Bollywood. The actress Rati was pretty good looking and decent. Rishi Kapoor was amusing as the supporting character. Kader Khan is great as the villain of the movie. A MUST SEE

The movie direction is very stupid and done illogically. The movie is has such a good story but lack of logic and bad screenplay made the movie unwatchable. It is a nightmare for talented actors and actresses in the movie.
  • True, this was brilliant movie with a little bit of everything in it. Despite his injury, Amitabh was brilliant and i especially like the ending, he thanked all his fans world wide for the support they gave him after the accident on set. Something worthwhile watching.
  • I was blown away with movie when I saw its first time in 1995 .. and probably it was my 2nd or 3rd Amitabh bachchan movie back then. I have five favourite Hindi movies...And This is the very first one. I watched this movie as a child and fell in love with it.

Its amazing from start to finish. The acting...again from Amitabh Bachan superb....he grabs your attention the moment you start watching him, and to take your eyes away from him is impossible. The plot and characters are too complex to explain as they are all connected one way or another. This is the only movie i have seen Kader Khan play a Villain and he does it fantastically.

The songs....all are excellent, my particular favourites are, Saari Duniya, Mubarak Ho Tum Sab ko Hajj Ka Mahina, Mujhe Peenay ka shok Nahin, And the hilarious Lambuji Lambuji...

Amazing on screen relationship between Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachan, comic and touching.

As Always Amitabh has an excellent relationship with himself and an animal...in this case a falcon known as Allah Rakha.

This movie has a wonderful portrayal of Islam...And is wonderful to watch...i will never get tired of this movie...
  • I have seen this movie more than 40 times, it's one of my all time favorite. Amithab Is so good in this movie. He is good in the comedy part where he put his legs over his head and gets stuck. and the last part when he gets shoot and still prays to good and kills the bad guy. it' a cool movie

Amitabh Bachchan in a powerhouse performance This was the movie where Amitabh was critically injured while filming a fight scene with fellow co-star Puneet Issar Many Indians prayed in temples or offered to sacrifice their own limbs to save him In the climax of this movie, it had the same type of thing

Amitabh Bachchan excels and really looks like a true Muslim on screen Rishi Kapoor is OK in a supporting role Rati Agnihotri looks sweet Shoma Anand in OK Waheeda Rehman in her late forties plays Amitabh's mother though in real life she is six years older than him Suresh Oberoi, Kader Khan, Om Shivpuri plays the villains
  • As an epic film admirer, this film was especially special due to the dramatic finale with some of the best dramatic acting ever witnessed. This movie has it all: comedy, action, romance, and dramatic sequences with some of the best fight scenes ever planned.
  • Coolie review:

2nd December 1983 was most awaited day for Indian movie buffs, particularly Amitabh Bachchan fans. Manmohan Desai's Coolie was releasing on that day - a film which had attracted immense attention even before its release due to Bachchan's near fatal accident while shooting it. The particular scene required the screen baddie Punit Issar to punch him in the stomach and then Amitabh was to roll over on a table. Unfortunately, the punch got mistimed and hit Bachchan hard and he got further hurt on the iron table rupturing his intestines.

The entire India, including the then PM Indira Gandhi and his close friend Rajiv Gandhi, paid visits to Breach Candy hospital and prayed for the superstar's speedy recovery. After many months, Bachchan was back on his feet, quite frail and weak but re-shooting the film from that very same scene. Manmohan Desai (Manji as he was affectionately called) froze the movie frame with a note stating "This is the shot in which Amitabh Bachchan was seriously injured" to let his audience know the exact unfortunate moment.

Coolie was sold out for weeks in advance and getting tickets was next to impossible. A two to three rupees ticket was black marketed for a whopping three hundred rupees!! Badal Bijlee, Matunga was perennially housefull so my parents took me to Capitol Cinema opposite CST (then VT) and I still remember the entire audience at Capitol just stood up and clapped loudly for minutes as Amitabh made his grand onscreen entry walking on top of a train with an eagle in hand. It was a great gesture to welcome him back on screen after this accident. The film became a blockbuster hit and ran for multiple weeks at Capitol where films wouldn't last for a week or two. The main theatre was of course Alankar at Gol Deval where the film completed a golden jubilee run. Manji even refused to give Alankar Cinema to Prakash Mehra for Sharaabi (1984) though Coolie had completed a silver jubilee. It lead to an argument between the two rival filmmakers.

As a standalone product, Coolie was quite underwhelming compared to Manji's other hits like Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) and Naseeb (1981). It was the standard lost and found formula with the separated child growing to be a railway coolie who then takes on the perpetuators and also finds his family in the end. Ths film also had a strong communist undertone where Amitabh held the hammer and sickle in the posters. But nobody cared about all that. Coolie was Amitabh's triumph over death and the whole India celebrated it wholeheartedly!!

    Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
