Fictional account of real-life mystery writer Dashiell Hammett, and his involvement in the investigation of a beautiful Chinese cabaret actress' mysterious disappearance in San Francisco.
The movie depicts San Francisco "Chinatown" story elements. When the film was first developed, the year was 1975, the same year as when the film's source novel was first published and around one year after Chinatown (1974) had been made and released. 'The Video Vacuum' has said: "In the wake of Chinatown (1974)'s success, Hollywood went detective crazy. When they weren't remaking movies[,] old detective movies like 'Farewell My Lovely' [See: Murder, My Sweet (1944)], they were doing flicks that channeled the detective films of the 30's and 40".
You know what my problem is? I'm a halfway honest man in a nine-tenths dishonest world. What's your problem?
Doc Fallon: My advice? Don't hesitate.
