Al Pacino had a rough 1980s. After riding high off of one of the most titanic runs in Hollywood history throughout the 1970s, with highlights like The Godfather I and II, Serpico, And Justice For All, and Dog Day Afternoon, the well ran dry real quick for Pacino once 1980 hit. Except for Scarface, which was a modest hit at the box office, every film he made was either more notorious for its controversies, like Cruising, or a complete dud that no one remembers, like Revolution. Not to mention he took a huge four-year break from film acting to do more theater work, and get in touch with his roots, so to speak. Once that period was over, he came back in a big way with the film that arguably saved his stardom from being in jeopardy: Sea of Love.

Howard Hawks was the Oscar-nominated director who has become a favorite among cinephiles, praised as a master of genre entertainments. But how many of his titles have remained classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Hawks’ greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1896, Hawks had a background in engineering and aviation before turning to filmmaking during the silent era. He proved himself to be a versatile talent, adapting his direct, fast-paced style to a variety of genres, including comedies, westerns, film noir, adventures (“Only Angels Have Wings”), gangster epics (“Scarface”) and war dramas.
Although Hawks often explored the codes of masculinity in films starring Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and Cary Grant, he was noted for his strong-willed, fast talking female characters, coined the “Hawksian woman.” The battle of the sexes was never more evenhanded than it was in one of his films, thanks to the likes of Katharine Hepburn,...

HBO’s buzzy new original series “The Idol” has been steadily building momentum on the road to its June 4 debut — including a lavish world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by one of the most talked-about afterparties on the Croisette.
The show follows an embattled young pop star named Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), recovering from a psychotic break after the death of her mother and hounded relentlessly by industry vultures that need her back on top. A sketchy Svengali named Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) appears in her life, promising artistic and sexual liberation and fame beyond her wildest dreams. “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson steers the show with co-creators Tesfaye and Reza Fahim.

The best Scarface quotes are a key reason Tony Montana has gone down in history as one of the greatest movie gangsters of all time, and Al Pacino's wild Cuban mobster has so much more to say than inviting people to greet his little friend. Scarface is full of various tiny details, and the variety of quotes is only one element that contributed to making the film a cult classic. Like many gangster movies, the origins of Scarface can be traced back to the infamous Al Capone, but none of Tony Montana's wisecracks or wisdom can be attributed to the real-life mobster. Every single one of the best Scarface quotes is a product of the script, which is part of the reason it has such an enduring legacy.
Tony Montana's actions might be questionable (just like the actions of many other characters in the film), but his sharp tongue...

Imitation is supposedly the greatest form of flattery, although the fact Louis Vuitton famously sue counterfeiters perhaps attests otherwise. In the film world, the word “remake” is one that can often find itself in precarious territory. From Brian de Palma’s Scarface, and 1969’s True Grit, to John Carpenter’s The Thing, many a feature has enjoyed a cinematic rebirth, a fresh take, that from a different perspective can give a movie a new lease of life. While there have been many films that have, by all intents and purposes, outdone their predecessor where remakes, sequels, and spin-offs are concerned, is there a point that we draw a line in the sand and deem certain movies untouchable?

Heat's iconic diner meeting between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro's characters was a special moment for the two actors. Pacino and De Niro rose to prominence around the same time during the early '70s. De Niro became a star thanks to his work in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver and would go on to deliver incredible work in everything from Once Upon A Time In America to Jackie Brown. Pacino's breakout was The Godfather, and he has amassed an extraordinary run of classic performances from Serpico to Scarface and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Michael Mann's movie Heat had been simmering for a long time, with the filmmaker first conceiving of the idea in the late '70s. He even shot a prototype (of sorts) with TV movie L.A. Takedown, which adapted his Heat screenplay into a TV show pilot. Heat was weirdly snubbed for any major award,...

American Gangster, an epic crime movie starring Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, and directed by Ridley Scott, tells the compelling true story of Harlem crime boss Frank Lucas, leading many viewers to seek out other films like it. The film was a box office success, but hasn't reached the same levels of popularity as other films in the same genre, or from the same director or stars. Nevertheless, the film is sufficiently engaging that many audiences are interested in watching other crime movies like American Gangster.
The 2007 film is based off the true story of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) a drug trafficking criminal who rose to prominence in the '60s and '70s, and the investigation into his affairs by Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe). Flamin’ Hot, a.k.a. the Cheetos movie, is a biopic about the inventor of the titular snack food, but there are other exciting details surrounding the film than just its brand recognition. Based on the 2013 memoir A Boy, a Burrito and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive by Richard Montañez, Flamin’ Hot tells the story of the creation of Frito-Lays’ Flamin’ Hot Cheetos line of snacks. It’s a rags-to-riches tale following Montañez from his humble beginnings on the floor of a Frito-Lay factory to the executive suite. Directed by former Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, Flamin’ Hot depicts how a culture-shifting product is created and what happens to its inventor.
PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay is a massive manufacturer of corn and potato-based snack food products including Fritos, Doritos, Lay’s, Ruffles, and Cheetos. The Cheetos snack foods are a crunchy, cheese-flavored corn puff snack introduced in 1948. Frito-Lay had hit...

The undisputed king of the screwball comedy is Cary Grant, and frankly, I don't think it's close. With classics of the genre like "His Girl Friday," "The Awful Truth," and "Holiday" under his belt, the most dapper man in Hollywood was also one of its funniest. Honestly, it's a little unfair that one person could be that handsome and that funny at the same time. Those two qualities should be at complete odds with one another. That's only fair.
If someone wanted to understand what the archetypical screwball comedy is, the film I would most likely show them is Howard Hawks' 1938 classic "Bringing Up Baby," starring Grant with his frequent screwball partner Katharine Hepburn. Its brand of antics is particularly wacky even by the standards of the best screwball comedies, and every single time I throw on the movie, whether I'm watching it in full or just looking at individual scenes,...

The Boogeyman director Rob Savage recently claimed his upcoming horror is Stephen King's scariest adaptation ever. Based on the acclaimed author's 1973 short story of the same name, The Boogeyman centers on Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) as they struggle to recoup following their mother's untimely death. Meanwhile, their psychiatrist father, Will (Chris Messina), also endures the tragic loss when he takes on a new patient dealing with the mysterious deaths of his children.
Speaking with SFX magazine (via GamesRadar), Savage claimed The Boogeyman will be King's scariest adaptation yet. While developing the movie, Savage and writer Mark Heyman were honest with the original short story, yet adapted King's work in a way like never before. Read what the director said below:
"But I don't think there's been a King adaptation that's as viscerally scary as this movie."

A new Grand Theft Auto 6 leak has indicated what era the game may take place. Previous titles from GTA's so-called 3D era such as Vice City and San Andreas took place in the 80s and 90s respectively, but the more recent HD era has largely taken place in the present day with GTA 4 and 5, and many believed GTA 6 would follow this pattern.
A new leak from GTA6posts on Twitter suggests otherwise, however, showing a variety of clips from GTA 6's development, continuing from the massive, 90-video leak last year that revealed the game's protagonists and the return to Vice City. One new clip, in particular, may have revealed the era of the game's setting through the cost of cigarettes. Cigarettes are priced at $4.10, and when factoring in inflation and past costs of items over the years, this seems to point to GTA 6 being set in the late '90s to the early 2000s,...

In the '90s, it was almost impossible to watch a movie promo without hearing that “Siskel and Ebert give it two thumbs up!” But how did their legacy come to be, and why were we so insistent on listening to what these two guys had to say? Well, we’re here to answer this question for you. Not only were Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert both finely-tuned film critics in their own right, but together they were a force to be reckoned with because of their chemistry and criticism. And while the duo often clashed in regard to what they considered to be a good film, it almost went without saying that if they were in agreement, then it’s surely a film worth watching.
In this article, we’re going to talk about both Siskel and Ebert's individual critical styles, how these worked together, and why their joint...

I’ve loved gangster movies since I was four years old and saw Humphrey Bogart and Sylvia Sidney in Dead End (1937) on TV, and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) at the movies (My dad pinched a lobby card for me). Every Friday night, a local NYC station ran old crime flicks on a slot called “Tough Guys.” Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and George Raft were the faces over the title. Today that might be Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and James Gandolfini.
The gangster and crime genre produced some of the most influential films in cinema history. Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar (1931), William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931), and Howard Hawks’ Scarface (1932), get a lot of credit for breaking ground in topics beyond criminality, shattering sexual taboos as well as the boundaries of acceptable visual violence. With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”

They say “sex sells” in Hollywood, right? But what about drugs? After all, once the production code was lifted, successful counterculture drug movies like Easy Rider gave way to the indie auteur movement in American cinema in the 1960s and 70s, where Hollywood renegades like Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese picked up the mantle and went on to make all-time classics like Scarface and Goodfellas decades later. In the interim, there has been no shortage of critical and commercial drug movie successes, be they Blow, Sicario, Traffic, The Wolf of Wall Street, you name it.

Grand Theft Auto 6's map might be bigger than fans initially thought. As revealed in confirmed leaks last year, the long-awaited next game in Rockstar's juggernaut GTA series is making a return to the fictional Miami location, Vice City. Previously, Vice City was a location drenched in 80s pop culture references, from its music and fashion to nods to Miami Vice and Scarface, but GTA 6 will show a new version of the city that's more in keeping with the present-day versions of Liberty City and Los Santos seen in GTA 4 and GTA 5.
Using information gathered from the GTA 6 leaks and Rockstar's Rage Engine units, a fan had compared the new Vice City map to GTA 5's Los Santos. GTA 6's Vice City seemed to be a bit larger Los Santos, but had plenty of room to explore further north, as the land appeared to continue off the top of the map.

There are plenty of iconic action movies that have shaped the genre, but many of them are actually remakes. Remakes happen for a variety of reasons: as a language remake to introduce popular movies to the global audience, to create a live-action version of an animated movie, which Disney in particular are keen on, or simply to recreate an old movie for new audiences to enjoy. Remakes can be a sore topic among audiences, especially when a beloved movie is butchered. Many view them as an easy cash-grab for productions, especially as audiences are intrigued by the remake - whether they approve or not.
However, remakes can be a great way to reinvent forgotten movies and plenty of iconic movies nowadays are remakes from the early 1900s. Even Disney’s live-action remakes perform surprisingly well at the box office, especially those of the older movies, because of the new audiences they introduce.

The cast of Brian De Palma's Scarface is as iconic as the movie itself. The 1983 classic tells the rags-to-riches story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana as he builds his drug empire in Miami. Even though the Oliver Stone-written feature takes inspiration from a 1930 novel and Howard Hawks's briefly-banned original 1932 film also called Scarface, De Palma's movie is more than just a crime drama. Tony's aggressive desire to get to the top stands for many immigrants' wishes to achieve their very own American Dream. The larger social context aside, Scarface is also a cult classic for its stylized violence and vibrant costume design.
Scarface also features some iconic quotes like "Say hello to my little friend" and "The eyes, chico. They never lie," which have become pop culture canon. Electronic music veteran Giorgio Moroder's score also continues to be a highlight. Some of the movie's elements haven't aged well,...

Los Angeles, April 22 (Ians) Hollywood legend Al Pacino opened up about turning down the role of Han Solo in ‘Star Wars’ because he “didn’t understand the script” and said that he “gave Harrison Ford a career.”
The 82-year-old opened up about being a “new kid on the block” at the time of inception for the now-cultural phenomenon and explained that although they “offered him so much money” he just “didn’t understand” the storyline.
“Well, I turned down Star Wars,” he told David Rubenstein as part of the 92nd Street Y, New York’s People Who Inspire Us series, reports mirror.co.uk.
“When I first came up, I was the new kid on the block, you know what happens when you first become famous.
“It’s like, ‘Give it to Al,’ they’d give me Queen Elizabeth to play,” Al recalled. “They gave me a script called Star Wars.

Al Pacino has teasingly taken credit for Harrison Ford’s illustrious career.
Before Ford became known globally as rebel hero Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise, it appears the Millennium Falcon spaceship could’ve had a different pilot.
During an event in New York on Wednesday (19 April), Pacino revealed he had originally been offered Ford’s role in the sci-fi fantasy.
“When I first came up, I was the new kid on the block, you know what happens when you first become famous,” The Godfather star told the audience per Variety. “It’s like, ‘Give it to Al.’ They’d give me Queen Elizabeth to play.”
Pacino said he was given a “script called Star Wars”and had been offered “so much money”.
The 82-year-old Scarface actor explained that he “read it” but “didn’t understand it”.
“So I said I couldn’t do it,” Pacino said. “I turned down Star Wars.

F. Murray Abraham’s exit from Mythic Quest is the subject of a recent media report surrounding alleged sexual misconduct allegations made about him during his time on the Apple TV+ series.
According to Rolling Stone, the actor’s departure ahead of the comedy’s third season followed at least two complaints about Abraham’s alleged behavior. Citing an unnamed production source, the outlet reported that the first alleged incident led to Abraham receiving a warning and being told to keep his distance from some of the actresses on the show. Series co-creator and star Rob McElhenney was reportedly later informed of a second alleged incident, at which point Abraham was let go, per the publication.
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, series producer Lionsgate Television said, “We take allegations of misconduct seriously and investigate them thoroughly. As a matter of corporate policy, we do not discuss our personnel actions.

The Heat cast is full of legendary movie stars and revered character actors playing both cops and crooks. Written and directed by Michael Mann, Heat is an intense, action-packed crime thriller about a street war that brews between the officers of the LAPD and the band of bank robbers loyal to a notorious thief. Heat has more focus on relationships and character development than the average action movie. It has plenty of shootouts and fast cars, but it also has plenty of engaging dialogue scenes that deepen the characters and their dynamics.
Heat is one of the most influential crime films ever made, inspiring everything from The Dark Knight to the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Not only is Heat distinguished for its thrilling action sequences; but it’s also notable for being the first on-screen pairing of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Every now and then, an actor is vocal about disliking a film they once starred in.
While the question “Do you have any career biggest regrets?” may be one of the more obvious ones a journalist can ask an actor. the answer can sometimes be extremely revealing.
Many Hollywood stars have spoken negatively about their past choices, and have even poked fun at the role during an appearance in another one of their films.
Others – for example: Charlize Theron – have admitted accepting a film purely based on the director’s filmography, only to then be let down by the final results of their collaboration.

In her own home, Italian American working mom Kristin Balbano Jordan (Toni Collette) is hardly the boss. When her deadbeat hubby isn’t cheating on her, he calls the shots, and her independent-minded son can’t wait to leave for college. At work, her male colleagues undermine her every idea. What Kristin doesn’t realize is that it’s not her destiny to be a doormat. Far from it. Come to find, she’s next in line to run Italy’s well-connected Balbano clan, and though Kristin couldn’t have imagined she was heir to an organized crime family, taking charge amounts to an offer she can’t refuse.
A fun fish-out-of-water farce with “Godfather” DNA and a clever female-empowerment kick, “Mafia Mamma” makes inspired use of Collette, who’s never better than when playing women we oughtn’t to have underestimated. Here, using stiletto heels to brutally stab a rival clan’s top assassin,...

The Godfather trilogy is one of the most beloved film series, and part of its universal acclaim comes from its incredible cast of all-star Hollywood actors and amazing newcomers. The mobster movie franchise is about the rise and fall of war-hero-turned-evil-gangster Michael Corleone, and it's an endlessly captivating crime drama that's had an influence on cinema for more than half a century. The first Godfather movie was released in 1972 and put writer-director Francis Ford Coppola on the map, The Godfather Part II was released in 1974 and is as good as, if not better than, the original, and the legacy sequel The Godfather Part III was released in 1990.
The franchise continues to have a significant legacy, with The Offer, a drama series about the true story behind the making of The Godfather, being released on television in 2022. John Leguizamo joked if “white people can take Latino roles” then he wants to play Gwyneth Paltrow in the ski accident trial movie.
Speaking of Latino underrepresentation in Hollywood, the 62-year-old actor said it’s not right to cast non-Latino actors in Latino roles.
On Monday’s (27 March) episode of The Daily Show, Leguizamo spoke about American actors such as James Franco being cast as Fidel Castro in Alina of Cuba.
“Well guess what? If white people can take our roles, imma take theirs,” he said. “When they do the TV series based on Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski accident trial, Imma be Gwyneth Paltrow.”
Paltrow is currently facing trial after being sued by a man who accused her of colliding with him in a “hit-and-run ski crash” seven years ago.

The upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 can break a long-running trend of the 26-year-old franchise. Rockstar confirmed that it's been actively developing the next entry in its immensely successful open-world crime series, moving all available resources onto the title's development. Leaks last year revealed its setting and protagonists and gave players a glimpse at some of the new gameplay mechanics in store.
As per the leaks, GTA 6 will return to Vice City for the first time since the series' "3D era", which consisted of six interconnected titles released between 2001 and 2006, although whereas that era's version of the city was set in the 80s and paid homage to the likes of Miami Vice and Scarface, GTA 6's will reportedly be set in the present day like GTA 4 and GTA 5. The title will also follow GTA 5's lead by having multiple playable protagonists, a "Bonnie and Clyde-esque" duo called Lucia and Jason.

The world has really woken up to gaming in recent years as this interactive form of entertainment has begun to be accepted by more and more people. As of 2022, more than half of the global population has become a gamer and the number of people taking up the hobby continues to grow. This phenomenon has been driven by many factors, including the fact that many of the biggest online casino brands offer no-deposit bonuses to new players just for creating an account, as well as the ever-growing interest in free-to-play video games like Fortnite and Cs:go.
There are many signs of this increasing prevalence of gaming, most notably in popular culture. More and more people can be seen dressing up in elaborate costumes for events like Comic-Con, and even more wearing gaming-related fashion items as they go about their daily lives.

Focusing on Johansen, his legacy and his special January 2020 performance, the film documents the punk legend as he “regales the audience with stories and music illuminating the art and cultural evolution of New York City,” according to the film’s logline.
Scorsese explained what drew him to this project: “I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been a touchstone ever since I listened to the Dolls when I was making ‘Mean Streets’… Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City. I often see him perform,...

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the trampy heroine of any modern female-slanted rom-com must make Bridget Jones look like Grace Kelly by comparison. And while Leah McKendrick’s feature debut offers more caustic com than rom, it leans hard into the legacy of Helen Fielding’s famously underachieving singleton. Since then, we’ve had Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids and Sophie Hyde’s Animals, and Scrambled certainly belongs in that more riotous subgenre of movies about women behaving badly.
McKendrick takes a different tack to most, though, and its subject matter — how do you prepare for motherhood when you’re not yet fit to be a mother? — is a tough sell, and often feels like raw material for an incredibly personal stand-up set from a comedian that likes to shock with overshare.

The following article contains spoilers for "Community" season 1.
Your acceptance letter from Greendale Community College has arrived! Almost 10 years after we got the last of our "six seasons ... ," we're getting the "...and a movie" part of the "Community" fan rallying cry. From 2009 through 2015, we watched the absurdist adventures of Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Jeff (Joel McHale), Abed (Danny Pudi), Troy (Donald Glover), Annie (Alison Brie), Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), Pierce (Chevy Chase), Dean Pelton (Jim Rash), and Señor Chang (Ken Jeong) at Greendale. Perhaps you, like me, did several rewatches during the early parts of the pandemic as well.
If I were to ask you about the first episode that comes to mind when you think of "Community," it's likely either going to be the one with the "darkest timeline," which we are clearly living in, or the first paintball episode. All the way back in 2010, before the dark times (and...

Lena Dunham had “Girls.” Amy Schumer had “Trainwreck.” And now, Leah McKendrick has “Scrambled.” The filmmaker and star behind the dramedy “Scrambled” shines in this coming-of-age fertility saga, which chronicles an aimless 34-year-old who decides to freeze her eggs amid the onslaught of weddings, bridal showers, and babies her peers are suddenly throwing.
The film follows Los Angeles native Nellie (McKendrick), whose best friend Sheila (“Saturday Night Live” standout Ego Nwodim) is getting married. Gone are their days of doing coke together and partying without consequence: Sheila is pregnant and tying the knot, while Nellie gets stuck rolling on ecstasy by herself at the reception.
That’s where she crosses paths with her friend group idol Monroe (June Diane Raphael) who informs Nellie that becoming a mother at age 40 was the most painful experience of her life. With over $50,000 sunk into IVF to produce daughter Zophia, Monroe warns Nellie that...

Gangster movies reached their height of popularity in the 1930s with classics like The Public Enemy, Scarface and Little Caesar. Audiences were drawn to the genre's anti-heroes and vigilante justice that typically set the powerful and wealthy as the source of crime or corruption. The genre was revitalized during the New Hollywood movement with most notably Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece, The Godfather.
