In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Survivors", the U.S.S. Enterprise discovered a mystery. On the planet Delta Rana IV — otherwise uninhabited and whose surface was devastated by an ancient cataclysm — a single house sat. Beaming down, the Enterprise crew found a well-kemp lawn, a large white home, and a kindly elderly couple named Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge (John Anderson and Anne Haney). While polite and welcoming, the Uxbridges are cagey about their circumstances. How are they the only people alive on the whole planet, and how can they merely enjoy teatime and lawn mowing without acknowledging their utter isolation?
Eventually, of course, the truth would come out. Kevin Uxbridge was, in fact, a member of a species called the Douwd, a species of pure energy, possessed of godlike powers. He transformed into a humanoid and fell in love with Rishon, living with her in connubial bliss for years.

Netflix’s Wellmania is leaving the gym for the final time, its star Celeste Barber has said — and she isn’t happy about it.
Barber posted an update on Instagram revealing that she has been informed the show will not be returning for a second season. The first debuted in late March.
“Netflix said it’s something about numbers. Sure. I thought it smashed it but I don’t understand how it works,” she said.
“Thank you for the love and support around the show. It was so fun, we had such an excellent time and the way it was received was so overwhelming. I’m bummed that I can no longer explore that excellent character of Liv Healy, and I know a lot of you saw yourselves in that character and wanted to see more, but this industry is kinda bullshit.”

Three years into its local production effort in Australia and New Zealand, Netflix has greenlighted two new series, one feature film and one full-length documentary from Australia.
These are in addition to previously announced renewals of teen series “Heartbreak High” and “Surviving Summer” and the go-ahead for prestige book-to-series adaptation “Boy Swallows Universe” and kids animation “Eddie’s Lil Homies.”
Set in the Australian Outback, epic succession tale “Desert King” revolves around billionaire miners, traditional owners, cowboys and desert gangsters fighting over the world’s biggest cattle station the size of Wales. It’s a hot, dusty, sexy Outback Western with guns and helicopters.
It is directed by Greg McLean and created by Tim Lee and Ben Davies, with production by Paul Ranford. The series is a co-production between Easy Tiger and Ronde.

There was every reason to expect "Club Paradise" would be the comedy smash of Summer 1986. Harold Ramis was two-for-two as a director thanks to "Caddyshack" and "National Lampon's Vacation," and scorching hot off the blockbuster success of "Ghostbusters." Ramis had reunited with his "National Lampoon's Animal House" collaborator Chris Miller to hammer out the story, and hooked up once again with his "Caddyshack" co-writer Brian Doyle-Murray for the screenplay. And then there was the cast: Robin Williams, Peter O'Toole, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Robin Duke, and Mary Gross. How could a film stuffed with this much comedic talent possibly miss?
Aside from Ramis and Levy playing a couple of hapless, horn-dog tourists who inadvertently score a trash bag full of marijuana, just about nothing works in "Club Paradise." The notion of a retired Chicago firefighter (Williams) starting up a ramshackle Caribbean resort with his disability money sounds promising,...

By the early 1980s, Hollywood thought it had Robin Williams pegged. Based on four mostly successful seasons of "Mork & Mindy" and two explosively funny HBO specials ("Off the Wall" and "An Evening with Robin Williams), he was a whirling dervish of hilarity who existed to light up your living room. He was easily one of the best, most agile-minded comedians on the planet, but his talent was specialized. If you wanted to hear Elmer Fudd sing Bruce Springsteen's "Fire," Robin Williams was your man. No one wanted to see him straitjacketed in a dramatic role.
Paul Mazursky believed otherwise. Though the writer-director of comedic character studies originally conceived of "Moscow on the Hudson" as a star vehicle for ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, who was to play a Russian ballet dancer who defects during a stop in New York City, he quickly adjusted the screenplay for Williams when Misha passed.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Netflix VP of Italian Originals Eleonora “Tinny” Andreatta. When Netflix hired former Rai director Eleonora Andreatta in 2020 as vice president of Italian Original series, it was a monumental coup for the mega-streamer and a clear sign that the company was taking its presence in Italy very seriously.
Andreatta was seen as the most influential commissioning editor in Italy. Her distinguished 25-year career at public service broadcaster Rai saw her deliver around 500 hours of TV drama per year across its three main...

Gaumont, the venerable French film and television group behind “The Intouchables” and “Lupin,” is launching in Italy with Marco Rosi, an industry veteran joining from Lux Vide, and a bullish first slate.
The company is already well-established in the U.S., the U.K. and Germany. Its expansion in Italy represents a logical step in Gaumont’s global strategy since the country ranks as a key European market and boasts a fertile ground for content creation.
Rosi, who was Lux Vide’s head of international co-productions and worked on prestige Italian series such as “Medici,” “Devils” and “Leonardo,” has been appointed general manager of Gaumont’s Italian operation. As such, he will lead a dedicated team across development and production and will report directly to Christophe Riandee, vice CEO of Gaumont. A few weeks before Banijay announced its $2.2 billion takeover of Endemol Shine last year, Endemol Shine International’s esteemed distribution chief Cathy Payne stepped down from her role. Her resignation was not directly related to the takeover, she says, but as the months rolled on with the mega-merger, Banijay founder Stéphane Courbit and its CEO Marco Bassetti (whom Payne had previously worked with at Endemol) knew they’d need a seasoned exec who could manage what is now a monster 110,000-hour catalogue of content and global brands including Big Brother and MasterChef.
With Payne’s near 30-year affiliation with Endemol and its subsidiaries, she was the most natural fit to manage the merged distribution engine and across the subsequent months they managed to woo her back into new globe-straddling super producer.

When stars collide from CBS’ three marquee reality shows, you can bet there’s smack talk about whose show is tougher/better/the best. That’s precisely what happens at the starting line on “The Amazing Race 31,” the reality showdown installment between “Race,” “Survivor” and “Big Brother” alums.
In a sneak peek, via Entertainment Weekly (watch below), Phil Keoghan, touting the “first ever showdown” between alums from the three shows, asks who has the edge over the others. He knew exactly what he was doing with that one.
“Oh, the Survivors do!” Rupert Boneham shouts. “The Survivors in general are very tough.”
Naturally, the racers weren’t going take that one sitting down on their own turf. “We’re not sitting on an island for 40 days; we’re running around the world,” retorts Jj Carrell, who’s racing again with his border patrol agent pal Art Velez.

Fifty years ago, 1,500 individuals from 53 countries attended the fifth edition of MipTV at Cannes. It’s a small fraction of the estimated 10,500 expected this year, but organizers in 1969 were ecstatic at the turnout. They were also ecstatic to welcome celebs such as Harold Robbins, plugging “The Survivors,” starring Lana Turner.
On April 30, 1969, Variety reported that the hour-long drama was budgeted at “a new all-time high of $300,000 per episode.” Robbins was hot stuff in the 1960s as he virtually invented sex-and-wealth blockbuster novels with “The Carpetbaggers” and “Where Love Has Gone.” In addition to his Mip-promoted “Survivors,” various companies were planning adaptations of four Robbins works, including big-screen projects “The Adventurers,” “The Inheritors” and “Stiletto,” plus the TV-targeted “79 Park Avenue.” That quartet represented a total investment of $36 million.

If you are a Trekker with a spare $5.695 million, you could acquire a cool Star Trek:The Next Generation souvenir.
A Malibu, CA home that was the centerpiece of a Sng season three episode called The Survivors is on the market. In the episode, a rescue party from the USS Enterprise answer a distress call coming from a seemingly deserted planet. There, they discover an elderly couple who appear to have survived a world- devastating disaster. Later in the episode, the truth behind their survival comes out.
The Malibu house and its grounds were depicted as surrounded by devastation through the magic of television in the episode.
The actual house was designed by designer Ellis David Gelman, and features circular and triangular windows, as well as dramatic angles. It sits on two acres on the Pacific Coast Highway and has four bedrooms, four baths and an open floor plan highlighted by two fireplaces.

Amy Schumer’s mother-daughter movie Snatched has opened to largely negative reviews – and it’s not the first time a comedian has failed to add humor to a cinematic venture
For stand-up comics, there were always two paths to stardom: become a talk-show host or a create a hit sitcom. If “movie star” is conveniently absent from that equation, it’s because the list of brilliant comics whose genius did not translate to the silver screen is long and filled with some of our greatest talents. Even those who do find success in film – like the late Robin Williams, who won an Oscar and gave a handful of indelible performances – had more than a few false starts early in his career (The Survivors, The Best of Times, Club Paradise).

I spoke with Andrew T. Betzer about his new film, Young Bodies Heal Quickly, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Neal Dhand: Probably for obvious reasons, this film reminds me a lot of your short, John Wayne Hated Horses. Was that the impetus for making it? Did you expand from the original script or write an entirely new one?
Andrew T. Betzer: I feel that all of my shorts are part of a body of work that is reflective of my preoccupations on a whole…both conscious and subconscious. The script for Young Bodies was totally original, but perhaps taking place in the same world as the dad and son from John Wayne. Who knows, maybe they were neighbors? Perhaps attended some of the same re-enactment events?
Nd: Like in John Wayne, Young Bodies Heal Quickly deals with the relationship between an older man and a younger child.

A new season, a return of an old enemy, a dramatic change to a relationship, and a very surprising casting choice made the premiere episode of Doctor Who quite the rollicking ride. Keep your arms and legs inside the car at all times, mind the spoilers, hang tight to your jewelry (especially bracelets), mind the spoilers and here we go…

With Piranha and Humanoids from the Deep getting all the love lately in the news, we'd be remiss if we did not mention two other Corman cult classics that are poised to make their special edition double-feature DVD debut from Shout! Factory.
From the Press Release:
Brace yourself for twice the fun, twice the adrenaline rush, and twice the traction as Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation, is set to release a dynamic duo of Roger Corman classics on one double-feature collector’s edition DVD. August 3, 2010, will see the release of Deathsport/Battle Truck Collector’s Edition, which marks the first time Deathsport is being presented in a widescreen format as well as the first-ever DVD release of Battle Truck (released theatrically as Warlords of the 21st Century). This double-barreled dose of high-octane excitement decisively marks the latest summer installment from fan favorite Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series.

Have you seen the new Tron Legacy images (here and here, if not)? Did they make you immediately flash back to the early '80s with glee? You're not alone; many a film blogger got super excited recalling their love for the original Tron while looking forward to the sequel.
Not me.
Sure, I like Tron plenty, and I'd love to think Disney will make our geeky dreams come true with this new installment, but I'm the film cynic. I just can't be hopeful about any modern follow-up to anything from my childhood. Blah blah, George Lucas is to blame, and what not.
Today, as everyone else was remembering that groundbreaking film from 1982, and apparently wetting their pants with excitement, I was instead thinking about a certain comedy released a year later: The Survivors. In the movie, Robin Williams is complaining about how society is going down the toilet and...
