This series was originally planned to be an adaptation of Mirai robo Daltanias (1979). But Toei Animation accidentally sent tapes of Beast King GoLion (1981) to World Events Productions. The producers found that they liked "Go lion" better and adapted it into "Voltron". Interestingly, "Daltanias" included every type of robot that was planned from a series dubbed for Voltron - a lion one like "Go lion" (first season), a vehicle one like Armored Fleet Dairugger XV (1982) (second season), and a human-looking fighter from Lightspeed ElectroGod Albegas (1983) (like the planned-but-unreleased third season.
From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend; the legend of Voltron, Defender of the Universe, a mighty robot, loved by good, feared by evil. As Voltron's legend grew, peace settled across the galaxy. On Planet Earth...
In various instances, the characters change both clothes and hair-styles in between scenes without having adequate time to do so.
At the end of the closing credits, the Black Lion stands up and roars.
In the mid-1980s, CBS FOX Video released four Voltron tapes in Australia. Two of those tapes, titled "Voltron In The Castle Of Lions" and "Voltron Versus The Empire Of Drule", had several scenes cut out by the distributor.
