The life, success and troubles of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by Antonio Salieri, the contemporary composer who was insanely jealous of Mozart's talent and claimed to have murdered him.
That really is Tom Hulce playing the piano on his back in one scene.
Mozart! Mozart, forgive your assassin! I confess, I killed you...
One of the artistic licenses taken is Salieri's self-professed chastity and aversion to women so he could praise God with his work instead. In reality Salieri had already been married for nine years when he first met Mozart (1784) to Therese Helferstorfer with whom he lived with until her death in 1807.
