The owner of a seedy small-town Texas bar discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife. A chaotic chain of misunderstandings, lies and mischief ensues after he devises a plot to have them murdered.
The opening scene with Ray and Abby in the car was shot in a garage. Moreover, three different cars were used for Ray's car in the opening scene.

Marty puts the photograph in the left side of the safe, however Ray later pulls it from the right side of the safe.
Opening credits list the main cast, but none of the crew. All of the crew credits are at the end of the film, starting with Joel Coen as director.
The theatrical re-release and the DVD contain a mock introduction of the film by "Mortimer Young of Forever Young Film Preservation."
