In 1942 California, two young men await induction into the U.S. Marines and say goodbye to their girlfriends.
Director Richard Benjamin tried to use Vaughn Monroe's signature tune "Racing With the Moon" (1941), fitting of the era, but the song did not fit well with the context of the end of the movie, and the use of it was scrapped.
You drink too much.
Henry 'Hopper' Nash/Lou: Pisses me off, pisses me off badly. Because when you drink too much, it makes your brain soft.
Nicky: Lemme, I gotta show you something.
Nicky: Before I started drinking, I could not do that!
Henry 'Hopper' Nash/Lou: Why would you wanna do that?
Nicky: It gives me pleasure!
While sitting at a table talking with Henry, we see Nicky (Nicolas Cage) light a cigarette by striking a match on the back of a matchbook, however in 1942 matchbooks were front-strike until a new regulation in 1973 deemed front-strike too dangerous.
