Leonard Shelby can try to remember Sammy Jankis all he wants, but Guy Pearce would truly like to forget Memento. Despite Christopher Nolan’s film being a breakout for both the star and its director, Pearce insists he gives an absolutely terrible performance in it, even too bad to forget.
Speaking with The Times, Guy Pearce — who earned his share of acclaim for Memento, although most went to Nolan’s screenplay – admitted that his performance as the tattooed amnesiac is one he genuinely despises and it stands as the chief reason why he hasn’t worked with the director since. “…I’m having an existential crisis. I watched Memento the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m sh*t in that movie. I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of Memento earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But...

Guy Pearce recently spoke to The Times as part of his Oscar campaign for “The Brutalist” and remembered getting piled on by members of the industry due to his acting start on the popular Australian soap opera “Neighbours.” Pearce was a cast member from 1986 to 1989.
“I have many feelings about that show,” Pearce said. “In the old days you were either a theater actor or a film actor, and if you got stuck in a soap you were the lowest of the low — but what an opportunity. I had no clue what I was doing but learnt a lot. When young actors ask me for advice, I shrug and say, ‘Get lucky?’ Because I got lucky.
“That said, it really was frowned upon,” Pearce added of “Neighbours,” which also served as a launching pad for talents like Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie. “I did a play a year after I...

Actors are typically known to be a little hard on themselves, with many avoiding watching their final, cut-together performances at all, but Academy Award nominee Guy Pearce is happy to engage with a little self-evaluation. Well… not exactly happy.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, the Australian actor reflected on his work in Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending crime thriller “Memento” and the “existential crisis” that was brought on from revisiting it in a recent viewing.
“I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” Pearce said. “I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did. And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again?...

Daniel Goddard got suited up for a cryptic post on social media, and now fans are buzzing about what The Young and the Restless alum is up to. Could he be stepping into a new role on another soap? Or is there a completely different twist to this mystery?
Back In Action?
Adding to the intrigue, Goddard recently shared a teaser about an exciting opportunity. “So I got a phone call the other day from someone that I highly admire and respect. And they asked me if I could take a look at something. So here I am, walking in the rain. But the only problem is the script is getting wet.” The million-dollar question now is, did he love what he read? And more importantly, does this mean he’s gearing up for a return to our screens? Judging by his latest post, it sure looks that way!

While preparing for his role as a titan of industry in Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” Guy Pearce had a specific image in his imagination. It was of a trophy hunter standing next to his prized kill, a lion or tiger or rhino, so proud of himself for having tamed nature.
“I was struck by the idea of recognizing something beautiful in the world and then feeling the need to destroy it,” Pearce said. “Or the need to control it as a way to feel less powerless. The psychology behind that is so fascinating and horrible to me.”
Pearce’s character in the film, the stately-named Harrison Lee Van Buren, is one of the year’s most intriguing creations. He’s not a trophy hunter in the literal sense, but a rich, immoral rogue who’s also dashing and cultured within the film’s 1950s Pennsylvania setting.

Guy Pearce has come a long way from his days on the Aussie soap opera, Neighbours, to his newest film, The Brutalist, for which he’s receiving major accolades. When reviewing The Brutalist, our own Chris Bumbray said, “Pearce, in particular, has never played a role like Van Buren, with him hiding his sadism behind a polished mid-Atlantic accent similar to the one used by John Huston when he played one of the screen’s great villains in Chinatown. Pearce plays him as a man of great charisma but little in the way of scruples. Yet, he’s not two-dimensional; he is also capable of great compassion, even if it comes with an asterisk.”
And while the scope of The Brutalist is grand in its own right, it’s still a small movie when compared to big studio blockbusters. GQ recently profiled Pearce and the actor reflected on his attempt...

Australian soap opera icon Ian Smith, who has played Harold Bishop on Neighbours for over five decades, has revealed he has terminal cancer and will be leaving the show for good. Speaking to Australia’s 10 News First, Smith confirmed he had filmed his final scenes on the long-running soap following his diagnosis of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, a rare form of lung cancer. “I found out a few months back that I have cancer. I have a very aggressive, non-fixable cancer. They expect me to die,” Smith shared. The cameras also followed Smith during his final day on set, where he said, “It isn’t just my last day in Neighbours, it’s my last day of work.” Smith joined Neighbours in 1987 and has appeared on the soap on and off for over 50 years. The beloved drama, which now airs on Amazon Freevee, has launched the careers of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars,...

Given the number of indelible performances he’s given since breaking out world-wide with only his third big-screen appearance—The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994—it’s astonishing that Guy Pearce doesn’t have an awards shelf creaking with the weight of career-affirming statuettes. That could change after Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, an epic drama (complete with 15-minute intermission) co-written with Mona Fastvold, in which an emigrant Hungarian architect, László Toth (Adrien Brody), seeks political asylum, and a creative outlet, in post-war America. As the ultra-rich Harrison Lee Van Buren, an apparent philistine who becomes Toth’s artistic champion, Pearce steals the show.

Margot Robbie and Will Smith's crime movie, which made over $158 million at the box office, becomes a global Netflix hit nine years later. Two of the biggest stars of their time, Smith rose to fame playing a fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and transitioned to blockbuster movies during the 1990s, starring in Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, and more. He started garnering critical acclaim during the 2000s, earning Oscar nominations for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, though he didn't win the award until King Richard in 2022.
Similarly, Robbie started her career on television with Neighbours and Pan Am, but broke through with a standout role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and collaborated with more acclaimed directors on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. It took a while, but it’s finally happened: Amazon is shutting down Freevee, its free, fully ad-supported streaming service. As it turns out — and as we pointed out in January — there was just no point in having two ad-supported streaming platforms.
An Amazon spokesperson said the company has “decided to phase out Freevee branding.”
“There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of Fast Channels — all available on Prime Video,” the spokesperson continued.
You can read the full statement toward the bottom of this story if you’d like to — fair warning, it includes a lot of throat-clearing.

On Tuesday, Amazon announced that it would “phase out” Freevee, its ad-supported video-on-demand streaming service. It is perhaps best known as being the original home of “Jury Duty,” which received four Emmy nominations in 2023 for Best Comedy Series, James Marsden as Best Comedy Supporting Actor, Mekki Leeper as Best Comedy Writing, and Best Comedy Casting. The mockumentary was designed to be a one-off, so a second season was never ordered.
Amazon Freevee will shut down “over the coming weeks,” according to our sister site Deadline. Its content has already migrated over to Prime Video, a paid service. But if you aren’t a Prime subscriber, don’t worry — new episodes of Freevee shows will be available there at no charge. Besides “Jury Duty,” some of Freevee’s original programming includes “Bosch: Legacy,” “Judy Justice,” “Neighbours,” “Tribunal Justice,” and “America’s Test Kitchen: The Next Generation.”

In the nearly four decades since Kylie Minogue’s debut, the Australian soap actress turned international pop star has released 16 studio albums and, thanks to the recent success of “Padam Padam,” racked up an impressive 35 Top 10 hits in the U.K. Her career trajectory, however, wasn’t always assured.
After her initial breakout success on both sides of the Atlantic, with a cover of Little Eva’s “The Loco-Motion,” Minogue struggled to maintain interest among U.S. audiences. By the mid-1990s, she was eager to shake off her bubblegum-pop image, collaborating with the likes of Nick Cave and Towa Tei, and taking more creative control with the experimental Impossible Princess. The album flopped, but a turn-of-the-century renaissance found the singer embracing her dance-pop roots and cementing her status as a gay icon.

House is celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall so what better time to check in on how old the cast of the Fox hit was then and now!
Premiering on Nov. 16, 2004, House centered around Gregory House, an absolute medical genius with a Sherlock Holmes ability to unravel medical mysteries that baffled other doctors. However, thanks to pain from a blood clot in his leg that had him relying on a cane, House was also an arrogant, selfish, cynical jerk insulting everyone around him.
The show became one of Fox's biggest hits of the decade, running eight seasons with Laurie earning two Golden Globes and several Emmy nominations. It also boosted many of its cast to future stardom. So how old were the actors then and now?

Binge’s record-setting drama series Strife has begun shooting its second season.
The Asher Keddie-starring show became Australian streamer Binge’s biggest original series premiere last year, prompting execs to set up a writers’ room for Season 2, as we revealed in January. Production is now underway in Sydney.
The comedic drama follows Evelyn Jones (Keddie), a modern, imperfect woman and publisher, on her journey from lounge room blogger to becoming a force in women’s media. It was inspired by Australian media personality and journalist Mia Freedman’s memoir Work, Strife, Balance, and is written by Australian screenwriter Sarah Scheller (The Letdown).
In Season 2, Evelyn’s empire is threatened by the arrival of a new women’s website and a troll who calls out her hypocrisy and privilege, making her double guess her instincts when she needs to be on her A game. Her company moves to new offices and ventures into podcasting,...

Is it any surprise that Margot Robbie is the talk of Tinseltown? She has become a cinematic chameleon since illuminating screens with an ethereal blend of talent and charm in 2008’s TV series Neighbours. Even in the quirkiness of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, her presence, albeit brief, left an indelible mark.
Last year, she stepped into the iconic plastic shoes of Barbie under Greta Gerwig’s thoughtful direction, playfully showing range and commitment that defied expectations. Robbie—who is gearing up for Kogonada’s forthcoming drama flick, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey— appears to be making significant strides in her career to become more recognized for her talent rather than just being a pretty face.

Legendary actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke has made history, winning the 2024 Daytime Emmy award for guest performer in a daytime drama series — via his spot on Peacock’s “Days of Our Lives.” At 98, that makes Van Dyke the oldest actor to receive a Daytime Emmy win.

“General Hospital” led night one of the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, winning four prizes — including the outstanding daytime drama Emmy. “General Hospital” won the top daytime drama award for the fourth year in a row.
“Gh” took an early lead as proceedings got underway, including writing, directing and supporting actor performance in a daytime drama series (Robert Gossett as Marshall Ashford). While accepting the honor for daytime drama directing, the show’s team paid tribute to Johnny Wactor, the former “Gh” performer who was recently killed.
Besides Gossett from “Gh,” daytime acting awards were spread out among several shows, with CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” winning two — for lead actress (Michelle Stafford as Phyllis Summers) and supporting actress (Courtney Hope as Sally Spectra). CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” won the drama actor for Thorsten Kaye as Ridge Forrester, who also won last year.

In June 2022, Jason Herbison was on set shooting what was to be the 8,903rd — and final — episode of “Neighbours,” an experience he admits was “very, very emotional.” The cult Australian soap opera — a show he first starting writing for after leaving high school in 1990 and came to oversee as its top exec producer — was coming to a tearful end.
Two years on, almost to the day, and Herbison is now on a short trip to L.A. to see if “Neighbours” — which recently announced that “Selling Sunset” favorite Chrishell Stause is joining the cast — wins a daytime Emmy on Friday from its first-ever nomination.
While the producer describes the remarkable turn of events as “really unexpected and amazing,” the story of how “Neighbours” was effectively brought back from the dead parodies the sort of wild plotline generally only conceived in a daytime drama writers’ room. Usually, it’s soap characters...
