Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent thirty years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.
Melora Hardin was originally cast as Jennifer, but was let go after Eric Stoltz was dismissed, with the explanation that the actress was now too tall to be playing against Fox. Hardin was dismissed before she had a chance to shoot a single scene and was replaced with Claudia Wells.

During the first experiment where Marty first sees the DeLorean, the ramps on Doc Browns van lower. In the first shot, the ramps have wet tire marks as if the car has just been driven into the back of the van from the wet parking lot, but on the next shot of the ramps coming down, they have been wiped clean of tread marks.
For the video release, "To Be Continued" was added before the closing credits. This title has disappeared from the DVD release.
