The actress/producer is set to lead the adaptation of a short story that first originated on Reddit, “I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl,” which was written in 2021 by high school English teacher Joe Cote. The viral short story is now getting a big screen adaptation by way of Oscar-winning “Forrest Gump,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” scribe Eric Roth, with Sweeney starring and producing, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Cote’s story, titled “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family,” centers on a drifter (Sweeney) who impersonates a missing girl ten years after she went missing to rob her family, only to realize it’s a terrible mistake. Here’s a trivia question for everyone: What’s the connection between Star Trek: The Original Series and the movies The Goonies, Throw Momma from the Train, and Scrooged? The answer is… Logan Ramsey, the late, great character actor whose career spanned from 1948 to 1999 and who would have turned 104 on March 21, 2025.
Star Trek fans will recall that Ramsey low-key chewed the scenery as Proconsul Claudius Marcus in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Bread and Circuses.” He’s the character who gave his slave, Drusilla (Lois Jewell), to Captain Kirk (William Shatner), so that Kirk could enjoy “some last hours as a man” before his execution. Sadly, Ramsey died of a heart attack at the age of 79 in 2000.
In addition to Star Trek, he counted among his many theater, movie, and television credits The Devil’s Disciple and The Great Indoors, both on stage; the films Head, Walking Tall, Any Which Way You Can,...

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan addresses being mistaken for Jackie Chan. The Vietnam-born talent started his career as a child actor in the 1980s, getting his debut role as Short Round in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. From there, Quan also had a prominent role playing Data in The Goonies before stepping out of the public eye for several years. His big comeback role was in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which won Best Picture and earned Quan a win for Best Supporting Actor.
In an interview with Wired, Quan discussed being mistaken for Chan. The question came about in a Wired "Autocomplete Interview," where he was in the hot seat to address commonly Googled questions about himself. One of the commonly Googled phrases said "Ke Huy Quan and Jackie Chan." Laughing, the actor explained how he is constantly mistaken for Chan. In a gracious response, Quan...

Anthony and Joe Russo, the Russo Brothers, have directed some of the biggest movies of all time, with their film Avengers: Endgame coming in second place just behind James Cameron’s Avatar – and on March 14th, the Netflix streaming service released their latest film, the robot adventure The Electric State. The film topped the English films chart on Netflix over its debut weekend – but managed to do so with a surprisingly low number of views. The Electric State reached #1 with 25.2 million views, which pales in comparison to the debut numbers of recent hits like Back in Action (46.8 million views) and Carry On (42 million views), but is slightly higher than last year’s release of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Still, this is the third Millie Bobby Brown-led film to debut at #1 for Netflix, following last year’s Damsel (which got started with 35.3 million views) and 2022’s Enola Holmes 2,...

Jenna Ortega, star of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wednesday, and 2022's Scream and its sequel, Scream VI, has revealed the next iconic franchise she would love to join, and it's a beloved '80s horror classic. Speaking to IMDb on the SXSW red carpet for the premiere of her new movie, A24's Death of a Unicorn, Ortega shared her hopes of one day sharing the screen with the monstrous Mogwais from the Gremlinsmovies for a feature film revival, which, at this point, is 35 years on from the chaotic creatures last cinematic outing.
The revelation came in a video (below) when Ortega was asked about which mythical creature from her childhood she would like to see have a moment in the spotlight again. Perhaps not the best to be exposed to bright lights, but the actress landed on the scene-stealing furballs from the Gremlins franchise. "You know what I used to love as a kid?...

In his latest project collaboration, Emmy Award-winning set and celebrity interior designer James Pearse Connelly has announced the restoration of the legendary Walsh House from the 1985 cult classic The Goonies.
The project, spearheaded by Connelly alongside the new homeowner and devoted Goonies superfan, Behman Zakeri, aims to bring the iconic house back to its 1980’s movie glory in time for the film’s 40th anniversary on June 7, 2025.
The house, located in Astoria, Oregon, became the home of one of the most iconic cinematic families, the Walshes, in The Goonies. Nearly 40 years later, it remains a beloved symbol of adventure, friendship, and nostalgia for fans worldwide. Behman Zakeri, a self-proclaimed “Goonie,” purchased the house in January 2023 and tapped the expertise of Connelly, and his design firm JPConnelly, to lead the project in helping bring his bold vision to life, with plans to undergo the major restoration starting in February.

Tina Louise was starring on Broadway with Carol Burnett when producers approached her about a part in a new sitcom. “The CBS casting director Ethel Winant called me at the theater, ‘Do you think you could play this Lucille Ball/Marilyn Monroe-type of character?’” the 91-year-old actress told Forbes. “I said yes.”
The Lucy-meets-Marilyn character was Ginger Grant, the “movie star” who was shouted out in the opening credits of Gilligan’s Island. That character description was enough to make Louise ditch Broadway, but she was in for a rude awakening when she arrived on set. “I got there and the director wanted it to be a more sarcastic kind of character,” she said. “And so, then I didn’t even want to work on it anymore. I told him I wanted to quit.”
The head of CBS intervened, calling Louise in for a meeting. “I explained to him...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film starring Leonardo DiCaprio — which, in quintessential PTA fashion, still doesn’t have an official title — packs a budget that’s not just several time higher than anything the 11-time Oscar-nominated director has ever worked with, but far bigger than his films have ever earned at the box office.
Some reports pegged it at $180 million, but an individual with knowledge tells IndieWire it’s actually $130 million. That almost as much as what Anderson’s most successful film to date, “There Will Be Blood,” made globally in 2007 ($76 million), if you factor in inflation ($143 million).
It’s also way more than the budget of his previous film, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” which seemed like a big gamble, even with $40 million. Turns out, it was: that film only grossed $33 million globally. But though Anderson has moved from MGM to Warner Bros., the same film chiefs gave Anderson both of...

American actor Tate Donovan is most well known for voicing the titular character of Disney’s 1997 film, Hercules. But before jumping into the sound recording booth to bring the mythical Greek demigod to life, Donovan donned an aviator jacket and climbed into the cockpit of a B-17 Flying Fortress in the 1990 film Memphis Belle. The film depicts the experiences of American bombardment squadrons in World War II, following the crew of the Memphis Belle on their last mission flying into Germany.
Tate Donovan plays 1st Lt. Luke Sinclair in Memphis Belle. Sinclair is the co-pilot of the Memphis Belle, and second in command to Captain Dennis Dearborn, played by Matthew Modine. A former lifeguard who dreams of Hollywood fame, Sinclair often butts heads with Dearborn, wishing he could take over command. On February 24, 2025, Puck News stated that Kathleen Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm, would be retiring at the end of 2025. Shortly afterward, every major trade publication and website ran the information as news, treating it as a given. Three days later, Kennedy spoke with Deadline and confirmed that she is not retiring anytime soon.
It was easy to see how the rumors of Kennedy's retirement spread quickly. After 13 years, it would make sense for Kennedy to step down. Despite making some of the most successful films in history, Kennedy was constantly under criticism from certain corners of the internet, which overstepped constructive criticism and full-on harassment. It’s one of the oldest stories ever told, but “The Chosen” is finding success with a very new approach to bringing the episodic Biblical epic to audiences. Originally available to stream on a dedicated app, “The Chosen” chose to premiere its third and fourth seasons in theaters via Fathom Entertainment — an unprecedented move for an entire season of television, in the case of season 4. But the unconventional strategy paid off handsomely, with Fathom grossing $72 million to date through the two “The Chosen” seasons, plus a Christmas feature. Now preparing to roll out the show’s fifth season, “The Chosen: Last Supper,” starting March 27, the specialty distributor is pulling out all the stops.
It’s a last rodeo too for Fathom. The fifth season will be the final one distributed by the company, as producers 5&2 Studios and global distributor Lionsgate recently made a deal for U.S. rights with Amazon...

George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was one of the most anticipated movies leading up to its release in 1999. While fans are still split over the movie, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, there has been a long-standing rumor that Lucas had a cameo. And it's been finally confirmed by former Industrial Light & Magic matte painter Caroleen "Jett" Green.
Green was a long-time Ilm matte artist, and worked on many classic movies, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, The Goonies, and several others.

There is no name bigger in ‘80s sci-fi fantasy films than Steven Spielberg. Though not every one of his productions from Amblin Entertainment had the cultural impact of Gremlins, The Goonies, and Back to the Future, they endured the test of time thanks to their popularity in the home video market. Spielberg’s production of directorJoe Dante’s 1987 sci-fi adventure comedy Innerspace falls right into that category.

The actor, 73, expressed his concerns in an interview with Fox Digital, stating that his outspoken conservatism—especially his support for Donald Trump—has cost him jobs in the past.

There is no question that Star Wars would not continue to exist without Kennedy's leadership. Yet, as a prominent and powerful woman in Hollywood, she has often been the target of bad faith criticism by everyone from Belloni to anonymous, mask-wearing YouTube outrage grifters. But even before...

There's a reason that modern cinema has such an infatuation with 1980s nostalgia; it was an especially fantastic decade for movies. In terms of film, the '80s was a time of diversity and amusement—that 10-year stretch from 1980 to 1989 produced a higher volume of unabashedly fun entertainment than any other period in movie history. Whether it was the spirited whimsy of an adventure movie such as The Goonies or the adrenaline-pumping, high-octane thrills of Top Gun, going to the movies in the 1980s was a truly special experience every time.

From dubbed actors to jarring edits to terrible image quality, watching films on British TV was a minefield in the 80s and 90s…
Saturday the 5th August was a truly magical day on BBC One. Not just because Dale Winton – assisted by the ever-dependable Terry Nutkins – presented a vintage episode of Pets Win Prizes. Or because Tony Robinson presented Stay Tuned!, a thoroughly charming series about the history of animation.
No, the 5th August was particularly memorable because it featured an unusually early screening of shark attack sequel, Jaws The Revenge. Its 6pm air time was so early, in fact, that the BBC wound up cutting out roughly 10 minutes of its gore and toothsome mayhem to keep it friendly for a pre-watershed audience. Never a long film to begin with (roughly an hour and a half), the Jaws sequel which showed that summer evening ran for just 80 minutes.

Practical Magic 2 is in the works at Warner Bros. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will reprise their roles from the original 1998 movie for the live-action follow-up.
Speaking with Variety at Time's Women of the Year event in Los Angeles, Kidman was careful not to reveal too much about the highly-anticipated sequel, saying only that development on Practical Magic 2 was "movie ahead rapidly." After Variety pushed for more information, such as if Kidman had seen a script, the actor playfully remarked, "I'm not answering anymore. You can ask Sandy [Bullock]." Kidman then confirmed that "we're not doing it yet," meaning that Practical Magic 2 hasn't started production, as it "needs a little magic" still before filming can begin.

The news that Kathleen Kennedy will be stepping down as President of Lucasfilm later this year broke this morning, and THR has now shared an update with a list of potential candidates to replace her - and one of the names is none other than current Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.
Star Wars creator George Lucas hand-picked Kennedy as his successor back in 2012 before selling his ownership stake to Disney. Now, for the first time, the Mouse House will pick somebody new to lead the next era of the galaxy far, far away.
Kennedy came in for a lot of criticism over the years for a number of missteps associated with the franchise, but there's no arguing with the huge level of success she managed to achieve, and insiders believe finding a replacement will be no easy task.

Editor's note: Kathleen Kennedy has since given a clarification interview with Deadline, where she said she is not retiring at this time. She is 71, and Kennedy has been in discussions of what a succession would look like. However, at the time of writing, she's not leaving Lucasfilm yet. The commentary in this article about people weirdly celebrating still applies.
Kathleen Kennedy is a woman who needs no introduction. She is one of the most prominent and game changing people who has ever worked in Hollywood. From some of her earliest production jobs like in 1979 as an assistant for the film 1941 to helming one of the biggest media franchises of all time in a Galaxy far, far away, she has built a career spanning over 45 years. Kathleen Kennedy became the president of Lucasfilm in 2012, when Disney bought the company for $4 billion. With original founder George Lucas gone, it fell to Kennedy to chart the next era of Star Wars. Now, after 13 years and a great many highs and lows, Puck reports that Kennedy, who is now 71 years old, will retire by the end of the year.
It will be the end of an era at Lucasfilm, and different fans will tell you whether it was a good or a bad one. Kennedy relaunch the Star Wars film franchise in 2015 with The Force Awakens, which grossed over $2 billion at the box office. Follow-up films The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker were also big hits, but much more contentious among fans. The end of an era will soon be upon us, as a report from Puck says Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy plans to retire before the end of the year. Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair alongside Star Wars creative George Lucas. A few short months into her position, Lucasfilm sold to Disney for $4 billion, prompting Lucas to pack his bags and retire to Skywalker Ranch.
Kennedy made her mark at the studio by relaunching the Star Wars universe with J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the film banked $2 billion globally, the reset was ill-received by many long-time franchise fans. Regardless of online bellyaching, Kennedy pressed onward with two more entries in the core series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

What a year 2025 is proving to be for seismic regime changes. Last week came the official announcement that Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are stepping back from Bond. And now, reports are coming in that Kathleen Kennedy – legendary producer and Amblin co-founder – will be stepping back as President of Lucasfilm later in 2025 as she prepares for retirement. No official announcement has been made, but Puck reports that Kennedy will be stepping down after 13 years of steering the company, a role which saw her lead the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.
Kennedy not only oversaw the return of Star Wars to the big screen in the sequel trilogy between 2015-2019, but also saw the saga move to Disney+ across several streaming series, including The Mandalorian and Andor. She also oversaw the return of Indiana Jones in The Dial Of Destiny. Prior to her work at Lucasfilm, Kennedy produced the likes of E.

The Star Wars franchise is now expected to undergo a major creative change before the end of this year, as long-time producer and president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, plans retirement. While we continue to reel from the James Bond shake-up (not stirred) as Amazon takes the creative reins, it seems that Star Wars will join 007, with Kennedy, who is set to celebrate her 72nd birthday this year, stepping down and a new face leading the beloved franchise into the future.
According to Puck News (and their three sources), “Kathleen Kennedy has informed Disney, as well as friends and associates, that she will exit as Lucasfilm president by the end of the year.” At present, representatives for Kennedy and Disney have yet to comment, but the report claims that Kennedy, who became president of Lucasfilm back in 2012, “was actually planning to leave last year,” before changing her mind.

After more than a decade in a galaxy far, far away, Kathleen Kennedy is charting a course toward retirement. The Lucasfilm boss has told associates she plans to retire by the end of 2025, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. Puck reported the news Monday night.

No genre stretches the imagination to the farthest reaches of possibility more than sci-fi, where the only limit is creativity. It’s a genre built on wonder, exploration and the thrill of discovery. Whether it’s a spacecraft journeying through space or aliens beyond understanding, the allure of sci-fi is universal. Yet, few films manifest youthful curiosity quite like Joe Dante’s Explorers.
Released in 1985, this under-the-radar gem managed to sidestep the blockbuster frenzy of its time to become a cult classic, one that still resonates with anyone – young or old – who has ever dreamed of building a spaceship in their backyard and flying off into the stars. Explorers captures the kind of wonder that only childhood can bring, where the impossible feels within reach. While the film may not have been a huge box-office success, it’s one that stands the test of time as a tribute to the...

Through the story of the religious leader Papá Liborio, Nino Martínez Sosa’s 2021 film Liborio deftly contends with the cultural, spiritual, and political forces of a colonized Dominican Republic. After establishing a Black, self-sufficient community in the rural hills of the San Juan province of the Dominican Republic, Liborio and his followers endured pressures and pushback from the government and occupying U.S Marine forces. The dramatic changes that took place in the D.R. during the early twentieth century revolve around the struggle for independence and power.
Ahead of the film’s screening from February 24-28 at NYC’s Mishkin Gallery, I spoke to Sosa about what it was like to research and shoot this film in the remote mountain villages where Liborism is still practiced today, the effect of colonialism throughout the Caribbean, and how cinema can be a tool for inspiring empathy and change.

Ke Huy Quan recently told The Guardian that one of his most fond memories of making “The Goonies” was an unforgettable prank producer Steven Spielberg played on Harrison Ford, Quan’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” co-star who visited the set during production.
“I was star-struck when Harrison Ford came to visit because I’d made Indy. Spielberg played a big joke on him,” Quan said. “There was a biography out of him that he really hated, so Steven went out and bought about 300 copies, so that when Harrison came to visit and walked on to set, the security guard, the gaffers, the camera equipment people, everybody was reading that biography.”
Quan made his acting debut in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” with “The Goonies” being his follow-up project. Spielberg directed the former. As it turns out, Ford wasn’t the only A-list visitor on set.

Spielberg played a big joke on him,” Quan said. “There was a biography out of him that he really hated, so Steven went out and bought about 300 copies, so that when Harrison came to visit and walked on to set, the security guard, the gaffers, the camera equipment people, everybody was reading that biography.”

Given a boost by Jordan Peele, this hyped ‘lost’ movie from Eugenio Mira about freaky goings-on at a hotel finally gets a proper release
This amusingly overwrought mystery-horror-thriller is both a new release and a reissue all at once. Originally made in 2004, and shown at a few genre-specific film festivals, it never secured distribution. Still, it found a way to get seen on alternative platforms like YouTube and homemade DVDs. Meanwhile, lead actor Corey Feldman (once a child star in the likes of Stand By Me and The Goonies back in the 1980s) was conducting his own under-the-radar campaign on the film’s behalf. After it...
