- Earlier versions of this short open with the original "square logo" that Pixar used prior to working with Disney, accompanied by a brief orchestral fanfare. On the Pixar Short Films Collection Vol. 1 DVD, the square logo is still featured, but without the fanfare.
- A rougher, unfinished cut of Luxo Jr. included as an Easter egg on the first Pixar Short Films Collection DVD. Dated to September 9, 1986, this early "pencil test" is the same as the normal version of the short, but the models are rendered in wireframe and the end credits are replaced with placeholder text cards.
