A French anthropologist specializing in nomadic groups moves to Los Angeles with his wife, and starts following a group of sinister street punks who seem to live and move around in a black van. But they aren't what they seem.
The film's protagonist, Pommier, was originally meant to be played by legendary French actor Gérard Depardieu, but when he declined the role, Brosnan, an Irish actor who was at the time only known for his quite popular TV series 'Remington Steele' (1982 - 1987) about a female private detective who partners up with a former gentleman thief, immediately agreed to play it, believing that in order to avoid being typecast for the rest of his career he'd need to prove that he can play roles other than those of English rogues or gentlemen.
Jean Charles Pommier:
Did you ever have a dream and not know when it started?
Jean Charles Pommier: The old men on Atavak used to tell a tale of the dangers of travelling far... of hunting alone, on the ice. How one might no longer know what was... real.
Jean Charles Pommier: We are so very far from home you know......
When Pommier pulls the developed film out of the sink, it's clearly a 35 mm film strip from a movie with the according single frames. Pommier even looks at it in that orientation. As he was shooting with a standard SLR photo camera, the images should be oriented lengthwise on the strip.
