A pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.
Anthony Michael Hall was originally set to play Pvt. Joker. Hall spent eight months preparing for the role but could not reach an agreement with Stanley Kubrick regarding the salary and the schedule. He was replaced by Matthew Modine. Also Hall was fired for objecting to Kubrick's perfectionist style of directing.
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman:
I am Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your senior drill instructor. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy sewers will be "Sir". Do you maggots understand that?
Recruits: Sir, yes Sir.

The flak jackets worn by the characters were M1969 Fragmentation Vest, while USMC in Vietnam wore M1955 Jacket, with a rope ridge on right shoulder, 12 layers of ballistic nylon in the shoulders and upper back area with doron plates providing protection for the lower torso as well as a distinct, blocky appearance through the fabric.
