Story of the Tampico Stogies, a low minor-league baseball team, and its star player and manager, Stud' Cantrell, as they battle for the league championship amidst the corruption and racism of the American south.
William Petersen declined the offer to star in Platoon (1986) in favor of this film.
Cecil "Stud" Cantrell:
When God made Man, He made him outta string. He had a little left, so He made that little thing. When God made Woman, He made her outta lace. He didn't have enough, so He left that little space. Thank you, God!
The outfield wall inside the stadium reads "Smythe Field", named for the fictional owner of the team, J. Harrell Smythe. However, on an exterior shot showing fans arriving for a home game, the outside wall clearly reads "Henley Field".
