Orphans (1987) Poster

The two brothers Treat and Philip lived alone since they were kids. Interdependent they dwell in a loft house and live on little thefts, until an aging minor criminal moves in with them and takes over the role of a father.

A story about gangsters and violence that takes place in one or two rooms?
Gives us some scope for such a meaty concept. It feels far too small with all the big questions it presents. But I looked at it almost two hours in and realized it never took off and was still finding its footing. It becomes obnoxious and preposterous, as if the entire thing was down from improv sessions. The proxy father son relationship connecting through violence--my problem is maybe the film's wisdom that they deserve love too, and that these outsiders find a strange sort of family in this house in disrepair. But I can't stand the amorality of these sort of crime films. None of them really get their comeuppance, or any sort of judgment at all. The performances swung for the fences, though Finney is that Wellsian/Brando presence where the more it seems they slept-walked through the role, the more the audience sees in him, which is an artform in itself.
