Humans in the Predator franchise outsmart the titular creatures, proving adaptability is key to survival. Prey introduces a unique setting and changes to the Predator's appearance, emphasizing humans' intelligence. Brains consistently triumph over brawn as humans defeat Predators with clever tactics in Prey and other films.
With one brutal scene, Prey establishes that humans in the Predator franchise are far smarter than the titular creators. Serving as the seventh installment in the overarching Predator franchise, Prey adopts a unique setting by unfolding in the Northern Great Plains in 1719. Its change in setting alone sets it apart from all previous installments of the franchise. However, the film creates an even more distinct identity by portraying how Predators hunting down humans in a very specific period in history can give the franchise a much-needed breath of fresh air.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's onscreen team-up with Alan Ritchson needs a cameo from a previous cast mate for a star-studded cast. Sinbad's chemistry with Schwarzenegger in "Jingle All the Way" warrants a cameo in the upcoming film "The Man With The Bag." Despite health issues and TV work, Sinbad's recent appearances spark hope for a cameo alongside Schwarzenegger and Ritchson.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's next movie will be his first in five years, and despite the level of talent involved, needs one cameo appearance from a previous Schwarzenegger movie to truly be special. The new movie in particular will see Schwarzenegger and Alan Ritchson team up in an action comedy that will combine the talents of one of the greatest action movie stars from the past and one of the rising action stars of today. Despite the excitement that Schwarzenegger and Ritchson's onscreen team-up presents, the movie still needs one actor in...

20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox) birthed two of the biggest sci-fi horror franchises in history: "Alien" and "Predator." Both were birthed in an age where practical and optical special effects ruled the day, but as sequels, prequels, and crossovers multiplied over the decades, the effects became increasingly digital in nature.
What's surprising is the "Predator" series almost aborted entirely at launch. The original 1987 movie -- filmed with the working title "Hunter" -- had a troubled production. Money was tight, the titular alien suit proved to be, well, unsuitable, and the production was shut down. Once given a second life, pickup shoots had to fit around star Arnold Schwarzenegger's increasingly busy schedule, and a mad dash to design a replacement title creature resulted in the iconic, dreadlocked, and mandibled design (from the mind of James Cameron) we all know and love to hate.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way.
For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Action movies need to innovate to remain relevant in a crowded genre, blending horror elements to captivate a wider audience. Cult classic action-horror films like Aliens and Predator have stood the test of time, earning them respect as pivotal parts of film history. Compelling characters, intense fight scenes, and terrifying twists make action-horror movies like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead must-watch films.
Fight scenes, violence, and heroic deeds are all expected in a typical action movie, but some utilize aspects of the horror genre to make the scariest action movies out there. Not strictly horror or action, these films blend genres brilliantly to appeal to a wider range of audiences and push the boundaries of what the typical action movie can be. Although horror isn't for all audiences, these films also tell compelling stories and incorporate strong character development to keep the viewer invested.

Prey introduces a new Predator lore rooted in Comanche folklore, setting the stage for a unique direction in the franchise. The Feral Predator's intelligence, hunting skills, and weaponry elevate him above other aliens, drawing from real-life Comanche myths. Prey's reliance on real-world folklore breathes new life into the Predator series, offering a fresh take while honoring its roots.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for Prey.
While the Predator's appearance and mythos explored in 2022's Prey was a much appreciated departure than his more futuristic aesthetic, the original Comanche lore is much more terrifying. With Prey 2 in development, there's a strong chance that audiences will get to see further expansions on the new direction Prey took the iconic Predator franchise in. One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. Here's a roster of "Predator" movies that were once in development but ultimately never made,...

Prey introduced a feral Predator with unique differences, teasing a potential conflict with modern Yautja hunters in future sequels. The feral Predator's appearance, weapons, and behavior suggest a geographical and hierarchical separation within the Yautja species. The feral Predator's presence in a modern Yautja trophy room hints at a possible ongoing conflict or rivalry between the two types of alien hunters.
The 2022 surprise hit Prey introduced a brand-new type of Predator to the franchise, but it turns out that the supposedly new creature was teased many years ago. The deadly hunters that stalk their prey in the Predator franchise are the Yautja, an advanced race of aliens that have collected trophies from all over the galaxy. The deadly Yautja in Prey shares many of the same basic characteristics of the hunters seen in the other Predator movies, but there are a number of noteworthy differences in his appearance and behavior.

Filmmaker Pamela Adlon's "Babes" is about motherhood and friendship and the messiness of growing up and realizing you're less prepared than ever to confront life's difficulties. It's also about bodily fluids. Poop. Vomit. Mucus. Urine. And, perhaps especially, the various liquids of various consistencies produced by a vagina. Its characters aren't grossed out by these fluids. Rather, they're fascinated by them. Amused by them. They talk about them constantly. Some would call this depiction frank, but it's closer to glorious and intentional immaturity — so many things about our bodies, and what our bodies produce, are so awful and foul and inexplicable that if we can't talk about it, if we can't laugh out it, our hellish existences will become even more apocalyptic.
Of course, Adlon is no stranger to direct portrayals of the Stuff We Don't Talk About, which she chronicled in her acclaimed FX series "Better Things." She...

In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

Schwarzenegger's reluctance to do sequels like Commando 2 or True Lies 2 is admirable, but perplexing compared to The Expendables. Despite skipping The Expendables 4, Arnold's loyalty to the franchise is commendable, even if it didn't showcase his talents well. Arnie's rejected Predator cameo might have been a better fit for his iconic status than The Expendables, despite the fun he had with friends.
The Expendables broke an unlikely sequel streak for Arnold Schwarzenegger, and not in a positive way. Following the success of the original Terminator, there was a run of incredible Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies. The star had a knack for picking projects with great hooks, and having them tailored to his unique star branding. From Commando to Predator and even the lesser-sung likes of Eraser, Arnie always had an eye for concepts that tempted audiences into the theater.

Dane Diliegro‘s breakthrough role as the feral Predator in 2022’s Prey marked him as one to watch in the genre space. Now, the 6’8″ actor can be seen going feral on screen once more in Imaginary, as the more monstrous version of Chauncey the Bear.
Imaginary, out now in theaters, is directed by Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf, Kick-Ass 2, Truth or Dare, Fantasy Island, The Curse of Bridge Hollow) and stars DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcon, and Betty Buckley.

A future setting can revive the Predator franchise in a different way & involve the audience in new and exciting ways. Revisiting past successes, such as Prey did with its unique setting, can lead to success & critical acclaim. The near-future-set Badlands may explore thepotential of advanced technology vs. the Predator, offering a fresh take on the series.
While Badlands will be set in the future, the Predator reboot could look to the franchise’s past for one great storytelling trick. The Predator movies have never quite recaptured the magic of the original 1987 cult hit, but the franchise has come close when it messes with audience expectations. The Predator movies that are set on earth in the present day, such as Alien Vs Predator, Alien Vs Predator: Requiem, and 2018’s The Predator, are the most critically derided of the franchise’s outings. How did the man who is best known for his portrayal of a cybernetic assassin in The Terminator become the governor of the state of California? What made him able to go from bodybuilding to acting, and from Hollywood to working in public service? Rewinding even further, what made him decide to leave his birthplace of Austria and relocate to the United States of America?
Well, you can get quick answers to these questions by reading Schwarzenegger’s book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life (2023), which is published by Penguin Random House. In the book, the actor discusses how his own values and beliefs were influenced by his father.

Badlands promises exciting new directions for the Predator franchise, potentially bringing back familiar characters for closure. Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming film could finally resolve the lingering mystery of Royce and Isabelle's fate after Predators. Amidst the sci-fi action, Badlands has the opportunity to provide a proper ending for two iconic Predator survivors.
Dan Trachtenberg's 2025 Predator movie Badlands is set to expand the sci-fi action franchise in exciting ways, and in doing so can also resolve a lingering mystery for long-term fans of the series. Predator is relatively unique among long-running movie series, in that its individual entries rarely involve any returning characters. However, where Badlands is concerned, the movie could be ideally placed to bring some characters back from Predator's past and finally provide some closure for key plotlines.
Although not much is known about Trachtenberg's Badlands project, what is clear is that the movie will push the Predator franchise...

Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming Predator sequel Badlands is set in the future and will feature a new female protagonist. The movie should revisit the hook of 2010's Predators and move the action to a new planet. Trachtenberg's sequel approach will (hopefully) continue the winning streak set by Prey.
Director Dan Trachtenberg is returning to the world of Predator with Badlands, which should revisit a concept last seen in the saga's most underrated sequel. While rival sci-fi series such as Alien or The Terminator tend to revisit the same major characters, the Predator movie franchise is somewhat unique. The concept lends itself well to an anthology approach, so while humans fighting the titular hunters is always at its core, the main cast is always changing. This isn't for lack of trying, since Arnold Schwarzenegger has passed on various Predator sequels, but it does help keep things fresh.

The following contains major spoilers for Alien #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
1979's Alien introduced audiences to an entirely new breed of sci-fi horror. Unsurprisingly, the film was only the first of many to come over the years, with the franchise currently standing at a whopping nine films, including multiple crossovers with the similarly iconic Predator franchise. This is to say nothing of the various novels, comics, and upcoming productions set in the Alien universe. Along the way, there have been numerous attempts to add exciting and memorable new layers to the franchise's mythos, though not all of them have made any real impact, and the latest Marvel epic is just the last to fall victim to the very same fate.

Alien: Romulus star David Jonsson recently teased that the upcoming movie will be "very different" from previous installments in the sci-fi franchise.
Speaking with MovieWeb, Jonsson, who is one of the three leads in Romulus, shared how the sci-fi movie will offer a unique spin on the 45-year-old franchise. "I mean, I'm not too sure what I can say just yet, but I know that... I know that it's very, very, very different. I think Alien was slightly before my generation, in terms of its depth and its impact at the time, but you know, we have such an incredible spin on it," the actor said. "And we had Fede Álvarez as our director, Ridley Scott producing it. It was incredible to work with those people, and opposite Cailee Spaeny, who is just a brilliant actress. I think it's going to be cool. I'm very excited."

Alien: Romulus wisely avoids delving into the murky history of Weyland-Yutani, allowing for a more streamlined focus on horror elements. Previous franchise entries struggled with incorporating Weyland Industries, leading to convoluted plotlines and unnecessary character subplots. By keeping Weyland-Yutani in the background, Alien: Romulus follows the successful formula of Alien and Aliens, prioritizing the Xenomorph as the central villain.
While Alien: Romulus could still fall victim to many of the mistakes made by earlier franchise outings, there is one story flaw that the reboot has avoided even though it plagued two earlier sequels. The Alien movies have a complex, knotty chronology. The first three movies tell the relatively straightforward story of Ellen Ripley, a warrant officer who becomes an action heroine against her will when she is repeatedly pitted against the ravenous Xenomorph. However, when Alien 3’s ending saw Ripely take her own life to kill off the franchise...

A legal fight is brewing over the upcoming Road House remake, with the original film’s screenwriter suing Amazon Studios.
R. Lance Hill, in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in California federal court, accuses MGM Studios and its parent, Amazon, of copyright infringement for refusing to license his 1986 screenplay after he allegedly clawed back the rights to his work. He seeks a court order blocking the release of the movie.
According to the complaint, Amazon instituted a self-imposed deadline to complete the remake. To meet this deadline, which was threatened by the actors strike, the suit claims Amazon resorted to using generative artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of the movie’s actors in violation of the collective bargaining agreements of SAG-AFTRA and the Director’s Guild of America.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said the lawsuit is “completely without merit” and that “numerous allegations are categorically false.

Trachtenberg's upcoming Badlands movie could reveal new Predator monsters in a futuristic setting, expanding the franchise's lore. The movie, set for 2025, will feature a female protagonist and may include space travel to explore alien worlds and creatures. Including more Predator monsters in Badlands would differentiate it from previous installments and enhance the sci-fi action series potential.
Dan Trachtenberg's upcoming Badlands movie has the chance to finally reveal more about the Predator franchise's scariest-looking monster, long after its original appearance. Following his successful reinvigoration of the franchise with Prey, expectations are understandably high ahead of Trachtenberg's continued involvement in the series. While the exact direction his Badlands and Prey 2 movies will take is unknown, some tantalizing plot details set up some exciting opportunities.
Ahead of a 2025 release, concrete story information about Badlands is fairly limited. However, a few important facts hint at the possible direction the movie could take.

The Predator franchise could surpass the $1 billion milestone with upcoming sequels Badlands and Prey 2. Greenlighting two new Predator movies signals how much confidence Disney has in the franchise's future. The success of the franchise hinges on Badlands and Prey 2 being released in theaters.
Disney has two new Predator movies in development, which logically should combine to help the franchise pass a certain milestone. The Predator movie franchise has always been a strange one. The first entry is considered a solid gold classic (as it should), but many of the follow-ups struggled to match its success. Each subsequent outing followed new characters, and each teased a direct sequel that never happened. Hulu exclusive Prey appears to have finally broken that trend, as the prequel received both record viewing numbers and critical acclaim; naturally, Prey 2 is in the works.

After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things finally went into production at the start of the year – but if you were hoping that might mean the new episodes will be available to watch on Netflix by the end of 2024, or even at the beginning of 2025, new cast member Linda Hamilton is here to dash those hopes. While speaking to Business Insider, Hamilton said Stranger Things season 5 will be filming for an entire year!
Hamilton said, “It’s a year of shooting, so I couldn’t be happier. Their season takes a year to shoot, which is just an unheard-of luxury of time. But the size of their day is also so beyond any scale that we’re used to.“

Badlands may finally answer enduring questions about the Predator franchise, introducing a female lead in a futuristic setting. The absence of returning characters like Dutch and Harrigan leaves unanswered questions that need to be addressed in Badlands. Delving into the Yautja's methodology and motivation for coming to Earth could provide crucial insights in the upcoming franchise installment.
Despite being part of the pop-culture conversation for almost 40 years, the Predator franchise still faces a lot of unanswered questions from viewers. In fact, some of the most enduring mysteries around the series stem from the very first film, proving that Predator is not afraid of leaving some plot points unresolved. However, with the release of Dan Trachtenberg's near-future franchise installment Badlands, some of these mysteries may finally get an answer.

Lighting is crucial. Alien vs Predator suffered from being too dark, making it hard to follow the action. The Rise of Skywalker's lazy writing with Palpatine's return felt like a missed opportunity to explore a new villain. Batman v Superman's Martha moment failed to deliver emotion convincingly and derailed the film's potential.
Movies are complex creations with hundreds of moving parts, but sometimes, all it takes to ruin a film is one fatal flaw. For a movie to succeed, it needs a director with a clear vision and strong voice, writers who are powerful storytellers, and actors capable of convincingly performing a role outside their natural selves, and for all of this to effectively mesh together. Of course, there are many other elements, but often, with the bare bones and the foundation properly in place, it can overcome a lot.

The one and only major recurring character in the Predator franchise, Greyback, a Yautja Elder, adds depth and continuity to the series. Human characters like Dutch and Isabelle are iconic but only appear in one film, highlighting the alien hunters' lasting presence. The Predator series' focus on non-human recurring character Greyback emphasizes the Yautja's dominance over mortal humans.
Since most of the installments in the Predator franchise are standalone movies, the series doesn’t have a lot of recurring characters – in fact, the most significant returning character isn’t even a human being. From Predator to Prey, the Predator films typically revolve around an alien hunter coming to Earth, choosing their target, and engaging them in a tense cat-and-mouse battle in the jungle. Even if the hero survives, they don’t usually return for the sequel.
Some of the most popular characters in the Predator franchise have only ever appeared in one movie.

In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.
But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

Alien: Romulus aims to redeem the ailing Alien franchise and may do so by bringing back a long-forgotten character. The movie is a standalone entry and takes place between Alien and Aliens, offering a new story and cast while still referencing other aspects of the franchise. Bringing back Ms. Yutani from Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem would give the series' real villain a new face and continue old themes, despite the controversy surrounding the crossover project.
Alien: Romulus is aiming to get the ailing Alien franchise back on its feet after decades of mediocrity, and one path to success could be through redeeming a long-forgotten character. The Predator franchise has an unwritten rule of not featuring returning characters, except for a minor cameo by Anna in Predator 2. Anna, played by Elpidia Carrillo, is the only character to appear in multiple films in the Predator franchise. The possibility of Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the franchise is exciting because Predator has remained singular in its stories without connecting characters.
An unwritten rule of the Predator franchise has been in place since the earliest days of the franchise, save for a single surviving character exception that took place over thirty years ago. Each of the Predator films has focused on the same kind of alien hunter, stalking a different setting and different prey. This has led its targets to be a wide assortment of characters, from the battle-hardened 80s commandos of Predator to the 17th-century Comanche tribe of Prey (and the upcoming Prey 2.)

A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. Ryan Phillippe (Shooter), Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) star in this “nature run amok” survival thriller, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above. Non-superhero movies have featured exciting team-ups between beloved characters, major stars, and long-running franchises. Examples of successful non-superhero team-up movies include Alien vs. Predator, The Lego Movie, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Effective team-up movies can feature ensemble casts with star-studded lineups or bring together the best comedians for hilarious performances.
In the contemporary movie landscape, there have been countless examples of major team-ups in the superhero genre, but outside of that, in non-superhero movies, there have also been plenty of exciting meetings between beloved characters, major stars, and long-running franchises. While movies such as The Avengers have become synonymous with the idea of a team-up, these types of cinematic events have also occurred within action, animation, comedy, crime, horror, and science fiction genres. With so many exciting pairings between different people and properties, an enjoyable team-up was not exclusive to the superhero genre.

The next Predator movie will abandon the traditional self-preservation techniques used by previous heroes, instead focusing on advanced human technology in a future setting. Moving into the future allows the Predator franchise to explore more sophisticated strategies and potential advancements in human technology against the alien species. Bringing the story into the future offers endless possibilities for the franchise, as it has scarcely explored this setting before.
While the most successful attempts to evade the franchise’s villain involve going back to basics, the next Predator movie will abandon this ploy for a new strategy. Ever since 1987’s original Predator, the human heroes of the Predator franchise have struggled to defeat the eponymous enemy of the series. Not only is the Predator super-strong and agile, but the alien species also have advanced invisibility tech, weaponry, and eons of experience as master hunters. The success of "Prey" has led to another standalone Predator film called "Badlands," directed by Dan Trachtenberg. Little is known about the story of "Badlands" but it won't have any connection to "Prey" and may take place in the future. "Badlands" may continue the trend of having a female lead character and could explore the Yautja hunting humans in a technologically advanced future.
The surprise hit Prey helped revitalize the struggling Predator franchise in 2022, and now the intergalactic hunter is returning in another standalone movie called Badlands. The Predator franchise first launched with the release of the eponymous film in 1987, which saw mercenaries on a rescue mission in South America who take on an alien creature that hunts them for sport. Besides being a hit Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle, Predator also had clear franchise potential that filmmakers couldn't leave alone for the last three decades.
The follow-up, Predator 2, was released...
