- 1956. Detective Jack Cleary has been dismissed from the Los Angeles Police Department on a phony corruption charge. He refuses to join his brother Nick's successful private detective firm. But Nick is murdered and Jack takes over the agency. Young Johnny Betts, a rock-and-roller fugitive from Tennessee who worked for Nick, tells Jack that his brother was killed because of surveillance tapes they had gathered during a divorce case. Detective Charlie Fontana, Jacks former partner, says that a second body was found a short distance from Nick's, along with a weapon that fired bullets into a record promoter named Williams--the man whose wife hired Nick. The promoter was informing the police about mob interests in the record business. Somewhere in the background of these events is an East Coast gangster named Eddie Rosen. When Jack crashes one of Rosen's parties, he finds the widow Williams, the client who hired his brother. Her escort is a flunky for gangster Mickey Cohen. Jack is tempted by the widow. Johnny Betts is tempted to sell the tapes to a crooked record producer. As a final showdown approaches, Jack sees his old partner Fontana checking in with the gangsters.
