It’s hard to consider the release of a piece of entertainment, specifically a DVD and Blu-ray box set, as a culturally significant moment, but then again there are few items quite like the newest release from the team at Kino Lorber.
After a refreshingly successful Kickstarter campaign, Kino Lorber has finally released their groundbreaking collection, Pioneers Of African American Cinema, and to call it one of the year’s best home video releases is to truly understate the sociological import carried within this release.
Silent era and early-talkie cinema, as seen by many a film aficionado, is a deeply problematic world. Primarily helmed by white men, films more than occasionally featured everything from frustratingly cartoonish caricatures of African-American characters (furthering stereotypes like the “Mamie”) to white actors donning black face (of which there is also a great deal within this set as well) in what is seen today as a disturbing bit of racism.

Cloud Atlas (15)
(Andy & Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, 2012, Ger/Us/Hk/Sin) Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent. 172 mins
You've got to admire the ambition of trying to tell six stories at once, together spanning the 19th to 24th century. There are connections and parallels, of course, but also wild variations in tone and effectiveness. The experience is a little like channel surfing between Tom Hanks movies, but it's greater than the sum of its parts.

The Movie Pool takes a long look at the short films of Pixar from their new Blu-ray!
The Set-up
Short films from Pixar, many featuring characters from the studio's feature fims, are presented.
The Delivery
This second collection of short films from Pixar features 12 cartoons in stunning high definition. Many of the shorts were previously available on Pixar home video releases (including "Hawaiian Vacation" and "Air Mater"), and three are Academy Award nominees.
What we get in Volume 2 of the series is an eclectic mix of styles and approaches, and for the most part, it all works well. While some are mildly amusing, others (like "Day and Night") are exceptional, that entertain and manage to be original.
The shorts included in the collection are:
"Your Friend the Rat" Ratatouille's Remy and Emile provide the disgusting yet funny history of rats. Director Jim Capobianco and production designer Nate Wragg provide an optional audio commentary.

The annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase is a great way to support the many local filmmakers who practice their art in our area. Cinema St. Louis, our city’s non-profit cinema-related event planning group, will present The Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase July 8-12. This is the 12th annual presentation, which serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were written, directed, edited, or produced by St. Louis natives or films with strong local ties. The 16 film programs that screen at the Tivoli from July 8-12 serve as the Showcase’s centerpiece. The programs range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmaker. It all ends with a closing-Night Awards Party Thursday July 12th sponsored by Stella Artois from 8 p.m. to midnight at Blueberry Hill‘s Duck Room,...

Ten months ago, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords survived the unthinkable: a bullet to the brain. Now, for the first time since the Jan. 8 Tucson, Ariz., shooting that claimed six lives and left 12 others wounded, Giffords, 41, is opening up about her incredible recovery. In this week's People cover story (with exclusive photos), Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, share personal pictures and an excerpt from their new memoir Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope, written in collaboration with The Last Lecture's Jeff Zaslow. Though Giffords still struggles to speak, she makes herself crystal clear on one point in particular in the book's epilogue.

Toy Story 3 3D Blu-Ray Combo Pack Walt Disney Home Entertainment 2010/Rated G/Running Time 103 Mins List Price: $49.99 – Available November 1, 2011 “What do you think is gonna happen Woody, Andy's going to take you with him to college?” That's a question raised by the old prospector (Kelsey Grammer) in Toy Story 2 and a decade later, the third chapter in the series builds upon it. It's probably fitting that we've all had to wait so long for another sequel to the first full length computer animated film, because time is never on a toy's side, yet the subject makes compelling story telling. Lee Unkrich, who co-directed the previous film as well as Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc., finally gets full directing duties for perhaps one of Pixar's best films. Though not as emotionally powerful as Toy Story 2, this sequel is the darkest and most adult oriented of the three, raising...
