Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

The Story: It is the future (like say – 1989). Robots are now commonplace, being used for everything from manual labor to childcare. But, robots go bad and when they do, the LAPD calls in Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in so-called “Runaways”. When a madman (Gene Simmons) invents a microchip that turns all robots into runaways, Ramsay, and his new partner (Cynthia Rhodes) must put a stop to his evil plan – the fate of the world just may depend on it! Oh, and also Ramsay is afraid of heights. Trust me, that’s important.
The Players: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.
The History: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt by the time 1984 rolled around.

Tom Selleck is one of the most well-known television actors in Hollywood at present. A decorated thespian, Selleck has an arms-length list of accolades to his name. He has appeared in several popular shows, such as the long-running Blue Bloods and Magnum, P.I., playing the titular character, for which he received several Emmy Award nominations. Given Selleck’s standing in the television industry, he is also one of the richest actors around.
Tom Selleck‘s acting genius is not just limited to television, though. He has also acted in movies, such as Three Men and a Baby (1987) and its sequel, Three Men and a Lady (1990), where he played the bachelor architect, Peter Mitchell. Moreover, Selleck cemented his name in pop culture when he played Dr. Richard Burke, Monica Geller’s love interest, on Friends.

Before his iconic role as the protagonist in Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck was the titular central lead in the cult 80s crime drama Magnum P.I. The veteran star’s portrayal of a freelancing private investigator made his one of the biggest superstars on television for 8 seasons of the show.

Up on Variety a few months ago, there was an interesting interview with the German distributor of the Expendables and John Wick movies. Fred Kogel, who runs Leonine Studios, noted that all the top action heroes now, Keanu Reeves, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, and Harrison Ford, are the same ones we had in the eighties and nineties. But with Stallone and Ford in their late seventies, who will be the new action stars when the icons are done with the genre? For his part, Kogel doesn’t believe distributors and studios have done enough to build up a new crop of action heroes, noting that for the older stars, there was “a great deal of identification with the type of the actor, with the physicality of the actor so that you could relate to that.” With CGI-laden superhero movies, Kogel believes that kind of identification is gone. “I think it...

"Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" is not everyone's favorite movie in the franchise, but it is an important one. Not only did it revive Spock after the events of the much-beloved "Wrath of Khan," but it also was an important first as Leonard Nimoy stepped behind the camera to direct the film as well. Before that, Nimoy had only directed select episodes of TV shows like "Night Gallery." But this was his feature directorial debut, and fittingly, it was within the franchise that made him famous. However, it did create a bit of awkward tension with his friend and co-star, William Shatner, who had starred as Captain Kirk since the beginning of the original series.
Nimoy and Shatner had worked together for nearly 20 years by the time the 1984 film rolled around. But with Nimoy behind the camera, the power dynamic was about to change in a meaningful way.

Speculation about a new movie titled Three Granddads and a Baby has gone viral, making some question if the film is real or fake.
It has been quite some time since fans heard from Disney's Three Men franchise, with the duo of Tom Selleck-led comedies (Three Men and a Baby and Three Men and a Little Lady) being remembered fondly nearly 40 years after their release.
There has been talk of a reboot in recent years, but nothing concrete has come of it as of yet.

Have we finally reached peak blockbuster running time? In the last year alone, the space has been flooded with kidney-testing lengths — “Killers of the Flower Moon” (206 minutes and no intermissions allowed!), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (192 minutes), “Oppenheimer” (180 minutes), “John Wick: Chapter 4” and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (both 169 minutes), and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1” (163 minutes) — but there are some signs that this particular worm has turned.
The most significant example is this week’s release of “The Marvels” (Disney), which is the shortest film in MCU history at “only” 105 minutes. “Avengers: Endgame,” MCU’s biggest hit, clocked in at 181 minutes. The four most recent MCU franchise entries were 126 minutes or fewer, with “Thor: Love and Thunder” under two hours. In all, eight MCU films were less than two hours, which makes the difference a matter of degree.

One of the coolest guys of the eighties was Tom Selleck, and everyone absolutely loved him playing the laid-back Thomas Magnum on the classic series Magnum, P.I. Running from 1980 to 1988; the show proved to be a mixed blessing for its star, as Selleck had auditioned to play Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark and was actually chosen to play the part. He had to pass because he had already shot the pilot for Magnum, P.I., and the network wouldn’t let him out of his contract.
While passing up the opportunity to play the whip-wielding archeologist must have stung, Magnum P.I. ran for eight years and was one of the biggest shows of the decade. Selleck became a household name and parlayed his success on the show into a series of film roles (including Best Movie You Never Saw fave Runaway), culminating with the release of Three Men and a Baby,...

In 1989, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier disappointed the box office. Reeling from bad reviews, the film only grossed $49 million domestically from a $33 million budget. That’s a worrying figure for a franchise considering that the previous movie, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, had made a huge $133 million. It likely eventually eked out a profit, but it did badly enough that the studio was looking to reboot the series without any of the original stars by making a Starlet Academy movie. Harve Bennett, the producer of all the films since Star Trek II, thought this would be the way to continue the crew’s big-screen adventures, but Paramount thought differently. With Star Trek: The Next Generation picking up momentum on TV, it became clear that Captain Picard and company would eventually move to the big screen, but, given that the franchise’s 25th anniversary was right around the corner,...

There’s this theory out there that annoys most Trekkies, being that, of the films, only the even-numbered entries are good. This stems mainly from the fact that everyone remembers Star Trek V: The Final Frontier as being the worst movie of the series and ignores that Star Trek: The Motion Picture – while divisive – was a hit, and so was The Search for Spock. However, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is indeed a bad Star Trek movie, and in this episode of Revisited, we’re going to look at exactly what went wrong with something that was clearly a passion project for its star and director, William Shatner.
Jump back to 1986, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was a significant hit. It was the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and earned critical raves. People that didn’t even like Star Trek were down with this earth-bound adventure of the crew of the U.

Disney Channel has served as the launchpad for many stars over the years, from the High School Musical kids to the performers who made it big in shows like That’s So Raven and Lizzie McGuire. While many of these stars went on to distance themselves from Disney in the years following their rise to fame, there are some young actors who have returned to work with the company on various projects. Here are a few of the talented performers who went on to work with Disney even after their early years on the Disney Channel.
Ashley Tisdale achieved mainstream success in ‘The Suite Life of Zack & Cody’
Ashley Tisdale might be best known for her role as Sharpay Evans from the High School Musical franchise, but well before she landed the role, she had earned a strong fanbase thanks to her work in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.

Fatal Attraction — which wheezes back to life as a series starring Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan, premiering April 30 on Paramount+ — began as the 1979 short Diversion, about a one-night stand gone haywire, which writer-director James Dearden fleshed out into a feature screenplay.
With contributions from Nicholas Meyer (writer-director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), Paramount producers Stanley R. Jaffe and Sherry Lansing were convinced they had a viable erotic thriller on their hands. The script tells the story of Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), a married New York lawyer who has what he thinks is no-strings sex with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), a publishing executive, while his wife, Beth (Anne Archer), and daughter are out of town. How wrong he is. Alex quickly becomes dangerously obsessed with Dan and the wife who stands in her way. The rest — from Alex’s “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan” to...

In 1988 Tom Cruise was arguably the biggest star in the world. Top Gun came out in 1986 and was the year’s top-grossing movie. It wasn’t only a hit – it was a cultural phenomenon, and Cruise became a rare kind of movie star. He was a sex symbol for the ladies, but the guys liked him too. Speaking personally, having been born in 1981, I vividly remember owning the VHS tape of Top Gun and playing it on a loop. Cruise was my first concept of a movie star; to kids like me, he was like a cool Big Brother-type figure. He was the guy we all wanted to be with him riding motorcycles, rocking fantastic hair and an attitude which was never too threatening while blasting awesome 80s rock music and having the girls go crazy for him. He was the man, and if any movie ever cemented his big-screen stardom,...

Ask any fan of "The Simpsons" to rattle off their top episodes, and chances are it won't take long before they get to "Marge vs. the Monorail." It's widely regarded as one of the all-time classics in the show's three-plus decades run, and for good reason. It was the brainchild of Conan O'Brien and features several top-notch guest voice actors. Obviously, the big one is frequent "Simpsons" guest Phil Hartman, whose con artist character Lyle Lanley has become iconic for his "The Music Man"-inspired song and dance numbers. But the episode also features an extremely memorable guest turn from a beloved actor from a classic 1960s television series.

John Badham's 1986 comedy "Short Circuit" was a masterwork on cinematic animatronics. The film's main character was a robot, called only Number Five (voiced by Tim Blaney), who was struck by lightning and lost its memory, but somehow gained sentience. Number Five, originally built to be a laser-wielding soldier, idly rolled out of the robotics lab where it was built and into the home of the put-upon suburbanite Stephanie (Ally Sheedy). Stephanie spends the bulk of the film trying to teach Number Five about the fineries of human interaction while providing it with all the raw data she can provide; Number Five can read books in a matter of seconds.

Changing things up is working for Hallmark Channel, as their “Three Wise Men and a Baby” has become the most-watched cable TV movie of the year.
The movie, which debuted on Saturday, Nov. 19 and stars Hallmark’s beloved actors Andrew Walker, Tyler Hynes and Paul Campbell, averaged 3.6 million total viewers. Campbell co-wrote the movie with another network favorite, Kimberley Sustad, who made a cameo.
Hallmark’s most-watched movie of the year was the second most-watched cable program of the week, trailing only behind Paramount Network’s giant hit, “Yellowstone.”

Are you ready for the event of the season?
Yes, I'm talking about the first time three Hallmark Hunks, as they're called, take the screen together.
In Three Wise Men and a Baby, Andrew Walker, Tyler Hynes, and Paul Campbell give brotherhood a try, with a little adorable baby sprinkled on top. What's not to love?
If you read our interview with Margaret Colin about the movie, you know that this Christmas movie leans funny.
And really, you've seen plenty of Hallmark movies, so you probably think that you've seen them go funny already.
Could it really be as funny as I'm suggesting?
What you need to remember is that Three Wise Men and a Baby is a first.
It's the first time that three of Hallmark's biggest male stars -- Walker, Hynes, and Campbell -- share the same real estate, and these guys are having a ball.
Walker stars as Luke Brenner,...

Margaret Colin has hit the Hallmark jackpot with her first movie for the network, Three Wise Men and a Baby.
If you're a fan, you know she starred as Tom Selleck's girlfriend in Three Men and a Baby, so it's a super fun callback, and her Three Wise Men and a Baby role as the mother to three of Hallmark's top actors, is really fun, too.
Most people will be familiar with Margaret from her many other roles in TV and film. She started in soap operas at 19, starring opposite Oscar-winner Kim Hunter on Edge of Night, starred opposite Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman in the blockbuster Independence Day, and more recently had a role on Chicago Med as Carol Conte.
While we connected over Three Wise men and a Baby, I would have been remiss not to get her thoughts on her other work, and Margaret shared her memories freely.

Chris Columbus' 1993 film "Mrs. Doubtfire" would have been the highest-grossing film of 1993, were it not for "Jurassic Park." It was that popular. But whereas "Jurassic Park" has had five sequels and a few TV shows, "Mrs. Doubtfire" has remained a stand-alone phenomenon. The film is a reminder that high-concept, star-led scripted studio comedies were once an enormous box office draw, at least as much as well-moneyed, effects-driven genre fare. Anyone who saw Leonard Nimoy's "Three Men and a Baby" in theaters can back up this claim. These days, such comedies aren't as big business, and they aren't being rebooted with the same high profile (although some are being rebooted).
The premise of "Mrs. Doubtfire" is thus: Robin Williams plays a voice actor and divorced dad named Daniel who is, thanks to his unemployment, unable to see his kids as often as he'd like. His ex-wife Miranda (Sally Field) has...

With recent news of streaming top dog Netflix’s challenges in the marketplace, let’s take a gander at one of its chief competitors: Disney+ continues its ascent among the upper echelon of streaming platforms. Across the first three months of 2022, the House of Mouse continues to make massive gains. The short-lived late 80s animated series gets a satirical yet earnest reboot with sly jabs at the industry and a host of comedians doing voice work
It’s no real surprise that someone was prepped to poke fun at Hollywood’s increasingly aggressive remaking, rebooting and remixing of dust-caked IP, but it’s perhaps more of a surprise to find the joke coming from inside the house. Not just any house either but the House of Mouse, arguably the most egregious offender of all.
But the unending sift of studios trawling though their back catalogues, has resulted in an unusual satire, made even more unusual given the unlikely packaging. The relatively un-hyped release of a live-action-animation-hybrid movie based on late 80s series Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, offloaded on to Disney+, seemed at first glance to be more of the same. But inside the Trojan horse of a lazily inevitable...

Four of this year’s Best Picture nominees are remakes. For “West Side Story,” “Dune,” and “Nightmare Alley,” that meant risky comparisons. For “Coda,” it’s like it never happened.
It’s no secret that “Coda” is an adaptation, but you’ve likely never seen “La Famille Bélier,” the 2014 French film on which “Coda” is based. A massive hit in France, it grossed $55 million — the per-capita equivalent to over $300 million domestic. Worldwide, it grossed $86 million.
And yet there is little evidence that the film ever had any public showings in the United States. In Canada, it screened only in French-speaking regions. (DVDs with English subtitles can be ordered online.)
France is a reliable resource for American remakes, like United Artists’ “The Birdcage” (“La Cage Aux Folles”), STX Entertainment’s “The Upside” (“Intouchables”), and “Three Men and a Baby” (“Trois Hommes et un Couffin”). “Intouchables” was released all over the world.

In celebration of Blue Bloods’ milestone 250th episode — “Guilt,” which airs on CBS Friday, March 11, at 10/9c — star Tom Selleck was happy to answer fans’ questions about his role as Frank Reagan, NYC Police Commissioner and member of a clan dedicated to the justice system. But the star also had plenty more to say about his pride in the long-running hit drama, his favorite episode, and his other projects, including, yes, Jesse Stone. Below, Selleck spills the beans. What does reaching the 250th episode of Blue Bloods mean to you? Tom Selleck: I never thought I’d be lucky enough to do a show that had that long a run. Maybe Magnum, P.I. could have reached that number because nobody wanted to cancel it. I was the guy causing the divorce. I’d done the number one movie [Three Men and a Baby] in the U.S. and I wanted to have a family.

Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

It’s no secret that Kevin Hart is one of Hollywood’s busiest and prolific entertainers, but his latest film “Fatherhood,” showcases Kevin Hart the family man.
In the movie, the comedy star makes a more serious turn for the heart-wrenching family drama based on a true story. Think Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness” meets “Three Men and a Baby.”
“I think it’s a movie that’s going to truly move the needle on so many different levels,” Hart tells Variety, beaming in virtually from Budapest, where he’s filming “Borderlands.” “I’m hoping that is one that’s evergreen, that lasts forever, that people will be able to always go back and look at and get a sense of feel good from.”
The film dramatizes the true story of Matt Logelin, who became a single dad when his wife Liz died unexpectedly shortly after the birth of their daughter Maddy.

Rumors have swirled for nearly a year that busy-as-a-beaver (and newly single) American actor Zac Efron would like to permanently relocate to Australia, where he’s spent much of the last year living in the popular, scenic and surf-centric town of Byron Bay. Now that he’s sold his longtime home in the celeb-saturated Los Feliz area of Los Angeles for $5.3 million, a good bit below the initial asking price of $5.9 million but still a nicely profitable amount over the not-quite $4 million he paid for the hillside home about 7.5 years ago, and dropped $2 million on a vast tract of unspoiled land Down Under, it looks like he just might.
The Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile star’s now former home in Los Angeles is privately squirreled away down a long, gated driveway on more than three-quarters of an acre of hillside property with staggering views that sweep over L.

As the ordinary guy in Police Academy and Three Men and a Baby, Guttenberg was one of the 80s unlikeliest stars – then disappeared. He talks about defying audience expectation, partying with Tom Selleck and Ted Danson and his latest role as a foul-mouthed British gangster
“Steve Guttenberg … in a British gangster film!” sounds like a movie pitch by Alan Partridge. Mr Nice of 80s movies – the actor who embodied friendly normality in films such as Short Circuit, Cocoon and Three Men and a Baby – starring in a weird subgenre of film that is now little more than violence porn and misogyny?
And yet, here we are in 2021, with Guttenberg playing an alarmingly bewigged capo in something called – let me check my notes – Original Gangster. It’s not quite as weird as Donald Trump becoming president of the United States, but it’s not far off.
