The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

In 2017, on the press circuit for his first Hercule Poirot film Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh was asked by French newspaper Le Figaro to name his three favourite Agatha Christie Novels. The actor-director picked Orient Express, of course, and two others: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, published in 1926, and, published a decade later in 1936, Murder in Mesopotamia.
“I like one, Roger Ackroyd, because it’s deep in the heart of England so it’s classic Christie, village green…,” said Branagh. “And the other one because it’s in a super-exotic archaeological dig and she knew those really well so you feel in both of those cases amazing detail. She knows what she’s writing about.”
Christie would know the setting for Murder in Mesopotamia, an archaeological dig in Iraq, having spent several months on expeditions in Iraq and Syria with her second husband, archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan.

"Death and Other Details" is a murder mystery show on Hulu that shares similarities with the poorly performing Hercule Poirot movie "Death on the Nile". Both stories take place on luxury cruises and involve wealthy passengers who could be the murderer, but the new show introduces a unique detective character, Rufus Cotesworth. While Hercule Poirot is a well-established and trusted detective, viewers have yet to fully trust Cotesworth due to his past failures and imperfect record. The show has the potential to further explore his differences and unravel the truth.
Hulu's new murder mystery show Death and Other Details has some striking similarities to a similar Hercule Poirot movie that flopped at the box office. Death and Other Details follows the eccentric detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin) and his reluctant assistant Imogene Scott (Violett Beane) as they investigate a murder aboard a luxury cruise. 2023 was a banner year for horror films from across the globe, which deserve just as much praise and attention as any domestic genre triumph.
In a year that’s had its share of ups and downs at the box office, horror continues to be a top performer and one of the most consistent sources of entertainment. Superhero fatigue continues to set in and the ballooning budgets of major studio blockbusters have started to seem more like a curse than a kindness. The film industry adapts accordingly and figures out what audiences want.
However, horror movies have never been more popular and 2023 has been a goldmine of blood, guts, and gore. This year alone has featured grandiose franchise sequels like Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, and Saw X. Even Hercule Poirot has gotten into the horror game with A Haunting in Venice. Additionally, weird and wild local horror releases like Skinamarink,...

It’s been a robust year for genre film. Horror’s continued dominance at the box office has effectively spilled over into fantasy, thrillers, and sci-fi in ways that defy easy classification. So much so that it’s difficult to overlook the 2023 genre movies that employ horror techniques, draw inspiration from our favorite genre, or simply dabble in it.
These horror adjacent movies may not fully plunge into the genre, but they’re also not afraid to wear their horror influences on their sleeves, whether through style or bloodletting.
Here are the top ten best horror adjacent movies of 2023.
10. A Haunting in Venice
Director and star Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot gets reeled into another whodunnit, but this time Branagh leans into the Halloween setting with stunning style to infuse this murder mystery with atmospheric mood. A Haunting in Venice looks and feels like a vintage ghost story, complete with nods to Edgar Allan Poe.

From Sherlock Holmes to Inspector Morse, there are numerous long-running and binge-worthy series that showcase the charm and intrigue of British murder mysteries.

Olm's anime adaptation of Agatha Christie's novels is surprisingly family-friendly and accurately portrays Poirot and Marple's famous mysteries without being too grisly. The anime jumps between Poirot and Marple's best cases, occasionally taking creative liberties, but still remains the only anime adaptation of Christie's novels. While the addition of the new character Mabel West may feel unnecessary, the anime's long runtime allows Christie's stories to fully unfold without any trimming.
While murder mysteries might not be regarded as family-friendly, Oriental Light and Magic's Agatha Christie's Great Detectives Poirot and Marple is a surprisingly able adaptation. While aimed at children, the anime still accurately depicts Christie's most famous novels without becoming too grisly. For mystery fans who want a soft touch when introducing the titular great detectives to a younger audience, Olm surprisingly has it handled.

Happy holidays! The Christmas season is about spending time with loved ones, waiting for Santa Claus and, of course, festive music. There are certainly a number of acclaimed Christmas movies out there, especially in the throwback 1990s decade, but one could argue nothing beats musical performance when it comes to decking the halls. And on that note, this year’s Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir holiday special is now in its 20th year on PBS, where it's said to be "the No. 1 primetime holiday show each year."

In the bustling landscape of this week’s cinematic offerings, a prevailing festive spirit echoes through the corridors of new releases, as Christmas-related content takes center stage, an anticipated trend set to persist throughout the weeks leading up to the joyous culmination of the holiday season. As we delve into the intricacies of “Leo” below, it’s worth noting that this week boasts a notable array of crime thrillers, injecting an exhilarating dose of suspense into the cinematic landscape.

Agatha Christie's novels continue to be adapted into TV series and movies, appealing to both fans and newcomers to her works. Some of the best Agatha Christie movies are non-English adaptations, reflecting the global popularity of her stories. Kenneth Branagh's Poirot movies, such as Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, feature star-studded casts and visually stunning settings.
Agatha Christie is one of the best-known crime novelists ever, and Agatha Christie movies have always been in demand since the advent of Hollywood cinema. She published over 125 written works, including 74 novels, selling more than two billion copies, making her the second best-selling fiction author ever. The first Agatha Christie movie came in 1928 with the first non-English language adaptation coming a year later. Foreign filmmakers have taken a particular liking to Christie's work. Of more than 30 film adaptations, 14 are non-English adaptations. The best Agatha Christie movies are...

Kenneth Branagh's Poirot film series could reach its end due to disappointing box office performance, leaving few options for future Agatha Christie film adaptations. The reinvigorated approach in the latest film, A Haunting in Venice, with a sidekick and supernatural elements, failed to appeal to audiences despite positive reviews. The dwindling popularity of Branagh's Poirot trilogy suggests that major Agatha Christie film adaptations may be on hiatus, and future adaptations will likely be limited to television unless there is an effort to attract younger audiences.
If Agatha Christie had lived to see Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot film trilogy, specifically Branagh’s determined performance as Christie’s inimitable fictional Belgian detective Poirot, it’s hard to imagine that Miss Christie, who died in 1976 at the age of eighty-five, wouldn’t have, at the very least, given Branagh high marks for sheer effort and style.

Kenneth Branagh's adaptations of Agatha Christie's Poirot stories could be better suited for streaming TV, allowing him to take his time and avoid rushing the stories. Streaming platforms like Netflix are attracting big names to short-run series, making it more likely that Branagh could bring in top talent for a full season of Poirot episodes. Branagh should stay true to the original Agatha Christie stories and resist adding his own flair, as the original tales are well-crafted and still relevant to modern audiences.
Kenneth Branagh has had a long and storied career in film. He is an actor, writer, producer, and everything in between. Therefore, people were excited when he chose to take on Agatha Christie's Poirot stories. He has now made three of them to varying levels of acclaim. But what if he was given a different platform on which to present his adaptations?

The samurai Mizu stands backed up to the edge of a seaside cliff, flanked by four master swordsman known as the Four Fangs. It is seemingly a no-win scenario for the title character of Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai. But for eight riveting minutes, Mizu turns this dangerous terrain into an advantage, defying the laws of physics multiple times while carving the Fangs up into little pieces. The closing shot of the sequence may as well be a painting, with the final death blow being delivered while a massive wave crashes in the background,...

The Marsh King's Daughter had a disappointing opening weekend at the box office. Despite being directed by Divergent's Neil Burger and starring Daisy Ridley, the movie failed to make an impact at the domestic box office. It only earned $849,000 in 1,055 theaters, failing to even make it onto the box office Top 10 chart.
The Marsh King's Daughter has a dismal opening weekend at the domestic box office. The movie, which is based on the 2017 Karen Dionne book of the same name, was directed by Limitless and Divergent's Neil Burger. Kenneth Branagh's A Haunting in Venice's time jump in 1947 prevents the adaptation of three Hercule Poirot movies based on Agatha Christie's timeline. The omission of World War II in the franchise may be intentional, as the previous installment, Death on the Nile, already dealt with the trauma of war. The future of the Hercule Poirot movies remains uncertain, but potential options include adapting Elephants Can Remember, Curtain: Poirot's Last Case, or exploring new storylines while incorporating elements from the source material.
The time jump used in Kenneth Branagh's A Haunting in Venice makes at least three Hercule Poirot movies impossible now, so long as the director and star plans to follow author Agatha Christie's timeline. Following Branagh's adaptations of Christie's more well-known whodunits Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, the filmmaker tackled a less popular Poirot novel: Hallowe'en Party. Knives Out's success shows that audiences crave original stories, which the recent Poirot franchise lacks. The modern setting of Knives Out makes it more relatable and engaging for audiences compared to the dated time period of the Poirot movies. Kenneth Branagh's Poirot movies feel unoriginal and less interesting compared to Knives Out, which incorporates fresh twists and varied tropes to keep audiences engaged.
Knives Out is one of the most successful, recent movie franchises, and its take on the "whodunit" genre is beating the establishing Hercule Poirot IP in terms of pop culture impact. Each of Rian Johnson's Knives Out movies tells the story of a different case solved by Benoit Blanc, the southern detective known around the world for his crime-solving capabilities and unusual methods. The line between animation and live action is brilliantly blurred in “Blue Eye Samurai,” the 2D/3D hybrid animated action series set during Edo-period Japan. It’s “Mulan” meets “Game of Thrones,” in which Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) — a mixed-race, lone-wolf warrior — lives in disguise seeking revenge on the four white men who made her a “creature of shame”.
“Blue Eye Samurai” represents a bold, cinematic leap in TV adult animation that’s driven by the period-authentic scope and spectacle. All eight episodes are treated as a different genre, and the graphic violence and sex are enhanced by the stylistic poetry of the animated form (the characters are inspired by Bunraku puppets and the visual style by ukiyo-e woodblock prints). Crucially, though, its exploration of race and gender through the dark lens of anti-hero Mizu is refreshing and relatable.

A Haunting in Venice is the latest Poirot mystery film by Kenneth Branagh, based on Agatha Christie's novel. It adds supernatural elements and explores Poirot's mental health. Branagh's Poirot films tackle mental health conditions without agenda, portraying Poirot as a progressive character. The films balance great storytelling with realistic portrayal. Poirot's character quirks, such as his obsession with symmetry and his mustache, are trauma responses stemming from his experiences in war. Mental health and Ptsd play a significant role in his character development.
A Haunting in Venice is the latest of Kenneth Branagh's Poirot mystery films, where he plays the legendary detective himself. It is based on a novel called Hallowe'en Party by the legendary Agatha Christie, who is considered one of the greatest mystery writers of all time. A Haunting in Venice sticks to Christie's tale while adding some extra supernatural elements and the underlying story of Poirot's mental health.

A Haunting in Venice, which has just hit VOD and Hulu, updated the Agatha Christie novel for a supernatural thriller where an old palazzo brings together friends, enemies, and a Belgian detective to face secrets that are darker than the surrounding shadows. Like with the previous Kenneth Branagh-centric adaptations, there is another version out there that you can watch to compare. ITV’s long-running Agatha Christie’s Poirot adapted every story with the Belgian sleuth for 13 seasons, including Hallowe’en Party which A Haunting in Venice is based on. While the movie’s gothic horror refreshes the novel’s traditional mystery, this former take on Christie’s novel is sinister for a different reason.

A Haunting in Venice is the third movie in Kenneth Branagh's Poirot franchise, offering a fresh horror-driven take on the iconic detective. Kenneth Branagh's Poirot movies have a grim tone that departs from Agatha Christie's original stories, stripping away the jocular demeanor and charm found in the books. The Knives Out movies, on the other hand, honor the spirit of Christie's work by incorporating campy humor and lighthearted elements. Despite the changing entertainment landscape, good storytelling remains timeless, and there is still an appetite for Christie's mysteries when adapted properly.

Hercule Poirot hit the high seas in A Haunting in Venice this past September, a supernatural horror movie from Kenneth Branagh that adapts Agatha Christie’s novel Hallowe’en Party. Now that the film has crossed $100 million at the worldwide box office, we’ve learned today that A Haunting in Venice is headed home in time for Halloween.

As the third installment in director and star Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot film series, the supernatural-themed mystery film A Haunting in Venice represents a clear flashpoint within the series, which has experienced a steady commercial decline since it debuted in 2017 with Murder on the Orient Express.
Indeed, following the disappointing box office performance of last year’s second installment, Death on the Nile, there was a palpable sense that the continued survival of the series hinged on the box office performance of A Haunting in Venice. If A Haunting in Venice didn’t at least improve on the box office performance of Death on the Nile, there didn’t seem to be a plausible rationale for making a fourth film.
Certainly, the audience and critical reaction to A Haunting in Venice, which is based on Agatha Christie’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party, has been markedly better than that of the previous two films.

A Haunting in Venice's box office has now surpassed $100 million, but the film has fallen short of the previous two entries in the franchise. The new sequel is on track to be the lowest-earner of the three Hercule Poirot movies, casting doubt on the Agatha Christie franchise's future. Despite receiving positive reviews, the shift in tone to horror may have alienated the older demographic that enjoyed the previous movies.
A new update for A Haunting in Venice's box office is here, and it could spell bad news regarding whether there will be more movies in the Hercule Poirot franchise. Director and star Kenneth Branagh returns as brilliant detective Poirot for A Haunting in Venice, the third movie in the franchise following Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. The film is based on Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party, with Poirot attempting to solve multiple murders while attending a séance in Venice.
