  • Ultimately well-made series that deals with the imprisonment of German nationals unfortunate enough to have been living in Australia at the outbreak of World War 1. Embroiled in a period when politically, the Australian Labor Party was coming of age, the wine industry of South Australia was finding its feet and European unrest was the main talking point on the home front, THE ALIEN YEARS focuses principally on the interactions of one family during a time of international unrest.

Elizabeth Patterson is the headstrong daughter of a powerful political figure within the Australian Government. When she falls in love with and ultimately marries Stefan Mueller, a German national, eyebrows are raised and whispers can be heard. The pair move to the Barossa Valley in South Australia, to grow grapes and live an unpressured existence. However, the outbreak of WW1 seals their fate and gives rise to bitter hatred which sees Stefan due for incarceration.

Victoria Longley is excellent as Elizabeth, handing the role the dignity it calls for. Direction by Crombie is hands-on and the script at the level required. You could do worse!

I saw this way back in 1988 on the ABC and have been awaiting its release onto DVD this has some very important information about South Australia that I want my kids to learn about, that they have not learned about in School. I was shocked to have learned that the Australian government's of the day and the state government treated people who had legally arrived in Australia to start a new life that they were treated so badly. The story of the 2 sons both born in Australia yet raised in separate lifestyles. One son who at his wits end went to fight for the Germans. The Mother who would refuse to allow her daughter to raise her first born son. and the incarceration of a man just because he was German. This mirrors what happened to my Grand Uncle during WW2 here in Australia he spent 5 years trying to prove he was born and bred in South Australia, he was labeled a liar and even declared INSANE all cos of his German Surname, despite relatives who were fighting for Australia against the Germans. THIS MUST BE PUT ON DVD If you can locate it on DVD
