Signs that Warner Bros DC Studios is very serious about its standalone Clayface movie even though it doesn’t have a director or star yet: The studio is given the movie written by Mike Flanagan a Sept. 11, 2026 theatrical release. That’s the famed post Labor Day gold mine weekend for Warner Bros with such movies as the It, The Nun and Beetlejuice franchises.

Producing is DC co-bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran as well as The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. EP is Chantal Nong. Doctor Sleep filmmaker Flanagan is reportedly conceiving Clayface as a horror-thriller-tragedy. He won’t be painted as a villain which has been his reputation, notoriously a villain to Batman.

Clayface got his DC introduction as part of Detective Comics #40 in June of 1940. The original Clayface was a moderately successful actor who adopted the identity of a character he’d portrayed in a horror pic after turning to crime.

The nominees for the 2025 Costume Designers Guild Awards have been revealed.

In the contemporary film category, the nominees are Challengers, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, The Fall Guy and The Substance.

In the period film category nominees are The Book of Clarence, Gladiator II, Maria, Nosferatu and Saturday Night.

And in the sci-fi/fantasy film categories, the nominees are Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Borderlands, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Wicked.

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 27th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Wicked,” “Gladiator 2,” “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part Two” among the titles landing nominations.

“Wicked’s” Paul Tazewell is nominated in the excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film category. This is his fifth guild nomination. He won in 2021 for “Hamilton” in the excellence in variety, reality-competition or live television category. Tazewell has emerged as a frontrunner for the costuming Oscar. If he does so, he will make history as the first Black man to win that category.

For “Wicked,” Tazewell anchored Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda in opposing looks.

Right behind with two nominations are “Gladiator II,” “Wicked,” and “Deadpool and Wolverine,” while other Oscar hopefuls like “Emilia Pérez,” and “A Different Man” scored a single bid. Notably missing from the nominations are “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part Two.”

Last season, “Maestro” and “Saltburn” each took home two awards from the guild. While “Saltburn” was snubbed by the Oscars, “Maestro” was nominated but lost to “Poor Things.”

On the TV side, “Dancing with the Stars” led the way with five nominations.

Winners will be announced on Feb. 15. As previously announced, makeup artist Todd McIntosh and hair stylist Peter Tothpal will receive lifetime achievement awards.

Coralie’s Fargeat’s “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Deliverance” led the 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.

The body horror of Fargeat’s “The Substance” resonated with the make-up and hair stylist guild with three nominations. Special effects artist Pierre Olivier Persin explained that Fargeat wanted to use practical effects, instead of digital CGI, where possible. 70-80% of what was seen in the film was practical, including the MonstroElisaSue creation which features at the end.

“Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” each landed two nominations a piece. Other films that scored include “Shirley,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Last Showgirl.”

Missing from the nominations were nods for “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part II.”

In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations across the hair and make-up categories.

Moana 2 is unstoppable at the worldwide box office. With its second weekend collections, it has already beaten Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s global haul. It is also awfully close to hitting a huge milestone globally. It has been making news since its release by breaking almost every record set by Frozen II. Scroll below for the deets.

For the uninitiated, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released in March and is the fifth film in the MonsterVerse franchise. It featured Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen in crucial roles. The film’s production budget was between $135 and $150 million, and it is one of the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year. It collected $196.35 million at the domestic box office and $571.75 million worldwide.

The internationalisation of U.S. awards continues apace with a bumper crop of nominations for Cannes and Venice at the Golden Globes.

My colleague Pete Hammond pointed out yesterday that Cannes must be happy with 20 nominations for films that premiered at the festival, including Emilia Perez, All We Imagine As Light and The Substance.

Cannes has confirmed to me this morning that it’s even better than that and it’s a whopping 28 nominations in total for films that launched on the Riviera. That’s a record. Recent record, at least. It’s a significant hike on previous nominations and points to a firm trend in growing appreciation for international movies at the big U.S. awards.

Cannes scored 20 nominations in 2024, nine in 2023, five for 2022, only one in 2021 and twelve for 2020.

The nominations for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards are out, and they are interesting if you're into that kind of thing. On the film side of things, Netflix and A24 were the big winners with 13 and 12 nominations respectively. Netflix also clinched the most TV nominations with 23, well ahead of second best finisher HBO/Max, which had nine total nominations.

The musical crime comedy Emilia Pérez got the most nominations of any movie with 10, ahead of The Brutalist with seven and Conclave with six. The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films has just announced the nominations for the 52nd Annual Saturn Awards, which honor the best in sci-fi and fantasy on TV. All the usual suspects are here: Dune: Part Two walked away with the most nominations at 14, including for Best Science Fiction Film. Denis Villeneuve got a nomination for directing. Stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler and Rebecca Ferguson all received acting nods. The nominations must flow.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice nabbed 13 nominations. Like, Dune: Part Two, that movie was produced by Warner Bros. Discovery, which got more noms than any other studio. Will that make up for the hot flat flop that was Joker: Folie à Deux? Probably not, but it's nice.

Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine took home 10 nominations. On the TV side of things, the big winner was Amazon's Fallout show, which received five nods: Best Science Fiction Television Series,...

Tentpoles Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Deadpool & Wolverine and TV series including Fallout and Agatha All Along lead nominations for the 52nd Saturn Awards, which recognize the year’s best genre movies and series.

Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two topped the overall noms list with 14 including Best Science Fiction Film and acting noms for Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya among others, followed by studio stablemate Beetlejuice 2 with 13 noms including Best Fantasy Film; Warner Bros topped all studios with 35 noms.

Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine had 10 nominations.

On the TV side, Amazon MGM Studios’ video game adaptation Fallout was tops with five nominations: Best Science Fiction Television Series, Best Actor on Television (Walton Goggins), Best Actress on Television (Ella Purnell) and Best Guest Star on Television (Kyle MacLachlan). Amazon MGM had a leading 17 TV noms among the studios, while Disney was second with 11.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films will host the 52nd Annual Saturn Awards on Groundhog Day next year, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The awards ceremony will honor the best TV shows and movies in the genre of science fiction, horror and fantasy with its annual banquet on February 2, which will stream live via Electric Entertainment’s platform Electric Now and on The Roku Channel for the first time.

Nominees for the Saturn Awards were announced this week, with Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) grabbing the top spot for the most-nominated entertainment company with 35 nominations. Wbd-owned or produced films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” and “Wonka” were among the titles mentioned. Dune: Part Two was the most-nominated singular title with 14 potential award wins.

It took thirty-six years, but director Tim Burton finally got around to making a sequel to his 1988 hit Beetlejuice – and with that sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, having made over $450 million at the global box office, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that Warner Bros. wants another sequel. Burton has said not to expect Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice from him… but perhaps he could be persuaded. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, Burton has completely ruled out the idea of making sequels to two other films on his résumé, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Speaking with IndieWire, Burton said, “There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to. I didn’t want to make a sequel to (Edward Scissorhands) because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for The Nightmare Before Christmas because it also felt like a one-off thing.

In addition to four festive new Christmas films that landed on Netflix last month, several new films, including many that originally debuted in theaters, will be available to stream in December 2024.

There’s a great scene in 1993’s classic time-loop comedy Groundhog Day, where Bill Murray’s character experiences a near-perfect day with Andie MacDowell’s Rita, but messes up right at the end, missing his chance to kiss her. On his next loop, he tries to recreate their perfect day for a second chance and fails miserably because all his efforts feel forced and desperate. That’s pretty much what it feels like to watch Tim Burton’s long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, which tries extremely hard to remind you why you loved the original 1988 movie, but ends up feeling like an incoherent mess, frantically shouting, “Remember this bit? Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has reportedly ended its domestic box office run after over 80 days. The film emerged as one of Tim Burton’s highest-grossing films despite being a sequel to a film released 36 years before. It had its share of struggles; WB was reluctant to make it a theatrical release. Tim Burton is confident that there will be a place for Johnny Depp in a future film of his, telling IndieWire, “Well, I’m sure there will be [another collaboration].” But Burton was careful to note that his reason for not working with an actor is never personal. “I never feel like, oh, I’m going to use this and that actor. It usually has to be based on the project I’m working on.

Tim Burton may have reawakened the Ghost With the Most in the recently released sequel to his 1988 comedy-horror film “Beetlejuice,” but that didn’t seem to convince the filmmaker to revisit some of his other classics.

During a Q&a at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday (via IndieWire), Burton dismissed the possibility of developing a sequel to 1990’s “Edward Scissorhands,” which starred Johnny Depp as the titular role.

“There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to,” Burton said. “I didn’t want to make a sequel to that because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ because it also felt like a one-off thing. Certain things are best left on their own, and that, for me, is one of them.”

Renowned filmmaker Tim Burton has shed light on Hollywood’s unpredictable nature, responding to reports regarding his involvement in a probable remake of the 1958 sci-fi classic Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman. Burton shared insights into the emotional hurdles of working in an industry where projects are frequently uncertain until production begins at the Marrakech Film Festival.
