John McClane, officer of the NYPD, tries to save his wife Holly Gennaro and several others that were taken hostage by German terrorist Hans Gruber during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles.
The building has ties to the nighttime plaza scene from 1973's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Century City, Los Angeles, had previously been part of the 20th Century Fox backlot, and to the University of California, Irvine, in Orange County. ... ...
You don't like flying, do you?
John McClane: What gives you that idea?
Businessman: You wanna know the secret to surviving air travel? After you get where you're going, take off your shoes and your socks then walk around on the rug bare foot and make fists with your toes.
John McClane: ...
When John first enters the lobby of the Nakatomi building, the Christmas tree is unlit, even though it's Christmas Eve and the company party is in progress upstairs. When Hans and the other terrorists enter the lobby just a few minutes later, the tree lights are on. In fact when John enters the building, it's dusk outside and the lights on the outside are unlit as well. But terrorists arrive when it's dark, both the Christmas tree and lights on outside trees are lit. There is more than a few minutes between two instances and they may have waited for it to become dark to turn the lights on. Besides, even in real life there are more than 8 minutes between each scene. In movie time it may be well over than that so anything might have been happened during that time.
In the widescreen version, the 20th Century Fox logo is stretched.
