In 1985, Cannon Films brought us a Chuck Norris action movie called Invasion USA, which involved Norris’s character – former CIA agent Matt Hunter – trying to stop an invasion of the United States that’s being carried out (in December) by a team of Soviet and Cuban guerrillas headed up by a villain played by Richard Lynch. It’s a violent, explosive shoot ’em up that makes for good Christmastime viewing alongside classics like Lethal Weapon, First Blood, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and Die Hard. It wasn’t a massive hit (it made $17.5 million on a budget of $12 million) and didn’t go over well with critics – but it has its fans, and apparently even helped overthrow the Communist government of Romania!
Directed by Joseph Zito from a screenplay that Chuck Norris and his brother Aaron crafted with James Bruner, Invasion USA has the following synopsis: Retired CIA agent Matt...

It would be difficult to follow in the footsteps of 1988's Die Hard, aka one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time, but Die Hard 2 is a worthy follow-up. It isn't exactly reinventing the wheel, as it were, but it has the same high-stakes, non-stop action, and the added benefit of seeing Bruce Willis' John McClane interact with others (read "telling others they're stupid for not listening to him in the first place"). Like in the first movie, there are lots of deaths, but one scene had Fox executives squirming in their seats... and it isn't the one you're probably thinking of.

Daisy Ridley, known best as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, has had a pretty fascinating career outside of a galaxy far, far away. From narrating documentaries to failed YA sci-fi adaptations, she's certainly spread her wings. Later this year, Ridley will get the chance to lead a straight-up action flick called "Cleaner." It sounds like a riff on "Die Hard" from director Martin Campbell, who directed two of the greatest "James Bond" movies ever made. We may not even have a trailer yet, but it sounds very much like the film is going to live up to the promise of the talent involved.
The actor was on hand at this year's SXSW film festival in Austin, Texas, to promote her new movie "Magpie." During a panel, Ridley got to talking about some of her more physically demanding roles as of late, including the upcoming Disney drama "Young Woman and the Sea.

In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

Warning: This list contains some images that constitute spoilers for Netflix's Damsel.
Damsel's awkward story structure, as well as the advertisement of its biggest twist, hinder its potential to be engaging and shocking. Characters such as Elodie's stepmother are underdeveloped, wasting the talents of big stars like Angela Bassett. Damsel fails to live up to Brown's other Netflix projects and is based on a premise that is seen in many movies today.
If one thing is certain, it is that Netflix's new movie Damsel starring Millie Bobby Brown is not getting the reviews it hoped for, which can be considered mixed at best. Damsel follows Elodie (Brown), a young woman in a "faraway land" who is arranged to marry the handsome Prince Henry (Nick Robinson), only for his family to sacrifice her to a vicious dragon. Brown's fairytale-trope-subversion action-adventure is receiving low reviews for a variety of reasons concerning the story itself,...

Lionsgate currently has distribution deals in place with The Roku Channel and Peacock, but will they survive the studio’s split from one company into two?
The long-promised split of the Lionsgate movie studio from the Starz cable/streaming bundle is getting underway in April. A new report from Deadline indicates that the studio will merge with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac) in April, and will begin trading on the Nasdaq under a different symbol than Starz.
The plan is for Lionsgate to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. Once the split is complete, Starz and its properties like “Outlander” and the “Power” franchise would be available for acquisition. The transactions should not have an effect on licensing deals between Lionsgate and streaming partners like Peacock and The Roku Channel. Sign Up $5.99+ / month peacocktv.com

It’s been 36 years since Die Hard hit the theatres and became a memorable action movie that still remains relatable in the entertainment industry. Providing a watershed genre moment, while building up the careers of Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, Die Hard also featured often forgotten actors like Robert Davi.

Playing the character of badass FBI Special Agent “Big” Johnson, Robert Davi offered a memorable performance despite being a lesser-known scene-stealer. But while his character initially starts by saving the day, he gradually becomes dumber and dumber in the film. This character deterioration was something that disappointed Davi’s close friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger, during the film screening.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer Looks Like a Direct Remake of the 2008 Home Invasion Horror Movie
The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

The 1997 action-thriller is basically "'Die Hard' on a plane," so you couldn't cast an unstoppable hunk like Arnold Schwarzenegger as a U.S. president forced to save the day when his personal ride is hijacked. (Not that filmgoers would have necessarily bought Arnie as a politician at the time -- we were kind of naive that way.) What you needed was someone who specialized in playing John McClane-types, ergo the sort of action star whose characters were charming and handsome yet far from invulnerable. The film's creatives had the right idea when they tried to recruit Kevin Costner, but the Oscar-winner himself had an even better idea when he passed the script on to Harrison Ford.
We don't love Ford because he's unstoppable. In fact, his characters are imminently stoppable...

A lot of really fun movies from the eighties and nineties are tough to get decent copies of. While some of the stories have happy endings, other films seem all but doomed to languish until a niche label like Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, or Unearthed Films gives them the TLC they deserve. So, what’s the title we’re worried is Gone Forever here at JoBlo? A cool little thriller (which I previously wrote up for Best Movie You Never Saw) from 1991 called Ricochet has a pretty impressive pedigree. The movie stars Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-t, Kevin Pollack and The Bionic Woman herself, Lindsay Wagner, while Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy directs it, is produced by Joel Silver, and is written by Die Hard’s Steven E De Souza. In fact, Ricochet takes place in the same universe as Die Hard, with Mary Ellen Trainor reprising her role as snoopy TV reporter Gale Wallens.

The world of Harry Potter, bursting with magic and adventure, has enchanted readers and moviegoers for years. While the eight films brought the books to life, the series had four different directors, each with their take on the story.
A still from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone
Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films, established a magical and lighthearted tone that many fans loved. He was replaced by Alfonso Cuarón for the third movie, by Mike Newell in the fourth movie, and finally, David Yates took over for the final half of the epic story. However, many fans still wonder what could have been if Columbus remained at the helm for the entire series.

While Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”
However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…

Ballerina spinoff to shake Rotten Tomatoes pattern with potential impressive ratings, changing franchise trajectory. Highly anticipated Ballerina film's critical reception to determine the future of the John Wick spinoff series. Director Len Wiseman hoping for redemption of Rotten Tomatoes reputation, banking on Ballerina success.
The John Wick franchise is expanding with its first spinoff movie, and Ballerina is already guaranteed to break a Rotten Tomatoes streak, no matter what the final score is. After four movies centered around Keanu Reeves' assassin, the action franchise is shifting focus to a new character played by Ana de Armas. She stars in Ballerina as a woman who was trained by the ballerina assassin school introduced in John Wick: Chapter 2. Expectations are understandably high for the next iteration of the John Wick franchise to maintain the same level of quality and action audiences have come to expect.

One actor, one location — and one monolith. Any questions? You may have a few by the end of Aussie actress Lily Sullivan's new film, but that's Ok... and perhaps that's the point. In this modern era of cinema, it's not exactly a requirement for movies to neatly tie up all their loose ends by the conclusion.
Sure, sometimes it's a necessity, but for a psychological thriller like Monolith, we're perhaps more concerned with the performance and thrills that come with it. After all, both these components are vital if you're only going to show just one performer confined to a single location, a.k.a. her character's tucked-away home far from everyone else's reach. And that's just what Australian filmmaker Matt Vesely does, to thrilling effect. It's not for everyone, particularly those who would rather thrive off a more expansive effort like, say, Dune: Part Two. But we were game,...

The 1980s was a seminal period in the development of what we now define as the action movie. This was the decade that cemented the statuses of both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the muscle-bound box office behemoths eating the competition for breakfast. Having emerged off the back of critically acclaimed efforts like Rocky and The Terminator, the years that followed saw the pair hone their greased-up on-screen personas to fine effect.
It wasn’t all about the muscles though. The 1980s also ushered in the era of the everyman action star with Bruce Willis in Die Hard and Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop opting for brains over brawn and reaping the benefits in multiplexes far and wide as a result. While Hollywood basked in the glory of a new generation of leading men, in the Far East, Jackie Chan was taking action movie physicality to a whole...

Samuel L. Jackson is the highest-grossing actor of all time. The iconic actor, who made his feature film debut in 1972 independent drama Together for Days, has seen his name so far attached to 142 films, which have amassed more than $27 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
The big reason behind the eye-watering figure is Jackson’s frequent appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wherein he portrays Nick Fury. However, when fans think about the veteran actor, the first character that pops into their mind, more often than not, is Jules. A hitman, who tends to deliver sermons before killing his targets.
Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction
It won’t be far-fetched to say, Pulp Fiction is his career-defining stint. Yet, as far as Jackson’s opinion is concerned the 1994 cult classic sits below another crime thriller.

Starz hasn’t offered this deal since August of 2023, and it’s not likely to stick around for long!
This particular moment in time is a tricky one to be searching for a new streaming platform. The NFL season is over, so subscribing to a service that carries NFL games won’t bring any extra value until September. Scripted TV series are still making their way back to airwaves after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, so there are few marquee titles that will draw fans to one streamer over another.
Fortunately, Starz is offering a fantastic incentive to potential subscribers on the hunt for a new favorite show: 70% off your subscription for three months! That will drop the price of a Starz subscription to $2.99 per month, and you’ll stay at that price for the next 90 days.

I still vividly remember the Oscar campaign for Amélie with its whimsical tone and saturated colors. It was several years until I watched the film myself, but I was absolutely blown away when I did. Amélie provides an almost fantastical look at romance in a way I’d never experienced. Audrey Tatou is a revelation and absolutely mesmerizing in every shot. So I was pleased to be able to talk to Amélie’s director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, about the film’s re-release. Amélie has some strange rights issues for those unaware, which means the film has no worldwide distributor. But thankfully, Sony Pictures Classics has come along and given us a re-release of the film. However, don’t get your hopes up for a 4K release, as the director views them as nothing more than a gimmick. So when you see that eventual Blu-Ray release, don’t hold out hope for a 4K behind it.

"Air Force One" is my favorite "Die Hard" knock-off. Directed by the late Wolfgang Petersen and released in 1997 (when the Cold War was newly over and America was an unrivaled superpower), the film features terrorists hijacking — what else — Air Force One. President James Marshall (Harrison Ford), a Vietnam War veteran, personally defeats them.
Making the President of the United States into John McClane, the quintessential "in the wrong place" everyman? That's some ridiculous high-concept moviemaking I can get on board with.
Now as for the villains, Gary Oldman does his best Hans Gruber as Egor Korshunov. We know what he wants: a restored Soviet Union. When he's called about his demands, he waxes poetic about seeing "The capitalists dragged from the Kremlin," and he throws in Marshall's face about how America has "given [Russia] to gangsters and prostitutes."

Action movies with impactful storytelling and artfully planned fight sequences have the most impact. Seven Samurai, Goldfinger, and Enter the Dragon are influential action movies that revolutionized the genre. The 1990s were a pivotal decade in film history that saw the success of both artistically-minded award-season films and critically acclaimed blockbuster cinema. While there was a surprising number of ambitious, auteur-driven projects spearheaded by major cinema, action cinema saw a rebirth in the aftermath of Die Hard’s release in 1988. Few films embody this unique era in cinematic history quite like The Fugitive, one of the rare films that can be characterized as both a mainstream blockbuster success and a prestigious, high-minded project. Although it is now remembered as one of the best films of 1993, The Fugitive’s production was a haphazard mess that was nearly derailed by behind-the-scenes chaos.

Family Matters started off with underwhelming ratings, but gained success due to the introduction of the character Steve Urkel, who became the breakout star and took over the focus of the show. Steve Urkel's catchphrase, "Did I do that?", became widely known and helped make Family Matters a memorable part of 1990s TV. After a decline in ratings and network changes, Family Matters continued to find audiences through syndication and streaming platforms like Hulu and Max, remaining popular nearly 35 years after its debut.
Family Matters was one of ABC's most iconic family sitcoms of the 1990s, airing alongside Full House and Perfect Strangers as part of the network's legendary 'Tgif' lineup. Unfortunately, Family Matters rapidly declined in popularity following its fifth season. Many great 80s action movies, like Cobra and Blue Thunder, never received the sequels they deserved despite initial success and popularity. The success of franchises like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon led other movies to attempt to capture the same magic, but not all were successful in securing follow-ups. Surprisingly, movies like Red Dawn and Tango & Cash, which had provocative world-building and solid box office performances, never got the sequels that fans hoped for, leaving untapped potential.
The 1980s produced some of the most iconic action movies of all time, but only a lucky few spawned the franchises that are still associated with this era. When Matthew Vaughn’s all-star comedy spy thriller “Argylle” was first announced back in July 2021, before Apple TV+ swooped in to buy the rights for $200 million, it was stated that the movie would be the first of at least three films in a major new franchise.
Two-and-half years on and “Argylle” — starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa and Samuel L. Jackson — is premiering worldwide on Friday. But despite the deep pockets of Apple, two of its leading men claim they haven’t — yet — signed up for more.

However, both Rockwell and Cavill asserted that, were further “Argylle” features given the go ahead, they’d definitely be interested.

Netflix has turned the lights off on Obliterated, putting an end to the series after a single season.
Per Deadline, it's been revealed that Obliterated has been canceled at Netflix. The series drew high viewership, peaking at No. 2 on Netflix's viewing chart for English-language shows and spending six weeks in the Top 10. That makes the news of the show getting axed a bit of a surprise, though the film's mixed reviews may have had Netflix leery about moving forward with another season, as the show has a 45% score at Rotten Tomatoes.

Obliterated has lived up to its name. Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of the hourlong action-comedy series.
The cancellation comes as a little bit of a surprise as Obliterated spent a respectable six weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series following its Nov. 30 release, peaking at No.1 in Week 2. The streamer largely bases its renewal decisions on analyzing viewing vs. cost.
From Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, Obliterated tells the story of an elite Special Forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovered that a bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now-intoxicated team had to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb and save the world.
Nick Zano, Shelley Hennig, Terrence Terrell, Alyson Gorske, C. Thomas Howell, Eugene Kim,...
The cancellation comes as a little bit of a surprise as Obliterated spent a respectable six weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series following its Nov. 30 release, peaking at No.1 in Week 2. The streamer largely bases its renewal decisions on analyzing viewing vs. cost.

Demi Moore has given an update on ex-husband Bruce Willis‘s dementia battle, and how family members are coping. Willis, 68, ended his acting career in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia. By February, 2023, the Die Hard and The Sixth Sense actor’s family revealed that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. “I think the most important thing I could share is just to meet them where they’re at,” Moore, 61, told Andy Cohan, 55, on his SiriusXM show Radio Andy on January 30. “When you let go of who they’ve been or who you think, or even who you would like them to be, you can then really stay in the present and take in the joy and the love that is present and there for all that they are — not all that they’re not.” Cohen praised Moore’s “beautiful” response. The movie hero costumes discussed in this article, such as Indiana Jones' rugged leather jacket and fedora, have become timeless symbols of their respective characters. The iconic outfits of Marty McFly from Back to the Future and Princess Leia from Star Wars resonate with audiences due to their relatable and stylish designs. Characters like John McClane from Die Hard and Neo from The Matrix have become pop culture icons in part because of their distinctive costumes, which perfectly complement their roles and the themes of their respective films.

As Hollywood neared the midpoint of the 1980s, the industry had abandoned the risk-taking ethos of the 1970s and unabashedly embraced formula filmmaking. Stars still mattered, but the pitch was king. Studio executives keen on becoming their generation's Jack Warner, Daryl Zanuck and Louis B. Mayer were through humoring unpredictable auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby. They wanted can't-miss high-concept projects powered by high-wattage stars that could play for months on end in theaters because, despite the skyrocketing value of home video and pay cable channels, theatrical was still king.
"Beverly Hills Cop" traversed a rocky path from inception to production, but producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly developed and re-developed the project until they paired a 23-year-old comedy superstar with a once-hot director who'd two years prior gotten himself fired off "WarGames." The particulars of the fish-out-of-water plot shifted many times over the years (it was nearly...

There was no shortage of action movies released during the 1980s, with some of the best and most popular of all time within the genre - including the likes of Die Hard, The Terminator, Aliens, and Predator - coming out during this decade. Whether it's fair or not, the '80s tends to be looked back on as a time of excess and over-the-top entertainment. Such things pair well with the action genre, as those who watch such films want to see explosions, big action scenes, and various other exciting things.
