Though most air raids over Kobe were simply to lay mines in the ocean, a few devastating raids struck the city directly. The first on February 4th, 1945 was relatively minor, but on March 16th and 17th, 1945, a total of 331 bombers of the XXI Bomber Command, namely the 73rd, 313th, and 314th bombardment wings, hit the northwest corner of the city, the area south of the main railroad line, the area northwest of the main railroad station, and the area northeast of the third target. In the firestorm that ensued, 21% of the urban areas of the city were destroyed (650,000 homes, factories, and other buildings) and 8,841 people died including 2 American airmen executed by firing squad after being shot down. Over the next 3 months, Kobe would be attacked 6 more times, but all were either mine laying operations or attacks on airfields and factories.
September 21, 1945... that was the night I died.
Right at the beginning, someone places what looks like a rice ball loosely wrapped in some tree bark as a protective cover next to the boy known as Seita. The scene cuts to Seita's face and soon after he collapses, the wrapped rice ball is nowhere to be seen.
